That's the fact that underlies the scrund, & this is close enough for me to declare a ************* SPOILER ************** A fundamental principle of the US legal system is that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Booth was never convicted of Lincoln's murder, so it is really improper to call him Lincoln's assassin, although people generally do. But I don't!! | ||

Good puz.zle, and good point. But it doesn't work the other way round, as too many people think. For example, if Booth (Oswald) had been tried, and found "not guilty by reason of insanity" that woulld not mean he was innocent, or that the crime never took place. It just means that the killer couldn't be held culpable. Saying "alleged killer" or, worse, "alleged murder" would indicate to some literal minds that you thought no crime took place. | ||
