There are now 2 types of experimental connections puzzles in existence: the one Peter365 came up with ("Experimental Connections Puzzle") and the one I did ("Experimental Film: A strange sort of connections puzzle"); both need clever names. Since I can't think of any, I'll just say that this puzzle is the former. Post lyrics to songs from musicals and state what musical it is from. If the musical has the three criteria I'm thinking of, I will respond with another lyric (from the same musical, but not necessarily the same song); if not, I will say No and try to make some sort of pun while doing so. I'll also state how many of the criteria it did hit. Curtains up -- go! |

Do you hear the people sing? Singing the song of angry men? It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again. Les Misérables Macavity's a mystery cat, he's called the Hidden Paw For he's a master criminal who can defy the law. He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair For when they reach the scene of crime, Macavity's not there! Cats Hakuna Matata What a wonderful phrase Hakuna Matata Ain't no passing craze It means no worries for the rest of your days It's our problem-free philosophy The Lion King |

Do you hear the people sing? Singing the song of angry men? It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again. Les Misérables There is a room that's full of toys, There are a hundred boys and girls, Nobody shouts or talks too loud, Not in my castle on a cloud. Macavity's a mystery cat, he's called the Hidden Paw For he's a master criminal who can defy the law. He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair For when they reach the scene of crime, Macavity's not there! Cats Bustopher Jones is not skin and bones In fact, he's remarkably fat He doesn't haunt pubs - he has eight or nine clubs For he's the St. James's Street Cat! Hakuna Matata What a wonderful phrase Hakuna Matata Ain't no passing craze It means no worries for the rest of your days It's our problem-free philosophy The Lion King This one may not worry but it's a No. It does fit 2 out of 3 though Ol' man river, dat ol' man river He must know sumptin', but don't say nuthin' He dast keeps rollin', he keeps on rollin' along He don't plant 'taters, he don't plant cotton But dem dat plants dem, is soon forgotten But ol' man river, he keeps on rollin' along Showboat It can stop rolling: No, but another 2-fer. A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down, The medicine go down, the medicine go down. Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down In the most delightful way. Mary Poppins If you say it loud enough you'll always sound precocious, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious When I was a lad I served a term As office boy to an Attorney's firm. I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor, And I polished up the handle of the big front door. I polished up that handle so carefullee That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee! H.M.S. But Britain won her proudest bays In good Queen Bess's glorious days! Yes, Britain won her proudest bays In good Queen Bess's glorious days! Pirates of Penzance -I think I go back to San Juan. -I know a boat you can get on! (Bye-bye!) -Everyone there will give big cheer! -Everyone there will have moved here... West Side Story Maria I've just met a girl named Maria And suddenly that name Will never be the same To me But I'll be true to the song I sing, And live and die a Pirate King! (It is! Hurrah for the Pirate King, hurrah for the Pirate King!) Pirates of Penzance A two-fer that misses #3. From now on if a musical only has some criteria I will say which ones. Is it possible for a musical to meet only one criterion? None at all? It is, but I underestimated just how many would actually fit the criteria, specifically #1 and #2. Not sure how that will help you, if at all. |

Guys and Dolls And the devil will drag you under By the sharp lapel of your checkered coat Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, Sit down you're rockin' the boat Don't cry for me Argentina The truth is I never left you All through my wild days My mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance Evita We've all gone crazy Mourning all day and mourning all night Falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya, Tomorrow! You're always a day A-way! Annie No one care for you a smidge When you're in an orphanage It's a hard-knock life It was the music Of something beginning, An era exploding, A century spinning In riches and rags, And in rhythm and rhyme. The people called it Ragtime... Ragtime! Ragtime! Ragtime! Ragtime When he is old enough I will show him America And he will ride On the wheels of a dream One of my all-time favourites from Louis Armstrong... Hello, Dolly. Well, hello, Dolly! (It's Louis, Dolly) It's so nice to have back where you belong. You're lookin' swell, Dolly. I can tell, Dolly, You're still glowin', you're still crowin', you're still goin' strong! I feel the room swayin', and the band's playin', one of your old favorite song from way back when! So, take her wrap, fellas, Find her an empty lap, fellas! Dolly'll never go away again! Hello, Dolly! I held her for an instant But my arms felt sure and strong It only takes a moment To be loved a whole life long |

Well, that sledgehammer wasn't that effective at all. I'm certainly out of practice... Does criterion #1 have anything to do with the source of the musical? Does criterion #2? Does criterion #2 have anything to do with actors playing a role of an animal singing songs? Actors playing a role of another human being singing songs? When you said that the 1902 version of the Wizard of Oz may be missing 1 or 2 criteria, criterion #3 is obviously one of them. Is criterion #1 the potentially missing criterion? Is criterion #2? |

I can show you the world Shining, shimmering, splendid Tell me, princess, now when did You last let your heart decide? Aladdin Answering for both the 2011 musical and the 1992 Disney film: only matches #2 RECAP: Criteria #1 and 2 both are related to songs from the musical. #2 has to do with who sings the songs. #3 has been determined: The musical must have been nominated for Best Musical at the Tony Awards. |

Hmmm...need to clarify a few things... Does #1 have to do with the presence of a single word (i.e. one of the songs in the musical must contain this single word in order to qualify for #1)? Does #1 have to do with the absence of a single word (i.e. none of the songs in the musical can contain this word in order to qualify for #1)? In either case, is only one word involved? If more than one, how many? |

I also hope to explore the personality of Mr. Macgregor in his conflicting roles as farmer and humanitarian. ~You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown ...I so love the book report song :-D So do I, and this is a personal favorite musical of mine as I got to play Snoopy in it in 11th grade! Also, it matches #1 and #2, so sadly, I can't quote any lyrics right now. |

"Whistle..." does hit #2, but barely -- I think there's only one song that's completely solo. I was also in "YAGM,CB" at school... must've been right before the revival, b/c I was Patty (truly sad, 'cause I didn't get a chance to sing too much in it and I wasn't in Book Report ::cries:: ). All righty, then.... So we've figured out what criteria 2 and 3 are, so we're just trying to figure out #1 now, right? If my calculations are correct:

That's all right... the table was really more for me and the solvers :-) So criterion 1 has something to do with the presence (or lack?) of a certain word? words? found in a song title somewhere within the show? Is it a specific word? or a type (like 'a word having to do with time')? Is it found in any random song? or in a certain one (like the intro, showstopper, or finale)? Is it "I"? "love"? "am"? "the"? |

So criterion 1 has something to do with the presence This (or lack?) of a certain word? words? found in a song title somewhere within the show? Yes! The first criterion is that the musical must have a song title containing... Is it a specific word? or a type (like 'a word having to do with time')? This one, but not that example Is it found in any random song? This or in a certain one (like the intro, showstopper, or finale)? Is it "I"? "love"? "am"? "the"? No to all |

Word type: does it have to be a noun? adjective? adverb? verb? conjunction? preposition? article? number? a name (of one of the characters)? YES!!!!!!!! or could it be any of these things? **********SPOILER********** #1: There must be a song in the musical containing a character's name in the title. #2: The musical must include a solo song. #3: The musical must have been nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical. Excellent work, all, especially Haenlomal and Kalira! You all may continue to post lyrics at your leisure; in fact, it is encouraged. |
