Since I seem not to be able to think up any new puzzles at the moment, I'll chance a rerun of one that I did some years ago. Lynne and Hannah should probably stay away - they might remember it A man lies dead on the ground. A kilometre away is a single ski. |

Did he go skiing on a single ski? For fun? For a good reason? Did something cause him to leave the other ski behind? An emergency? Is the very peripherally relevant other person(s) the train driver? If he had both skis, would he still be hit by the train? Would he be on the tracks in the first place? Did he have anything relevant with him when hit, except the one ski? Was he following the tracks? Crossing them? Was he injured before the train hit him? Or stuck somehow? Would he have lived if the train was 10 seconds late? Or one minute? Or 10? |

Was he injured by an animal? Was he chased? Did he have to remove the one ski because of his injury? Because he couldn't use that ski anymore? Leg/foot injury? Broken bone(s)? Relevant exactly how he got his first injury? Exact nature of the injury relevant? Or is it enough to know that it caused him to try skiing on one ski? Is he following the tracks? If so: because there is less snow there? Because they lead to civilization? Because he's unable to get away from them? Is he stuck at a specific point on the tracks? Was he injured before he got onto the tracks? Other relevant objects: ski poles? Backpack? Specific item of clothing? |

I think it is time we euthanise this ***************** SPOILER **************** A man was cross-country skiing across Hardangervidda. There was a lot of snow, and the railroad snowplows had been running all winter to keep the (single) track clear, and created a "canyon" through the 3-metre-plus layer of snow. The man didn't realise this, and fell into the canyon, breaking a leg in the fall. He had no chance of climbing the hard-packed snow walls with a broken leg, and he knew that any train coming along at 130 km/h would not be able to stop in time. So he takes the ski off his broken leg, jams it upright into the snow between the tracks, hoping that the train driver will understand, and start braking the train when he sees the ski. But which way to run? He has a timetable, which tells him that the first train will come from the east, so he starts going west as fast as his one ski and broken leg will allow. Unfortunately, the timetable is outdated, the first train comes from the west, and... the rest is history. |
