You wake up after what feels like a long, long sleep. You get out of bed...wait, you're not in your bed. In fact, you're not in any bed at all; you're on the floor in a room you've never seen before. And you're wearing...a swimsuit? That's certainly odd; you know you didn't wear a swimsuit to bed. Anyway, you look around. In front of you is a large metal door; to the right of that door is a large gas grill. The wall to your right contains a wooden door; the wall to your left has a window covered by a pull-down shade. The wall behind you has a smallish ventilation cover in its bottom-right corner, and a red button on its upper left. Where to start... |

were dere iz grill, dere iz cheezburgur? =) *hopeful* Try to open the wooden and metal doors. Are there any details about them that are of particular interest? Is the red button a big red button? Does it have anything written on or near it? How big is the ventilation cover? Can it be removed? Raise the shade on the window. Can you see out? If so, what's out there? |

were dere iz grill, dere iz cheezburgur? =) *hopeful* Maybe there will be! Try to open the wooden and metal doors. Are there any details about them that are of particular interest? The metal door is locked, and there is a noticeable keyhole. The wooden door opens. Is the red button a big red button? No, but it's not that small either. Does it have anything written on or near it? No How big is the ventilation cover? Less than a foot high, and just under two feet long. Can it be removed? Probably with some sort of prying tool. Raise the shade on the window. You try, but the shade won't raise. Upon closer inspection you see that the pull-ring, attached to the shade by a string, is stuck to the wall with a heavy staple. Can you see out? If so, what's out there? |

What's through the wooden door? Also, once we go through a door, can we get back into the room we left behind? |

What's through the wooden door? You step into a small room, about the size of a walk-in closet. Against the left wall is a broom, its handle covered by a towel. Along the back wall are several books behind glass, their spines visible. There is also a narrow slot below each book, and a lever on the right wall. Also, once we go through a door, can we get back into the room we left behind? Yes. This is not a massively long adventure. |

Examine the broom more closely. Is the towel tied onto the broom? Can you lift it off the broom? If so, do so. Please examine the books behind the glass. How many are there? If the titles can be read clearly, what are they? Does the back wall seem to be some kind of book-dispensing vending machine (that is, stick money-or-something in a slot, pull the lever, and the book falls out?) |

Examine the broom more closely. It looks like an ordinary broom. Is the towel tied onto the broom? No. Can you lift it off the broom? If so, do so. You take the towel, and notice now that the broom is fixed to the wall with a thin wire. Please examine the books behind the glass. How many are there? There are 10. If the titles can be read clearly, what are they? They are as follows: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens The Princess Bride by William Goldman Catch-22 by Joseph Heller Brave New World by Aldous Huxley The Lottery by Shirley Jackson Northern Lights by Philip Pullman The Godfather by Mario Puzo The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien Does the back wall seem to be some kind of book-dispensing vending machine (that is, stick money-or-something in a slot, pull the lever, and the book falls out?) You can't tell. But all the books are behind one big piece of glass, on one shelf, so not likely.} |

Try to pull the broom away from the wall. Does the wire break? Does it pull on something behind the wall? Also try pulling the lever, and see if anything happens. |

Try to pull the broom away from the wall. Does the wire break? No. Does it pull on something behind the wall? No. If you want to get the broom, you'll have to find a way to break the wire. Also try pulling the lever, and see if anything happens. Nothing happens. |

By the way, this is more of a typical "room escape" adventure than a full-fledged, epic plotline adventure. So be sure to look at, behind, under, etc. everything, and think of ways you can use what you have. Also, unlike most of my adventures, your inventory will not be empty at the end of this escape. |

Try to swat it (the button, of course) with the towel, by rolling it up to make a "stick" that you can slap things with. |

Try to swat it (the button, of course) with the towel, by rolling it up to make a "stick" that you can slap things with. You whip the towel at the button and successfully hit it. A loud grinding noise comes from the floor, and you look down. The floor to your right opens up, revealing a swimming pool. The pool reaches to a bit over two feet away from the walls on either side of you and to the middle of the floor of this room. It also touches the wall with the button on it. |

How deep is it? Is it uniformly deep, or does it have a shallow end and deep end? If it does have one end shallower than the other, what are the depths across the pool, and which end is under the button? |

