So, let's start with a few more basics. Is the first "he", the "his", and the second "he" all the same? Did he do something while drunk that gave him the reputation? |

did he perform something? No - wouldn't call it performing. which was easier for him while he was drunk? Yessish; don't think he would have done what he did if he had been sober. like walking on a think wall? or something similar? Not these. HINT: It was less what he did than in the way he reacted to something. did others know he was drunk? No did it matter? Yes, VERY relevant. the fact that he was drunk helped him do whatever he did? to behave the way he did. consciously ? unconsciously?this Wellcome, Blue. Starting off well! |

Okay, when did he react to the thing? Morning? Afternoon? Evening? Night? In the story, at night; not sure what it was IRL. Exact hour relevant? NoIf so, may I use the [LTPF list of hours]? I meant 'when' in a little broader sense than that, but the time of day is somewhat relevant too. |

Clarification & hint: I said world events were relevant. However, the event in this puzzle was not really a 'world event.' It was, though, a noted event, and all of you on the forum will have heard of it. We have established it was 20th century. Might be helpful to consider the decade. |

Did the earthquake cause something to almost hit him? But he wasn't afraid? Because he was drunk? Earning him his reputation? That about sums it up. ************SPOILER*************** This is from one of P.G. Wodehouse's Mr. Mulliner stories. Mr. Mulliner had a seemingly endless number of relatives, and this one is "The Story of William" (Mr. Mulliner's uncle). He was courting a girl in San Francisco, but she spurned him for a self-described explorer and adventurer. William was just too timid! The unhappy and previously teetotalling William went out and got drunk. On his way back to his hotel, he saw something that made him think he had permanent d.t.s. Specifically he saw "a 4'8" man eating hash with his toes." Unknown to William, a troupe of performing midgets was in the neighborhood. When the quake woke him up in the middle of the night, he thought his mind was still playing tricks on him, and went back to sleep. His girl-friend came to his bedside (no walls to stop her) and was immpressed by William's coolness. The adventurer had run off as fast as his feet of clay could carry him. They were married and lived happily ever after. |
