People thought Clella was very smart -- until they learned she was from New York City. How come? Knowledge or skills that it would be easier to get in NYC than elsewhere is not relevant.

Were "people" from Texas? They were no more likely be to be from Texas than from anywhere else (other than NYC, of course.)(a la the Pace commercial) I don't know that commercial.

Well, maybe I could find a link for it on YouTube, but for now, the gist of it is, from memory: New York guy walks up to a few cowboys, and he's decided to use some generic sauce on his food. They ask him where he's from, and he says "New York City."

"NEW YORK CITY?!" The Texas cowboy guys sound horrified.

"Around here, we use Pace." And they show a bottle of Pace Picante Sauce. The real stuff, of course. 'Cause guys from New York City are (according to the commercial) the stupid ones. Hehe. (My dad's from New York, but I find it more amusing than insulting)

Do they now think that Clella is stupid? or just not so smart? Is she particularly smart in a specific area or subject? or are we talking street smart? Is her occupation relevant?

my usual enquiry ....are you Clella?

Is her comparative intelligence to her peers relevent? Like, maybe she won the state spelling bee, but New York has the worst spellers in the world (not saying it does, just a hypothetical)?

Did they think she was generally intelligent? Impressive in one certain field? In one certain task? Did they think she was smart for knowing one specific thing?

Is being thrifty with money relevant? noNot owning a car? no any environmental considerations? No--I'm about as likely to be thrifty as to be an environmentalist, i.e. not at all

In the area they felt you were clever would the feel that everyone from New York would display said cleverness? Most people from NYC would be considered smart for this reason or did they feel that being from New York gave you an advantage in something? no

Would this work for a city of a similar size to New York? e.g. Paris? London?

Is the geography of New York relevant? It's climate? Transportation? Ethnic diversity? political beliefs relevant? Anything to do with education? entertainment? the arts? (using sledgehammer approach) Literature?

If I had visited NY for lets say a month would I be likely to be able to demonstrate this smartness?

Did they think she had accomplished something most people have not accomplished? Would someone from New York have been more likely to do this "something" than people from other areas? Less likely? Is the something done indoors? Outdoors? Both? Is it something a child could do? Is it done in public? Does it involve animals? Would it cost money to be able to do this?

Did they think she did something, but she didn't actually do it?

Did she do something that made the others think she was smart, but actually all New Yorkers do it?

Was there a misunderstanding between what she actually meant to say and what they thought she meant?

Was the area they thought she was good at only math, or something more specific?

Do you need to know any New Yorkers to solve this puzzle? :D

Did they think she did something, but she didn't actually do it? yope, but you're ORT

Did she do something that made the others think she was smart, but actually all New Yorkers do it? yes, although a large majority of New Yorkers (rather than all) do it

Was there a misunderstanding between what she actually meant to say and what they thought she meant? no

Was the area they thought she was good at only math no, or something more specific? no

Do you need to know any New Yorkers to solve this puzzle? :D no

Did they misunderstand she said? For instance, she might have said, "I went to Juilliard" meaning that she had been to the campus for a tour or performance or something, and they took it to mean she'd been a student there. Is it something like that?

Nice, Shez.

Are they misunderstanding something she says?
Do they think she's smart because she speaks quickly, implying quick mental process, when really that's just how all New Yorkers talk (although I'd still argue it's a form of intelligence)?
Are accents relevant?

So does she say one particular thing, and while they understand her meaning, they think it means she is smart although it is not particularly intelligent?

Or is it more like something that comes up in a lot of things she says?

So when they hear where she is from, do they realize that they cannot tell whether or not she is smart based on what she says? Are they correct in this realization? Are they relying on a New Yorker stereotypes?

Gay marriage relevant? New York recently passed a law legalizing gay marriage, but added language saying religious institutions could not be penalized for not recognizing or performing them... Relevant? Five boroughs relevant? By "New York City" do you just mean Manhattan? Or should we include Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx as well? If just Manhattan, should we include Marble Hill, Roosevelt Island, and those other fun places in "New York County" that aren't on Manhattan Island?

Is there something relevantly different about the schooling system in NY? Maybe it's divided differently, so she mentions that she started high school at x years of age which is normal for NY but would be precocious elsewhere in the country? Anything like this at all? Do people think she skipped ahead a year? That she did advanced work for her age group?

Do children just start school a year earlier than in the rest of the country? Do parents have more freedom to choose to enrol their kids in school a year early? Do children leave school earlier in New York?

Did Clella start school a year early? Finish a year early? Actually get skipped ahead a year?

Is where the year boundaries lie relevant? Ie most schools start in September, is New York different in this respect?

********* SPOILER **************
When I was in college, my fellow students sometimes thought I was very smart because I started college just 3 months after my 17th birthday -- until they learned that it was standard practice for most New York City schoolchildren to skip a grade in elementary school. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, and for solving it, Keyannpepper, & please check out my new puzzle you know where.