How deep is it? Since you have a swimsuit and towel, you jump in and sink to the bottom. It's about 7 feet deep, and when you hit the bottom, you feel something long and metal on the pool floor. You pick it up. Is it uniformly deep, or does it have a shallow end and deep end? Feeling along the bottom, it seems uniformly deep. If it does have one end shallower than the other, what are the depths across the pool, and which end is under the button? No part of the pool is directly under the button, but the pool is about 12' x 8' rectangular (and 7' deep all around), with a 12' side up against the wall with the button. When you resurface, you open your eyes, having kept them closed underwater. You have the long metal thing with you, which you can now see is a fireplace poker. |

Can you wedge the end of the poker under the staple (holding the window shade cord) to pull it out? What about under the edge of the ventilation cover? Also, look inside the gas grill to see if there are any objects sitting down below the grill part itself. |

Can you wedge the end of the poker under the staple (holding the window shade cord) to pull it out? No; the staple is far too small. What about under the edge of the ventilation cover? You wedge the poker under the vent cover and pry it off. The vent cover, now only attached by one corner, swings open. Also, look inside the gas grill to see if there are any objects sitting down below the grill part itself. You look inside the grill...at least, you try to. The lid is rusted shut, but there's a slot in the lid that can be pushed in -- I guess if you wanted to cook food you could hold it through the slot somehow. You check out the rest of the grill. There is a propane tank attached to the grill on its left (well, your left; the side nearest the metal door), and a foldable tray just above the tank. On the tray there is some writing: Lighting instructions: -Open gas valve -Light grill through matchlight hole in front of grill -To turn off grill, turn off gas completely You check. Yep, there's a matchlight hole in the front of the grill. Apparently, you have to stick a match or something like that through the hole to light the grill. Below the propane tank is a paper clip, and you add that to your inventory. |

plz tu check around sidez of pool foar anythin interestin. Underwater and anyplace above water we haz nawt checked yet. Also plz tu check vent cover - iz anythin stand out about it? You swim under the wall and emerge on the other side...in yet another room. You look around. In the corner just to your left is a large chest with some odd sort of letter lock. On the left wall is a small cuckoo clock. Against the back wall is a fireplace with a pair of grill tongs hanging from the mantle. High up on the back wall, to the right (your right) of the fireplace, is a small window. On the right wall is what appears to be a safe with what look like some sort of metal squares on it, and just to your right on that same wall is a painting of Noah's ark having landed on the mountain, with Noah, the altar, animals disembarking (or rather, disem-ARK-ing...bad joke), and a rainbow in the sky. There is nothing against the back wall except the open hole that was, on the other side, covered by the vent cover. |

plz tu take grill tongz, will need foar makin cheezburgur. Taken. also, examine lock and clock. what iz a lettur lock? You examine the lock, which consists of six small cubic slots in a row. The first and last slots are currently covered with Plexiglass, and the middle four contain small wooden cubes with letters on them. Right now the cubes spell out the word COOL. The clock is nothing special, just a small cuckoo clock. Although, the hands aren't moving...in fact, this clock has no hands. It does have two small wooden handles, one on either side of it. |

Can you pull the handles on the cuckoo clock? You pull on the clock and the entire section of the wall swings down, revealing a large rectangular hole in the wall that appears to contain an iPad dock. Also resting in the hole is a paint scraper. Can you remove the wooden cubes? You can. Are there different letters on the other faces? No, each cube has the same letter on all its faces. |

plz to replace cubes how was found. den try to open chest again. You replace the cubes to say "COOL," then pull on the chest. It opens, and a light breeze comes out. Refreshing. also, what iz hidin behind chest? plz to examine. iz it a kitteh?!??? You reach behind the chest and pull out a rectangular metal keypad, with four rows of three buttons each: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 clear 0 enter You look at the back of the keypad as well. There is a small square magnet at each corner. examine handles. They're apparently for the purpose of lifting the chest. iz chest tu heavy to lift? if can lift, plz do so. anything under it? iz haz cheezburgur inside? You try to lift the chest, but it's just a hair too heavy to lift. Maybe if you ate something, you could get some strength back. |

