Would anyone you know do it as well?
Was this a planned thing?
Or did a set of circumstances fall into place that left you with no other choice but to do it?
Did you gain something by doing it?
Lose something by doing it?
Did doing it affect anyone else? If so was it:
Your family?
Your friends?
Your neighbors?
Your co-workers?
Did it involve rule breaking?
Did the outcome of what you did produce a good result, an expected result, a bad result?
Did you sell or trade something of greater value for something of lesser value?
Was your motive for doing it for monetary gain?
Did you even have a motive?
If so was it for prestige?
Notoriety?
to secure a different position in your company?
Did you give something away?

Or did a set of circumstances fall into place that left you with no other choice but to do it? yesish

I found these difficult to answer. I suggest finding out what it was that I did first.

Was it some lunacy like going over Niagra falls in a barrel? Anything that dramatic?
Did you compete in something?
Did you get into something?
Get on something?
Did you wear something?
Did you digest something?
Climb on tp of something.
Was it a physical action?

(and yes, I have found that questons are not so easy to answer when it comes to these puzzles; I empathize with you).

Did studying this thing give you new insight? Or cause you to change your profession? Did it cause a "eureka" moment, an enlightenment of sorts?
Do I need to work out what you were studying? If so was it anything on:
magic?
science related?
any of the academics such as language, english, history, math, geography?
health related?
was it to be an improvement?
Or just an accomplishment?

naturally when you run out of ideas you shoot for the ridiculous. That said, were you reading the Tarot? Sky writing, morse code?

This "reading", is it reading in the traditional sense such as normal words on a page? And is it something anyone would read or would want to read? And is this reading material easily accessible to any one.

In the interests of not dragging it on unnecessarily, the words were on paper, though whether you would call it a page or not could be debated - the yesish to 'on a page?' was to avoid anyone making an FA, not intentionally to cause one : )

it was covered in the 'no to all' comment from yesterday

RECAP

They must have thought I was crazy.

They (human adults - both males and females) must have thought I (Andy) was crazy when I did something I wasn't planned on doing. What I did was a result of reading some words on paper, although whether you could call it a page can be debated. They weren't people I knew personally, and it's relevant why and where i was reading the words - established as an indoor place that isn't private. It's also a relevant fact that I'm married.

There are other bits and pieces discovered but mostly 'what it's not' and nothing I've deemed significant enough to include in a recap.

To complete the first stage of the puzzle, work out what it was I was reading, where I was, and what I did.
: )

Were you inside a government building? Inside a railroad station? A hospital? A school? A church?

Was the piece of paper affixed to a wall? a door? on the floor? Was it of standard A4 / letter dimensions? smaller? bigger?

If you weren't married, would you have behaved differently?

Was whatever was written there intended for everyone to read? Was it a warning? An information passed by the owners of the building?

privately owned building but open to the public: a museum? the royal palace? the entrance into a company? do you need to buy a ticket to enter there? do you go there regularly or was it a one-time occasion?

If the paper was not intended to be read by the general public, was it intended for the employees only? For one specific person? Did you do the "crazy" act in order to read the paper? Or you reacted after you read that? Was the paper handwritten? printed? Was it a post-it on someone's desk?

The handwritten paper -- was it a shopping list? Was it written for you? For someone else? Did your wife write it? Relevant who wrote it anyway?

I know my wife gives me written instructions all the time :-)

Were you in a pawn shop, or a porn shop? LOL!
Auction house? In a shop that sells women's garments? Jewelers? Drug store? Was it even a trade store where folks buy stuff? Was it an indoor flea market? A gallery?

Did your wife know that you were there?
Was whatever you read written to YOU?
Did the writing come from someone who worked in the building other than the owner?
Was the writing an invitation?
A list of things?
Was it a bill?
Did the writing reference someone else?
Was it from someone you knew?
This building, is it theme orientated? Like say a hardware store only has hardware, or does it have many departments?
When someone goes into this shop, do they typically carry something out that they did not come in with?
Has it anything to do with children?
Was YOUR reaction to what you read one of desire, amazement, anger, shock?

The handwritten paper -- was it a shopping list? yes! Was it written for you? yes For someone else? no Did your wife write it? yes Relevant who wrote it anyway? yes

Were you in a pawn shop, or a porn shop? LOL!
Auction house? In a shop that sells women's garments? Jewelers? Drug store? Was it even a trade store where folks buy stuff? Was it an indoor flea market? A gallery? none of these specifically, it was a supermarket - although this is only slightly relevant

Did your wife know that you were there? yes
Was whatever you read written to YOU? yes
Did the writing come from someone who worked in the building other than the owner? no
Was the writing an invitation?
A list of things? yes, see above - it was a shopping list
Was it a bill?
Did the writing reference someone else? no
Was it from someone you knew? yes, my wife
This building, is it theme orientated? Like say a hardware store only has hardware, or does it have many departments? this, as above, it was a supermarket
When someone goes into this shop, do they typically carry something out that they did not come in with? groceries
Has it anything to do with children? \b {no}
Was YOUR reaction to what you read one of desire, amazement, anger, shock? none of these really

so we're nearly there for the first part of the puzzle. I was in a supermarket, I read a shopping list and I did something.

