Any people relevant besides him and the ones trying to cross the bridge? Would being poor help one crossing the bridge? Or rich? Or armed? Or strong? Or many?

RECAP.
There is a man who stands on the bridge, waits for wealthy aristocrates to walk past him and robs them. He also kills
Still to find: the reference of puzzle sentence and a title. Should go quick now.

is the question giving the wealthy aristocrat a choice between left and right? would the aristocrat answer the question? does his fate depend on the answer to the q? Someone else's fate? is it the left or right side of the road/bridge? is it the highwayman's left or right hand?
By asking the question, is the man attempting to find out where the money/jewels etc are? would he ask this before he has robbed them? During? After?

is the highwayman using irony? Probably. is he going to throw them off the bridge anyway? Yes. does it make a difference what they answer? Yes - see below.

GalFisk:
Is he giving them a choice as to which side of the bridge they'll be thrown off of? YES!

********SPOILER***********
When I visited Lisboa in October, the guide showed us a bridge, which once used to be the favourite place for a walk of aristocracy. She also told us a story about the 19th century highwayman who stood on the bridge, robbed passing wealthy aristocrates and - being a gentleman - politely asked them which side of the bridge they'll be thrown off of.

Thanks for playing.
