(This is wholly unrelated to the "Are you sure?" above, I'M sure) She woke up beside him. He told her not to scream. Soon, she was smiling. |

She is H/A/F? She = she? She = her? He is H/A/F? Related to LOTR? Are they in bed? Are they outside? Before she woke, had she fallen asleep? Or fallen unconscious from some other means? If the latter, chemical means? physical means (as in being knocked out)? Would she have screamed because she was frightened? Excited? Were they alone? Did he tell her not to scream to avoid waking others? attract their attention? "Soon"= within a few seconds? minutes? hours? days? longer? Did she smile because of something she saw? heard? Did he give her something? |

She = young H/A/F. She = she = her. He is H/A/M (which I presume is what you meant, silly kitteh =) ) Yes, related to LOTR! good question. They are in bed, yes. She had been asleep. He expected her to be frightened, but she didn't know she should be. They were alone. Yes to both. About half an hour. Saw and heard. He did give her something. Excellent progress, ciaobella kitteh. *givz cheezburgur!* |

H/A/M, of course. I spent about 6 hours doing homework this evening, so my brain is sleepy. *akseptz cheezburgur* I don't know much about LOTR, but... Is specific LOTR knowledge necessary to solve this puzzle? Is she at her home? At his? Do they live together? Relevant? Is she smiling because he gave her something or because of something else? They are alone, but they are afraid of waking others or attracting their attention? Is there something separating them from these others? A thin wall, maybe? |

*hugz hugz* Yes, although it's from the Appendices rather than central to the plot of the main story (or rather, it's not *obviously* central). They live in the same "house", though "house" is rather misleading - another word would be better. They don't exactly live together, at least not yet. She's smiling because he gave her something as well as something else. They are alone in her room - the walls are probably fairly thick, though I'm not sure about the doors. And there are a lot of people close by, even though it's the middle of the night. |

Since this is going *nowhere*, let's forget that this is LOTR-related, since these two characters are NOT LotR characters (but...) REFOCUS/RECAP (already? I feel like I'm losing my touch) A H/A/M surprises a younger H/A/F in bed. They live in the same "house" though "house" is not exactly the best word. He expected her to be frightened, but she wasn't. They were alone, and he told her to remain quiet so as not to attract attention. It took about half an hour for the events of this puzzle to transpire. There's a few usual LTPF questions that haven't been asked yet. |

So foster siblings that are now engaged, perhaps? exactly and precisely so Did they live in the same complex but in different parts? 'complex' might not be the right word either, you need something more specific, though I suppose it is a complex of a sort...In the same part? yes, in the same wing Is there anything more I need to find out about the residence? plenty - what is it, as "complex" is more the definition of "residence + lots of other buildings... The item he gave her: is it alive? it may be, although she'll have to keep it that way is it hard? on the contrary, it's very soft is it wearable? perhaps, and I can see her wearing it is it expensive? not in the least is it available in modern times/ real locations? oh yes...well, not that specific sort, but you could doubtless get something similar just about everywhere |

In modern times/ real locations, do we have this type of complex? If so, is it a hospital? camp of some kind? commune? caravan? If not in modern times, has this type of residence existed in history? Did it exist 50 years ago? 100? 300? 1000? The item: plant? animal? Are the items we have (similar items, you said) alive? Is it typically worn by your average person? Men? Women? Children? |

In modern times/ real locations, do we have this type of complex? yes, although it's not as common as the ones you listed - these 'compounds' tend to be quite old buildings, and quite famous If so, is it a hospital? camp of some kind? commune? caravan? If not in modern times, has this type of residence existed in history? Did it exist 50 years ago? 100? 300? 1000? all of these, although more of them were lived in 1000 - 200 years ago than now. The item: plant? this animal? Are the items we have (similar items, you said) alive? yes Is it typically worn by your average person? yes, by each of these on certain occasions...adults more often in formal ceremonies, children in these as well as playing, and then mostly girls Men? Women? Children? |

and the 'structure', aka the 'complex', is manmade, although supported by a natural structure...to save you non-LOTR-fan-flailing, I'll tell you it's built into a mountain. This is not usual for this type of building however. |

Is it usually supported by a natural structure? So a young gentleman woke his fiancee/ former foster sister and expected her to be frightened. (If I woke up and was engaged to my adopted family's son- my brother- I'd be a little frightened, too. But I'm not going to judge.) She was not frightened. He gave her some flowers. Something else occurred over the course of the next half hour (This is a family-friendly puzzle, right?), and then she was happy. Have I understood correctly so far? Was it a special occasion? |

Is it usually supported by a natural structure? Buildings of this type are not necessarily supported by a natural structure, but they are normally fortified somehow. So a young gentleman woke his fiancee/ former foster sister and expected her to be frightened. (If I woke up and was engaged to my adopted family's son- my brother- I'd be a little frightened, too. But I'm not going to judge.) lol! to expand, she was the child naturally born into the family, he was the foster child, though her elder, and his heritage is relevant - you can base questions on real cultures, as I adapt what Tolkien said about his culture to a real-world one or two She was not frightened. Right, and she should have been...a normal person in her situation might have been, for whatever value you give "normal". He gave her some flowers. Something else occurred over the course of the next half hour (This is a family-friendly puzzle, right?), and then she was happy. To expand, the "something" happened before he presented her with flowers, both together eliciting the happiness. Have I understood correctly so far? Mostly. Was it a special occasion? |

