Lili has a virtue that was fairly common 50 years ago but is now very rare. What is it?

Is Lili's religion relevant? Is religion in general relevant?
The virtue is rare -- in America? Worldwide?

Racism relevant?

Does it have to do with being willing to buck convention?

has this virtue become rare because of something which has changed in the USA during the last 50 years? would the same thing be true for other western civilisations?

has it become rare because of an invention? because of changes to society? the way we live our lives?

So this might be described as "absence of a vice?"
Is it a serious virtue?
For example, signaling before you turn is a virtue, but not that important in the great scheme of things - a minor virtue. Anything like that?
Is traffic involved in any way?

The thing she doesn't, is it normally done: alone? At home? In public? With friends? Is it: unhealthy? Unpleasant? Smelly? Yucky? Noisy? Impolite? Drugs involved? Food? Cellphones?

I would have thought that smoking was more prevelant 50 years ago than it is now.
However - is she an active/aggressive non-smoker, even going as far as to grab cigars/cigarettes away from people? Does she insist on people not smoking in her presence, even when outdoors? Any of this relevant or even OTRT?

Should I follow the smoking thread?

Does Lili care (I mean, CARE) about animals?

Might it be relevant if I ask about her other interests such as

animals?
her household?
her relatives?
her neighbors?
her ecological environment / caring about these subjects?

Does she have dogs?
Does she hunt?
Does she use dogs to hunt?
Does she use dogs as sled dogs?

Does she chide her neighbors not to hunt? [I hope so!]

Does Lili live alone?
Does it matter whether she lives alone?
Does she figure it's okay to smoke bcz she lives alone?

Okay, she had a virtue...

Was it a virtue that was important

in Hollywood?
to her family?
bcz she wanted to find a great job?
or did it not matter to her?

Is there a story that we should figure out, here?

Great puzzle, Nimue, I'm baffled.

Should I follow the smoking thread? yes. See replies to Balin's questions, above.

Does Lili care (I mean, CARE) about animals? irrel

Might it be relevant if I ask about her other interests such as

animals? no
her household? no
her relatives? no
her neighbors? no
her ecological environment / caring about these subjects? noish

Does she have dogs? irrel
Does she hunt? irrel
Does she use dogs to hunt? irrel
Does she use dogs as sled dogs? irrel

Does she chide her neighbors not to hunt? [I hope so!]No, but I hope she doesn't take it upon herself to chide her neighbors not to hunt.I'm so squeamish that I don't even watch my own blood being drawn, so of course I don't hunt (or fish). But I am definitely not a vegetarian & I don't see why hunting is worse than eating what other people kill.

Does Lili live alone? irrel
Does it matter whether she lives alone? no
Does she figure it's okay to smoke bcz she lives alone? irrel

Okay, she had a virtue...

Was it a virtue that was important

in Hollywood? irrel
to her family? possibly
bcz she wanted to find a great job? irrel
or did it not matter to her? her job is irrel

Is there a story that we should figure out, here? yes

Great puzzle, Nimue, I'm baffled. Balin to the rescue!! See below

********** SPOILER **************
Like many people, both now & 50 years ago, Lili (who gets her name from the real Lili's cat) used to smoke but has stopped. Like many ex-smokers 50 years ago but few now, she has not turned into a self-righteous buttinsky who monitors other people's smoking. She does not proselytize. She does not nag smokers to mend their ways. She minds her own business. Truly, a hero for our time! By the way, I am a lifelong non-smoker who is mildly allergic to cigarette smoke & violently allergic to the hot air blown by anti-smoking zealots. Please don't be allergic to my new puzzle at the bottom of the page!