Switching the order of these posts... also, we haz uncoverd vent nao...can move thingz between roomz? iz gud plan? mabee tu put grill tongz thru hole, den back in first room can make cheezburgur soon? Yes! Since we don't want to get things too wet, we can now use the open vent to transfer items between rooms. Especially the towel -- you can transfer that item back and forth so you can dry off, and no item that shouldn't get wet will, well, get wet. we haz anythin edible? Not yet. if not, plz to examine COOL cubes again. iz say anythin else? Again, they each have the same letter on all 6 sides. can we get anythin besidez air out of chest? Maybe. try LOCO, though I don't know what good that will do. You arrange the cubes to say LOCO in the lock and open the chest. This time, the chest contains a small model train engine. |

Will LOOC, COLO, OOCL, OCLO, or OLCO do anything? You try these, but the chest refuses to open with any of them. plz to find out. also, keep train engine. You set the blocks back to LOCO and remove the train engine. When you close the chest, one of the pieces of Plexiglass covering an empty space retracts into the chest. Now you have five spaces, and only four blocks. Anyway, you've got this train engine. Looks pretty nice, with working wheels and a solid-looking smokestack. Hang on -- there's a small hole in the top of the smokestack. |

plz tu lite gas grill with liter. You put the lighter up to the hole, but there are two problems. One, the gas is not on. Two, the lighter's flame does not go inside the hole. You'll need to light something long and thin on fire and use that to light the grill. will need fire tu make cheezburgur. ...also, needs cheezburgur tu makez cheezburgur. o.o were iz? *luks round foar it* You won't find that until much later. also plz to lite window shade string on fire, if cannot unstickz it. bad staple! You flick the lighter on and burn through the window shade string. The string snaps and the shade rises, revealing a small, highly tinted window set into the wall. Sitting on the window sill is an iPad. Score!!! |

Oooh...balin cat iz gud chess playur. kaylee kitteh nawt so gud. anywai, click awn chess and see wut tu do with it. You click on the chess app. The title screen pops up -- a picture of a book reading "FirstLine Chess" -- then displays a chessboard apparently in the middle of a game. Beneath the board it reads "White to play, Mate in 2." Ah, so this is a chess puzzle. These pieces are on the following squares: White: Pawns on a2, b3, f6, and g2 Knight on d6 Bishop on h5 Rook on h1 King on b1 Black: Pawns on a7, a6, c6, g3 Bishop on d4 Rook on e2 Queen on a3 King on g8 |

Rook to h8? I think that's checkmate ^.^ And it is, as the screen flashes "YOU WIN!" with a smiley face before going back to the title screen. You look down, and a hole opens up in the wall below the iPad dock. A wooden block with the letter R on it comes tumbling out. |

Is there anything different on the iPad screen now? Maybe some sort of app to do with colors? Also, since we're on colors, is the rainbow in the ark painting a "normal" rainbow, with the colors in their normal order (red, orange, yellow, etc...)? or is there something unusual about it? |

Is there anything different on the iPad screen now? Maybe some sort of app to do with colors? No; it's still showing the title screen of the chess program: "FirstLine Chess" on a book cover. Also, since we're on colors, is the rainbow in the ark painting a "normal" rainbow, with the colors in their normal order (red, orange, yellow, etc...)? or is there something unusual about it? It's in the normal order, but now that you look at it, it seems not only large but it also might be sticking out of the painting... |

Is anything on the grill tongs sharp? Not particularly. Can you use them to bend the wire holding the broom back and forth until it breaks? You cannot, as they cannot get a grip. If not, what if you drag the wire along the sharp edge of the paint scraper? You hack at the wire with the paint scraper; it weakens and finally breaks. You take the broom. My original solution was for you to use the lighter to heat the wire until it snapped, but this alternate solution works too. den plz goez tu clozet an chekz it owt...wut iz in dere? There's the broom, the row of books with slots under them, the lever, and...that's about it. Something I forgot to mention earlier: When you closed the chest after scraping the bottom, the final piece of Plexiglass covering a slot lowered. Now all six slots on the chest's letter lock are open, and the five cubes are still in the lock. INVENTORY: Towel Poker Grill tongs 5 wooden cubes (C, L, O, O, R) [in chest lock] Paint scraper Magnetic keypad Model train engine Lighter Gold key Broom |

