He didn't believe it until he proved it himself. And even then, he could hardly believe it. |

Oops! Sorry, forgot my name in the title. Am I right to assume that only a moderator can fix it once the mistake is made? |

That's right. But you just need to ask and one of the mods will get it. Are all "he"s the same? H? A? M? Are all "it"s the same? It = an object? Feeling? Theory? Statement? Proved it: scientifically? Logically? |

That's right. But you just need to ask and one of the mods will get it. All right. Thanks! Are all "he"s the same? yes H? A? M? I think he is probably a child or teenager, but it isn't really all that relevant, otherwise yes Are all "it"s the same? It = an object? Feeling? Theory? Statement? this Proved it: scientifically? I suppose it would be this one, though a pretty simple form Logically? |

Is he very young? not really relevant, assume teens Is he proving something he was taught? yes At school? this By a parent? but it could just as well have been this, without making the puzzle all that different |

Does "proved it himself" refer to a mathematical proof? no, no need for that - this could be proved in a much simpler, more practical way |

Was it like "proving" that 2+2=4 by using an abacus? Or am I entirely OTWT here? |

Was it like "proving" that 2+2=4 by using an abacus? Or am I entirely OTWT here? yope, I probably think going down that road would confuse you. A better road may be to try and work out what kind of "math" we're talking about here. |

Exponential growth relevant? The problem of placing one grain on the first square of a chessboard, 2 on the next, 4, 8 and so on, and ending up with more grains than there exist on earth? |

Exponential growth relevant? The problem of placing one grain on the first square of a chessboard, 2 on the next, 4, 8 and so on, and ending up with more grains than there exist on earth? no, and you're really all thinking far too complicated - I do like the chessboard story, though, and it could've made a good LP (: |

Permutations? Combinations? ehm, I don't think so... I think we're a bit outside of my math skills here I think i might have thrown you off track with the math thing - note that I only said that of the mentioned subjects that was the most likely one for it to be mentioned in. Put it this way: you've figured out that it has to do with statistics. That is about as much you have to know about the math side of it. (I hope this was understandable?) |

was it a particular statistic which he didn't believe? yes, well, a particular statistical phenomenon did he prove it in class? this outside? though there are plenty of contexts outside of class where he could have |

The Birthday Paradox? *Lets the trumpets sound* And just like that, the puzzle is solved! *****SPOILER***** This exact story is taken from a blog I read where some guy retold that his teacher had told them that there was a larger than 60% chance that two people in their class had the same birthday. He didn't believe it until he went around class and discovered that there were actually TWO pairs of classmates who shared the same birthday. He still couldn't quite believe it, though. For those who haven't heard of it, the birthday paradox says that with a group of 57 people, the chances of there being two people who share the same birthday is actually 99%! Docd's link contains much more information for anyone interested. Thanks for playing, and well done Docd! |

Nice puzzle! In 11th grade, I took a college statistics class with 20 people in it, and the professor discussed this paradox. Since there were 20 people, the chance of a match was just over 40%...but there was a match anyway: two people were born on December 20. |
