A few days ago I did something that utterly horrified a group of elderly people who saw me. However, what I did in no way violated local cultural/ethical norms, and I can confidently guess that everyone who was so horrified had themselves done this thing many times in their life. What happened?

Would all elderly people be horrified? Would any non-elderly people be horrified? Did they misunderstand something? Did you expect them to be horrified? Were you surprised that they were horrified? Relevant where you did it? Did they see you? Hear you? Size of the group relevant? Profession? (Or in case of pensioners: former profession)? Is your profession relevant?

Would all elderly people be horrified? not necessarily, but likely in my area Would any non-elderly people be horrified? let's say 60+ probably would be, any younger probably not Did they misunderstand something? yes Did you expect them to be horrified? no Were you surprised that they were horrified? no Relevant where you did it? the country this happened in is very relevant, otherwise just that it was in public Did they see you? this Hear you? Size of the group relevant? no Profession? (Or in case of pensioners: former profession) no? Is your profession relevant? not really

did you do this thing just once? I've done it before but it only had to be once indoors? outdoors? this

a public place? yes a park? no did you pick the flowers? the title is only very laterally relevant

Were they horrified because of something that happened earlier in their lifetime? Or before they were born? Would younger people not be horrified, because they were born too late to experience something? Or were too young to be affected by an event that happened during their lifetime? Current events relevant? Technology? Computers? Cellphones? Is a war relevant? Did they think you were being: rude? Disrespectful? Trespassing? Vandalizing? Destroying something? Doing something criminal?

Macau? Shanghai? neither- all that's important is that it's not one of the big eastern cities. This happened in Gansu province, if you're curious

did you remind the people of a natural disaster? i wouldn't call it that, no

were you digging? picking? this

were you wasting food? no- in some ways just the opposite leaving stuff in the ground? on the plant? yes but that wasn't the issue

Were you eating food raw? right off the plant? out of the ground? not washing it first? not offering them any? none of these- I wasn't eating it there and they didn't want what I had

It would be pretty unreasonable to make you nail down what exactly I was picking, so I'll just tell you it was purslane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portulaca_oleracea) growing in a vacant lot. Now we just need to find what the perceived issue was.

SUPER HAPPY FUN SPOILER TIME

During the Great Leap Forward in the late 1950s, disastrous food distribution policies combined with incompetence at every level of government led to a protracted famine in rural areas all over China, leaving tens of millions dead. Many people survived by eating whatever they could get their hands on without being noticed, including wild grasses and the aforementioned purslane. Anyone old enough to remember that time would have a strong aversion to these famine foods and assume anyone eating them would do so because they had no other choice.

Funny thing about purslane, though- it's absolutely delicious. I went to pick some for a stir-fry and overheard a group of elderly folks talking and fussing about me, assuming I couldn't speak Chinese. Since if I told them I just like the taste they might assume I was trying to save face, I just said I used it as chicken feed and all was well again.

(also the title refers to the slogan of the Hundred Flowers Campaign which directly preceded the Great Leap Forward)