*recatz balin kitteh'z summary of room* You look around. *ponderz* hao big iz fireplaiz? can fit inside it? plz to try. if can, wut iz inside? hao high iz window? can we reach it with anythin? broom maybe? is teh broom of teh flyin sort? =P hehe, I nevur knoez... |

*ponderz* hao big iz fireplaiz? About the size of your average fireplace. can fit inside it? We could sit in it, or kneel, or crouch (etc), but not stand. plz to try. if can, wut iz inside? The floor of the fireplace is covered with ashes. hao high iz window? Pretty high up. can we reach it with anythin? broom maybe? You can just tap the bottom of the window with the broom. With the poker also. If you had some way to climb up, you might be able to take a better look. is teh broom of teh flyin sort? Nope. =P hehe, I nevur knoez... |

Yes, and they display the following characters: The Angel The Sun The Tower The Devil Death Strength The Hermit Justice The Chariot The Lovers I'm guessing we may need to match them with books that portray the characters on the cards. Or something like this, yeah. |

Fool Magician High Priestess Empress Emperor Hierophant Lovers Chariot Strength Hermit Wheel of Fortune Justice Hanged Man Death Temperance Devil Tower Star Moon Sun Judgement World With that in mind, though: The Angel The Sun The Tower The Devil = Brave New World? Death = A Christmas Carol? Strength The Hermit Justice = The Lottery? (or possibly exchange this one for A Christmas Carol?) The Chariot The Lovers = The Princess Bride? |

With that in mind, though: The Angel The Sun The Tower The Devil = Brave New World? Death = A Christmas Carol? Strength The Hermit Justice = The Lottery? (or possibly exchange this one for A Christmas Carol?) The Chariot The Lovers = The Princess Bride? You'll probably have to put a card in all of them. And who knows if these are right. Maybe the names of the cards (or synonyms) are contained within the first lines of those books? I looked up Brave New World on Google Books, and its first line mentions "a squat grey building of only thirty-four stories", which is certainly a TOWER by today's standards. |

"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on and nothing to eat; it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort." - The Hobbit, by J.R.R. The Princess Bride is probably The Angel ("the most beautiful woman in the world"). Catch-22 is obviously Lovers. The Northern Lights is The Devil ("Lyra and her daemon"). The Hobbit must be The Hermit (living in a hole in the ground) So And Then There Were None must be The Chariot--which it can be because it mentions a carriage. So put the cards into their slots and pull the lever. |

You put the cards into those slots (they stick out halfway, so you can remove them if needed), having already inserted the others, and pull the lever. The cards are quickly pulled into the slots, and you hear a slight hum. Suddenly, the big piece of glass covering the books lowers, and the books are ejected out at you! Two of them make contact, knocking you down. When you get up, you survey the scene. The ten books are scattered across the closet floor, and the shelf where the books were is open. There is a wooden block in the back corner, as well as some writing on the back wall. |

Hmm... I don't quite know how to decode that series of letters right now, so let's put all the cubes into the slots on the chest lock. Since the only thing I can think of is COOLER, make that. Maybe the cooler will haz cheezburgur :-) |

Hmm... I don't quite know how to decode that series of letters right now, so let's put all the cubes into the slots on the chest lock. Since the only thing I can think of is COOLER, make that. Maybe the cooler will haz cheezburgur :-) You rearrange the blocks to say COOLER and open the chest. As you do, Plexiglass slides over the blocks, preventing you from taking them out of the lock. The chest is full of ice, and there appears to be a frozen cheezburger packed in there. B = 2 R = 18 W = 23 K = 11 Q = 17 N = 14 2 2 2 18 23 11 2 17 23 14? 10 10 10 10010 10111 1011 10 10001 1110? Interesting thoughts, but you don't see how this is relevant... ok, mods, promise this is my last post in a row but I just got another idea... "BBBRWKBQWN" = black bishop, black rook, white king, black queen, white knight? nail FILE...rank and file, chess already was in the puzzle, where binary hasn't been... Now this sounds on track! But how can we get this into a numerical combination...? |

push cheezburgur thru slot in lid plz. Or, if possible, hold it in while still grabbed by the grill tongs, so you are sure you can take it out again when it's done! With the cheezburger in the tongs, you hold it through the slot in the grill's lid. You pull it out every few minutes to check on it, and in just a short while, the cheezburger is done. |