Wild lateral thought: Are cell phones relevant? could you have been "reading" the prices, etc, with your smart phone and sending them to your spouse or significant other?

I sometimes wonder how people managed to shop before the invention of cell phones!

wow, loads of questions. all 'no' unless otherwise specified : )

Did the thing you had done require an item? If yes, was the item in your possession? Someone else's possession? Shop's possession? Was it something people usually use for shopping?

Are cell phones relevant? could you have been "reading" the prices, etc, with your smart phone and sending them to your spouse or significant other?

did something on the list sound like an instruction? so you did the thing?

was your reaction amusement? YES, but more than this, i laughed out loud uncontrollably for a significant length of time. The other shoppers in the immediate vicinity must have thought I was crazy disbelief? a touch of this puzzlement? wonder?

is a pun involved? a double meaning?

Did you go to the wrong store by mistake?
Had you made a mistake or misjudgement of some kind? a very slight misjudgement is relevant
Did you pick up anything from the store you were in? Could you have picked up anything that was on the list from the store you were in? yes

so there is the puzzle. A man goes into a supermarket, reads a shopping list and bursts out laughing uncontrollably. What happened?

The shopping list was written by your wife, correct?

Was there anything else written on the shopping list (except for the products she wanted you to buy)? Was something drawn on the shopping list?
Did she write it in verse?

Buy some apples, milk and bread
and some shampoo for my head.
Please pick up a pound of cherries
and a pint of Ben & Jerry's.
Don't forget to buy some wine,
and a Little Tree, scented "pine".

Did your wife write the funny thing on purpose? in the spirit of the question, yes, but i strongly suspect there's an FA Did anyone else besides your wife write something on the list? no

hint : the FA above is important to resolve as that is what ultimately makes it a lateral thinking puzzle in my honest opinion. otherwise it's just 'my wife once wrote something funny on a shopping list and when i saw it i burst out laughing. guess what it was she wrote.' : )

Did your wife also consider this thing funny? yope, it would be useful to clarify what thing you mean, you may have an FA Did she mean it to be funny? yes If you had read the shopping list at home, would you still have burst out laughing? yesish

Was it the justaposition of two ore more items which was funny? it would be really useful if you could rephrase this for me. there may be something slightly relevant to the puzzle and OTRT in what you're asking.
Was it something which related to another aspect of your life? noish Like she asked you to get ribs and she's home with cracked ribs? nothing like this

Was it funny because of your circumstances at the time? only that i was in the supermarket. at least in how i think you meant it, if you knew the full circumstances you'd have the answer to the puzzle. hope that makes some kind of sense. explore like where you were in the store? no Or what you were standing next to? no

great leap shez - to solve the puzzle, find out a little bit more about what was on the shopping list that you wouldn't normally expect to find on there, and why I found it so funny. There may still be an FA in there to iron out before you get to the answer.

People? Body parts? Places (example: Buy Scotland, while you're out)? yes, these kinds of things

Experiences? no

The exact things on the list are unimportant to solving the puzzle. You just need to tell me why I found the nonsensical items so funny.

****RECAP****
I arrived at the supermarket to do the grocery shopping armed with a shopping list written by and given to me by my wife. After a couple of minutes I noticed that the list contained numerous items that I couldn't possibly buy (nonsensical items, some rude -the exact items aren't important to solving the puzzle). I laughed out loud for a significant period of time, which must have made it look like I was a complete nutjob to any other shoppers in the immediate vicinity. What was going on here? What was so funny?

Did you imagine these items being in the store? Or imagine a store where they were sold? Imagine people buying them? Imagine some other funny situation?

was the list funny because you'd done the exact same thing to her?

was it because she wasn't expecting you to consult the list?

was the list funny because you'd done the exact same thing to her? YES! many times - here comes the spoiler...

**************SPOILER***************

This is a true story from a couple of years ago. Over a period of many months I'd really amused myself by putting on my best Mrs H handwriting and disguising nonsense in the middle of the shopping lists she kept on show on the kitchen side. She thought it was pretty funny the first time, but over time became rather annoyed with me doing it - especially as a couple of times it turned out she'd been with her mum. Consequently she put an end to my fun when she stopped leaving them on show.

A few months down the line I was sent on a very rare solo monthly shopping trip, list in hand. I was in the fruit and veg section when I noticed she'd got me back good and proper!

Thanks everyone for playing and sticking with it : )

Nice one!

Another classic case of us over thinking the answer.

That is too funny. I want to do that to my husband now! He's a good sport, though, and I think he'll get a good laugh.
