Did the two things happen simultaneously (the home runs and the life-saving)? Was the man who hit the home runs a baseball player? Were the 2 home runs hit during the course of 1 baseball game? Over a period of time? |

Ok, can we call Man #1 Joshua, and Man #2 Matt? If so, did Joshua save Matt's life after HR #1 but before HR #2? After both of them? Before both of them? Was Joshua playing baseball, even though he wasn't a (professional) baseball player? Was Matt playing baseball? Was Matt watching baseball? Hit by a baseball? Are there any, um, euphemisms present in this puzzle? Or is it strictly PG-rated? (there is a death in it, anyway) |

Was Joshua himself the murderer? No If either man had not been playing professionally (say they were on a company team) would Matt's life still have been saved? The circumstances would have been entirely different; the puzzle would not work if it had not been professional baseball. Is the motive for the murder relevant? Yes. In fact there's a better word than "murder." |

Was the period of time separating the two home runs... several weeks? within a single season? a year or two? more? Relevant whether there were other players on base for the specific home runs involved? Were the home runs actually during games -- or during exhibitions, batting practice, etc.? Something to do with running the basepaths relevant? The celebration at the plate? Were the games televised? Radio broadcast? Anything to do with being promoted/demoted to the majors relevant? I take it the man hitting the home runs did not KNOW he was saving anyone's life, nor did he intend to...? Was the prospective victim's life half-saved after the first home run? (I don't know what that question means, but maybe the answer will help :-) |

Others are involved, but not as much in the "baseball" bit Others as well? See prev Was the period of time separating the two home runs... several weeks? within a single season? a year or two? more? Only a day or two (relevant), so obviously the same season (relevant) Relevant whether there were other players on base for the specific home runs involved? No Were the home runs actually during games Yes -- or during exhibitions, batting practice, etc.? Something to do with running the basepaths relevant? The celebration at the plate? Neither Were the games televised? Radio broadcast? Irrel to both Anything to do with being promoted/demoted to the majors relevant? No I take it the man hitting the home runs did not KNOW he was saving anyone's life, nor did he intend to...? Correct, and important Was the prospective victim's life half-saved after the first home run? No, both HRs were needed (HR = home run for all you non-baseball-followers (I don't know what that question means, but maybe the answer will help :-) |

Ahhh...would Joshua have been on one of the planes if not for the home runs that extended the series? |

Ahhh...would Joshua I think you mean "Matt" have been on one of the planes if not for the home runs that extended the series? Yep. **********SPOILER********** "Joshua" is Michael Cuddyer, Twins right fielder. "Matt" is Brad Thomas, Tigers pitcher. In 2001, they were teammates on the New Britain Rock Cats (the Twins' AA minor league affiliate), and were in the first round of the playoffs. Cuddyer hit two key home runs that helped the Rock Cats win the series and move on to the final round of the playoffs. In Cuddyer's words: "We knew that we were in the playoffs, but had we lost in the first round, the season would have been over Sept. 9. Brad had booked his flight for Sept. 11. He was not the only one who booked a flight that day, but he was the only one who was booked on the flight that took a detour off of its route from Boston to LA, right into the World Trade Center." The puzzle title is the first line of a poem about 9/11 that I found online. Nice work everyone, especially Tardigradeparty for a key leap, Kaylee for the connection, and Ixoye for putting it all together. Here are the links: the general article and the one in Cuddyer's words. May we never forget. |

Where were you when the world stopped turning On that September day? (No link to the song, but I'm sure Balin will provide if he wishes. I was asleep when the attacks happened, as I'm 3 hours earlier than the East Coast, but I was in school when I found out, just before lunch, in my U.S. History class. It was my aunt's 41st birthday. Despite declaring she never wanted another birthday, she turned 51 this year...) What a lucky escape for "Matt"!! Thanks to Matt (Balin, not "Matt") for posting the puzzle!! |

Where were you when the world stopped turning On that September day? a) I'm not sure what song you're referring to, but... b) I was in school. They called an assembly to tell us what had happened. Everything about that day other than the assembly is a blur, but we didn't get to leave early, I remember that. Link to the poem (it's the first one): http://www.9-11heroes.us/911-memorial-poems-c.php |

Very good puzzle, good statement and nice idea. We all remember where we were on that day, and it's interesting to read about people who, like Brad, avoided being in danger due to circumstances that kept them from being on those planes. |

The song is called "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?" and is a song about 9/11. kaylee kitteh happenz to be country song fan. Our local country station, KRTY, played the song *a lot* that September, following the attacks, along with songs like "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue", and "Have You Forgotten?" (which came out some months later, when people were beginning to criticize the war in Afghanistan). |

I was in school, too. I was in a typing class when they told us. But they didn't tell us much. |