Pile the books on top of each other under the window, and try to climb up. You do this and are able to reach the window. When you get up there, you push the window and it opens. It's too small for you to climb out; however, you can reach your arm through. Looking through the opening, you see a small track, the kind you'd race Hot Wheels cars on, slanting down. Also, fortify the stack with the pile of wood and straw, just so it doesn't wobble or anything. This is unnecessary and won't help you, so you don't do it. |

please use the scraper to get the stone out. You pry out the hearth stone with the paint scraper. Were there any hidden holes under the stone? This could mean two things: the hole created by removing the stone, or any holes in the stone itself. Unsure which to focus on, you check both. Looking inside the newly-created hole in the hearth, you see a code: 85709. Looking at the underside of the stone itself, you discover a small keyhole. How about the hole where you found the hatchet--is it otherwise empty (and with no hidden tunnels or caves on the sides)? That hole is empty. |

take the silver key. Try the door that's locked you in =) *hopes that does it* and if so, then go get a cheeseburger ~.^ You slip the silver key into the lock on the metal door and turn. The door swings open. Freedom at last... ... OK, not so fast. You are about to step out of the room, but you notice a massive robot blocking the exit. As you turn to face it, its eyes start glowing and it raises its arms, both of which have whips (or something similar) on the end. Suddenly, the robot begins twirling its arms madly, the whips moving so fast you can barely see them. So apparently, there's one more obstacle you have to get through before you can leave. Great. Hold the hatchet out in front of you, so the whips catch on the blade and get severed off? |

Hold the hatchet out in front of you, so the whips catch on the blade and get severed off? You try, but one of the robot's twirling whips snatches the hatchet out of your hands and flings it aside. And beat the robot with the frying pan. It's twelve inches of AWESOME! =) You try that, but the pan is only good as a shield, as it blocks the whips from hitting you. Also unfortunately, it's not good for long, as a whipping, er, whip manages to snatch it away from you. |

Try throwing the stone at its head. It bounces off ineffectively. |

Light the poker to heat it up. The poker is too thick to heat effectively with the lighter. Then stab the robot. You try this, but the whips snag the poker. However, both of the robot's whips managed to catch the poker, and they have become tangled around it, so there is now a massively whirling poker. The poker, being flung around, manages to bash a hole in the grill's propane tank, and gas starts leaking into the room. |

Throw the towel over the robot's head so it can't see. And use the paint scraper to cut its whips if you can. |

Throw the towel over the robot's head so it can't see. It has no eyes anyway, but you chuck the towel at it. It hooks around the poker and gets whipped around for a while before being flung away. And use the paint scraper to cut its whips if you can. You try, but the poker knocks it out of your hand. Your inventory has dropped to just the grill tongs, lighter, and wrench now. |

Use the tongs to grab the whips and pull them out of the robot's grasp. You try, but the whips are attached to the robot's arms, and the poker manages to knock the tongs out instead. HINT: The gas leak was supposed to happen. |

light the lighter? O_O *hides behind Balin* If we do that in this room, we'll blow ourselves up. But the whole lighter-bit sounds like a good idea... |

O.O No blowing us up allowed =( if only we could get through that too-small window...>.< OK, let's try not to blow ourselves up...but... HINT: The wall separating the two main rooms (not the closet-like room) is more solid than the other walls. I meant to note that in the room description but forgot to do so. |

*tacklehugs* BALIN!!! I'm home!!! =) *tries not to squish Matt in excitement, but manages to slip Balin a cheezburgur* ~.^ *gets back up, eats cheezburger* Swim back into the other room, then light the lighter, throw it through the grate and slam it shut. You slip the lighter and wrench back through the grate, swim back to the other side, then toss the lit lighter back through the grate into the gas-filled room. Just seconds later, the tank explodes. BOOM ................ When the dust settles, you swim back through the pool. Emerging, you see that the first room is, well, gone. So is the robot, as the walls, and everything within them, have been blown outwards. You step out of the pool and walk over the rubble, leaving the two rooms behind you. **********SPOILER********** Excellent work, everyone, most notably Kaylee and Biograd! New puzzle soon. |
