A boat sinks. Two old men decide to build a new boat, but neither of them use it when it is built. When the new boat is used, many people are upset. Explain. Clue: Despite Jennifer Aniston claiming that it's "all about her", this puzzle has nothing to do with her. |

True story? Yes - true, and very fascinating, I can't believe that I just learned about it FYOI? No, I'm not creative enough to make up something like this FSEI? I believe that it's true, at least most of it would have to be true. There are some parts that people claim are possibly imagined. "The Old Man and the Sea" relevant? No Is the boat a toy boat? rowboat? Bigger? Both boats are bigger Could it more accurately be described as a ship? They both could, yes The Titanic? No Is the new boat perhaps the Titanic? (That would certainly cause a lot of upset...) No Did this happen during the...20th (century)? Yes |

The two men: relevant that they are old? Do they build the new boat? If so, do they build it together? Do they build it with their hands or hire someone to build it for them? Help them build it? Are they still alive when the boat is ready? Neither of them uses it because they are dead? Relevant how time passes before the boat is used? "Used" by the two old men: sail with it? Or some other use? Later use: sailing? put on display? sell it? some other use? Many people: 100+? 1000+? 100.000+? More? Is the new boat built as a replica of the old one? |

Were the nukes usable (after being retrieved)? Not likely, not relevant. There were other things, though, that were 'usable', and this is what caused the many people to be upset |

Did this happen during or after the Cold War? Were people upset about possible re-escalation of conflict? About spying using these codes? |

Did this happen during or after the Cold War? During Were people upset about possible re-escalation of conflict? Yes, and...About spying using these codes? ...yes! We're mostly done...all that's really left is to determine who the two old men are and the significance of the 'C' in the puzzle title |

The old men are Soviet, right? (It's been so long that I can't remember.) No, the old men are two Americans, one of which is the US president (I think this was discovered a while ago) Are they government? One is, one isn't Did they build the ship? One was responsible for building it although he did not actively participate in construction The submarine? No, the sub was Russian built Form the codes? No, these were also formed by Russians Really all that's left is to determine who the two old men were |

Is one of them a codebreaker? No - the president obviously has the security of the US in mind so he approves construction of a ship that can salvage the Russian sub and hopefully recover information and/or weapons. The other man has the means of building a salvage vessel and simply needs the approval and money from the US government to do so. |

** SPOILER ** This one has stalled and most of the info has been discovered, so it remains only to fill in a few blanks: In the early 1970's the CIA (or 'C' as in the puzzle's title) launched a project that was (erroneously) called 'Project Jennifer.' A Russian sub sank near Hawaii, and the US government, with knowledge of President Nixon, contracted with one of Howard Hughes' companies to build a salvage vessel. Under the guise of searching the ocean floor for minerals and valuable ore deposits, the ship recovered some weapons and encoding equipment from the sub. The Russians sent several "observation" ships to monitor US activity since they did not want any part(s) of the sub recovered by the US and they had no ships capable of searching for the sub. According to the CIA there was nothing of value recovered from the sub, yet there are reports that torpedoes and encryption equipment were recovered. This all happened less than a year before I was born, and I just learned of it and made this puzzle after reading an article describing the project. Nice work by all those involved! |
