Don’t want you to be bored, Peter! Have some questions. So, to briefly RECAP: While in France (though it need not be France), You saw two 9-10 year old boys playing With a relevant, yet to be determined object. One did something that made you laugh and say "now there's a kid with potential". This potential might not be perceived as a positive thing. Good so far? Was the object a toy? Some adult object they were playing with such as a cell phone? The two children – may we call them Jacques (he who made you laugh) and Pierre (the other one)? Is it relevant who had the object? Jacques? Pierre? Did Jacques trick Pierre in some way? Get the object away from him? Did Jacques make you laugh because he did something very “grown up”? Perhaps parroted something he may have heard his parents saying but perhaps did not fully understand? Did Jacques’ action make you think he had potential in a specific profession? Future potential “with the ladies”? That he would be a party animal when he got older? Potential about his later education – perhaps college potential? |

Don’t want you to be bored, Peter! Have some questions. Thanks V and damn fine questions they are too So, to briefly RECAP: While in France (though it need not be France), You saw two 9-10 year old boys playing There were more than two playing but only two are relevant With a relevant, yet to be determined object. FA there is a very relevant object but they were not playing with it One did something that made you laugh and say "now there's a kid with potential". Yes This potential might not be perceived as a positive thing. Yes Good so far? Yep taking the above clarifications into account Was the object a toy? No Some adult object they were playing with such as a cell phone? Not such as a cell phone IT IS A CELL PHONE The two children – may we call them Jacques (he who made you laugh) and Pierre (the other one)? You can Pierre is a fine name ;) Is it relevant who had the object? Yes. They each had a phone Jacques? Pierre? Did Jacques trick Pierre in some way? That would be a reasonable way to describe it Get the object away from him? No see above Did Jacques make you laugh because he did something very “grown up”? No Perhaps parroted something he may have heard his parents saying but perhaps did not fully understand? no Did Jacques’ action make you think he had potential in a specific profession? Not really Future potential “with the ladies”? Not this That he would be a party animal when he got older? Not especially Potential about his later education – perhaps college potential? Possibly would point to his intelligence Major spoiler inducing progress from Vesica there |

Were Jacques using the phone to make a call? Play a game? Some other non-phone related usage? Is the brand of phone relevant? Such as an iPhone? Was Pierre using the phone he had? To make a call? Did Jacques threaten to call someone? Did Jacques use an app? Did Jacques intend to make Pierre: Scared? Angry? Happy? Like him? Respect him? Obey him? |

Did this happen indoors or outdoors? Was Jacques able to see Pierre when he called him? Did Pierre expect Jacques to call him? (maybe they agreed before that Jacques would call in order to give Pierre a signal of some sort) Did Pierre hear the call? Did he pick up the call? Did he expect already before picking up the call (before looking at the display?) that it's Jacques who is calling? Did Jacques want to find out something? (Pierre's ring tone? whether Pierre has Jacques' number in his list of friends?) Did Pierre have the phone in his pocket? or was the purpose of the call to find out where Pierre's phone is? .. and by the way: Jacques is using his phone to make the call? (they did not swap their phones?) |

Were Jacques and Pierre playing hide and seek? Not quite but certainly close enough to declare a **************Spoiler************** This happened while we were enjoying a nice picnic in a public park. The group of children were actually playing Forty Forty or Kick the Can. Jacques had found all of the other players but Pierre had chosen a really good hiding place in a thick bush. Jacques got tired of looking for Pierre and simply rang his phone, followed the ringtone sound, located Pierre and rushed back to the home area shouting "Quarante Quarante Je Vois Pierre". Yeah I know he cheated but you've got to admit it was a pretty good piece of thinking and shows excellent problem solving potential. How this potential might manifest itself is anyone's guess. It also cracked me up that the french kids also called (albeit in French) the game Forty Forty as we do in Ireland . I was surprised with the literal translation as I would assume this game has many names in many different countries. What do you call it. Thanks for playing and well done Sundowner. I thought it would go quicker but it took a long time for someone to ask what they were playing. Any guesses on why the puzzle is titled as it is? |

Brilliant indeed! I've never seen or played a game of Forty Forty here in the US; looking it up, it looks a lot of fun. And I have no idea how you came up with the puzzle title. Is it a generic ringtone? Or does the name of the game have anything to do with it? |

It's a fun game alright which kind of combines the best elements of Hide n Seek and Tag. We played it endlessly as children. As for the puzzle title the phrase Be Bop A Lula is sung in the song Walk of Life by Dire Straits which also contains the line "Oh Yeah the boy can play" which Jacques most certainly can. Another to add to your "must listen to" list Balin. It's on their "Brothers In Arms" album which in my humble opinion was one of the best of the 80's. |

We just called it Kick the Can. We played it a lot until I somehow managed to kick the can hard into my sister's lip (she had been caught and was sitting next to it waiting to be free). After that, Kick the Can was banned at my house. Any idea how the name "forty forty" came about? |
