Since I haven't got any other puzzles to run right now, here's a variant on the rulebreaker: Every one of your questions will be answered with a chess move in algebraic notation; your goal is to get the white queen to deliver checkmate with a capture on g7. Please don't ask the alphabet.

The clocks have started...go!

I'm having a hard time seeing how you will manage this. Do you have some number of preordained moves in mind?

Will black have gone first?

I'm having a hard time seeing how you will manage this. Do you have some number of preordained moves in mind? No; the moves will not make up an actual chess game. You just need to produce "Qxg7#".

Will black have gone first? No; see previous answer

why are there dots on those ones? Rxg7+

why are there dots on those ones? The ellipsis before the move means that it is Black who has moved.

HINT:

The rule incorporates several different "mini-rules" to determine the different aspects of the move:

-What piece moves?
-What rank (row; the number)?
-What file (column; the letter)?
-Is it White or Black's move?
-Is it a capture?
-Is it check? Is it checkmate?

HINT: Only a small bit of specialized chess knowledge is needed to solve the puzzle. It is relevant for the parts of the rule that determine the piece and check/checkmate. It can be found on Wikipedia (it actually has its own article) so I will allow the use of Googlepedia for this.

Are there bloopers in these last answers? The files seem to be wrong in the response to some of the soccer questions.
Can an identical statement/question receive a different response on different occasions?
Can a piece other than R or Q give + or #?
Can a pawn move be an answer to a statement?

RECAPPING with HINTS on the mini-rules:

-What piece moves?
-Is it a capture?
-Is it check? Is it checkmate? These all involve the words in a question
-What rank (row; the number)? Also involves the words
-What file (column; the letter)? HAS BEEN DETERMINED: Numerical value of first letter in sentence, looping around after H.
-Is it White or Black's move? Involves one letter

Remember, your goal is to get the answer to be Qxg7#.

Is it if it ends with an "e" it receives the ellipses? Close. And Kaylee was close on the rank, so I'll give those to you:

The rank is determined by counting the number of words from the shortest word to the end of the question.

Whose turn it is (the ellipses) is simple: if the last letter in the question is a consonant, it is White's move. If it's a vowel, then it's Black's.

All you need now is the piece, check, and checkmate. And I posted this earlier: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_piece_relative_value is relevant

For the benefit of Kaylee and other confuseded kittehz, here's how Balin's rulebreaker works:

We already know the rules for the move's rank and the file, and whether black or white moves.
The rest of the rules depend on the relative values of the chess pieces, given by: Queen=9, Rook=5, Knight=3, Bishop=3 and Pawn=1.

Firstly you count the number of letters in each word of the question. Then you next consider only the words of length 9,5,3 and 1.
If the longest of such words is length 9, then the piece moving is a queen.
If the longest of such words is length 5, then the piece moving is a rook.
If the longest of such words is length 3, then the piece moving is either a knight or bishop (used alternately). If the longest of such words is length 1, then the piece moving is a pawn.

If such a word contains the relevant initial of the chosen piece (such as my examples of quadratic and equations in the final solution), then the move is a capture.

If such a word is also the longest word in the question, then the move is check +.

If all of the words in the question are of length 9,5,3 or 1, then the move is checkmate #.

Finally if none of the words are of length 9,5,3 or 1 then the piece moving is a king, and no captures, checks or checkmate could occur.

A really good rulebreaker.
