I should have posted this puzzle before I left for Myrtle Beach -- this would have been more relevant -- but better late than never, I guess. This is the latest in my "Reviving Old Puzzle Types" series, and this time, it's a headline. What is the headline of a magazine discussing the NFL draft? |

Nice to hear from you (: Does the headline contain a pun? Some other kind of wordplay? Is it funny? clever? stupid? |

Does it concern a specific team? If so, [LTPF List of NFL Teams]? Does it make a pun of their nickname? Of the name of a player they drafted? If so, [LTPF List of Players selected in NFL Draft]? I'm assuming it was the 2011 NFL Draft? Could it have happened in the 2010 NFL Draft given what happened that year? Does it concern a specific team's specific pick? If so, could the headline have happened in 2010 if that team had taken that player that year? If not, is it because of the impending lockout? Is the lockout at all relevant? Are the Patriots relevant? |

Nice to hear from you (: Thanks; glad to be able to pop in =) Does the headline contain a pun? Yes Some other kind of wordplay? Is it funny? I thought so clever? Certainly stupid? No Does it concern a specific team? Yes If so, [LTPF List of NFL Teams] See last question Does it make a pun of their nickname? No Of the name of a player they drafted? Yes If so, [LTPF List of Players selected in NFL Draft]? You've got the team, so I'm not allowing this list I'm assuming it was the 2011 NFL Draft? Yes Could it have happened in the 2010 NFL Draft given what happened that year? No Does it concern a specific team's specific pick? Yes If so, could the headline have happened in 2010 if that team had taken that player that year? Yes, assuming I understand the question right If not, is it because of the impending lockout? Is the lockout at all relevant? No Are the Patriots relevant? Yes |

If another team had taken the player in question, could the pun still have been made? If so, would it have worked for any team? Or only some? The Jets? Bills? Dolphins? Giants? Would the pun have worked if the player in question had been selected in the NBA Draft? MLB Draft? NHL Draft? MLS SuperDraft? An expansion draft (as opposed to an amateur draft)? Hmm, looking over the Pats picks, I see Nate Solder has a name similar to soldier, Ryan Mallett's last name is an incorrect spelling of the word mallet, Marcus Cannon's last name is also a word, and there doesn't appear to be any other draft picks whose names have similarity to a word. So is it any of those three? If so, do you mind telling us which one? Did the pun relate the last name to the word? |

Now I'm imagining a future headline, several years down the road... "Patriots Fire Cannon" =) So is the pun a play on Solder/soldier? |

Pity he wasn't drafted by the Bills then it could have been "Buffalo Solder". Given that soldiers also get drafted is it a play on that e.g "Solder doesn't dodge the draft" Is the fact that he was a first round draft pick relevant? the fact that he's an offensive lineman? Hope your retreat is going well. You're missed round here |

Pity he wasn't drafted by the Bills then it could have been "Buffalo Solder". Um, about that... **********SPOILER********** The New England Patriots drafted offensive tackle Nate Solder in the first round of the NFL draft this past year; the next issue of Patriots Football Weekly had the headline "Buffalo Solder." The pun works because Solder went to the University of Colorado, whose teams are the Buffaloes. Nice solve, everyone. And Peter, it's apt that you actually got it, because I had never heard of "Buffalo Soldier" until your musical connections puzzle. |

LOL a throwaway pun is the solution. Nice to see a return of the funny headline type puzzle. Oh and Balin, Bob Marley should definitely be on your "get into" list. The late and great Bob has featured in a few puzzles which you'll find in the archives. Woodworm did one called "By Request" which was very good. Can't quite remember when it was though. |