Is he a criminal? yope (he was a thief and an escaped slave in his home country, but the thieving was born of necessity) Is social class relevant? it should help identify the 'complex' pretty well If so, was she wealthy? this one middle-class? poor? Same questions for him. he was poor in his home country, but when he was taken in by her father (before she was born) he became nominally wealthy, middle class (working class is a better word) in practice |

So a gentleman sneaked into a princess's room; he was engaged to the princess, who used to be his foster sister. He told her not to scream, which she didn't because she wasn't afraid, even though most women would be afraid if some man sneaked into her bed in the middle of the night. Something happened, and he gave her flowers. She was happy. This has to do with them being engaged, but it wasn't a proposal or elopement, and "wedding day" gets a "no-ish". The night before, then? Did they decide to consummate the marriage a little early? Was she expecting him? Or does she regularly have men sneak into her bed at night? |

So a gentleman sneaked into a princess's room; he was engaged to the princess, who used to be his foster sister. Correct on all counts so far. He told her not to scream, which she didn't because she wasn't afraid, even though most women would be afraid if some man sneaked into her bed in the middle of the night. Also correct. Something happened, and he gave her flowers. She was happy. Yes to all this. This has to do with them being engaged, but it wasn't a proposal or elopement, and "wedding day" gets a "no-ish". Right - it was a "wedding ritual" common to his birth culture, but not hers, and he didn't follow through all the way. The night before, then? About a week before, I think. Did they decide to consummate the marriage a little early? NO...but if he HAD followed through, that's what would have happened. And in both cultures, the actual marriage - consummation, though in hers there's plenty more ceremony to go along with it. Was she expecting him? No. Or does she regularly have men sneak into her bed at night? No. |

No - in any case, consummation wasn't his intention, at that point anyway (although if he was following the custom of his country, it would have been). They got as far as "he got into her bed and she woke up." It would be better if you could try to figure out why she wasn't scared. |

She didn't automatically realize it was him, but she was more confused than frightened. Then she realized it was him, but she didn't know his intentions. The thought of what a man might do to a woman by sneaking into her bed like that didn't even cross her mind (not that he realized this, at first). Let's just say she's not exactly *normal*...work on that, hmm? =) |

Intellectual/ Developmental disability (mental retardation, for example)? Personality disorder? Mood disorder (depression, for example)? Psychotic disorder (schizophrenia, postpartum psychosis, etc.)? Is the disorder a result of a physical problem, such as a tumor or brain injury? Mental retardation is a somewhat outdated term used to describe a condition of lower than average intellectual functioning. Developmental disability is the new term, but many argue that this can encompass a wide variety of conditions, including brain injury (before, during, or after birth), autism, and a number of other disorders. Is it similar to any of this? |

Mental retardation is a somewhat outdated term used to describe a condition of lower than average intellectual functioning. Mental retardation might be part of her disability...although it wasn't permanent, in the way I've written her, she improved as she got older, slowly, anyway. Developmental disability is the new term, but many argue that this can encompass a wide variety of conditions, including brain injury (before, during, or after birth), autism, and a number of other disorders. Is it similar to any of this? I have mild cerebral palsy, and I think I was going for severe cerebral palsy when I wrote her. However, autism might possibly be more accurate. Hmm...well, anyway, her people call her 'fae-touched' as they don't have our modern terms for either. |

Ah. "Fae-touched". Not in my Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, but good information to know. So, her fiance slipped into her bed at night. She was "fae-touched" and did not realize that she was supposed to be afraid. Her mother pops in at about that time- my guess is that she also had a habit of sneaking into the bedrooms of others late in the night- and sees her daughter in bed with the man. She explains to the daughter that why he expected her to be afraid. He gives her some flowers. Is all that correct? |

Ah. "Fae-touched". Not in my Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, but good information to know. lol! So, her fiance slipped into her bed at night. yes She was "fae-touched" and did not realize that she was supposed to be afraid. yes, although she didn't wake just when he got into her bed Her mother pops in at about that time-I think he'd spent a few hours in bed with her by then without waking her my guess is that she also had a habit of sneaking into the bedrooms of others late in the night or early in the morning- and sees her daughter in bed with the man. yes She explains to the daughter that why he expected her to be afraid. He gives her some flowers. Is all that correct? yes, other than the slight alterations. I think this is about ready for the ***SPOILER***, especially since I'm currently hosting my Emma kitteh and not likely to focus well on one puzzle, much less two. Well done Ciaobella kitteh. This is from my fanfic "A Children's Story", (name borrowed from a story I've *already* done a puzzle on) about the daughter of Aragorn and Arwen, and their foster-son, taking place some twenty-five years after the end of Return of the King. "Are You Sure, Sweetling?" the puzzle title, is the title of the sequel, which takes place on their wedding night, or rather wedding morning. In this story, Karim, some twenty years older than Celebriel, has been raised by Aragorn and Arwen since the age of fourteen, when Celebriel was born. Following the traditions of his homeland (based on some ancient Middle Eastern traditions I've read about) he 'captured' her in her bed, though he forewent the removing her to *his* bed, and um, consummating the marriage as would be traditional. He has rather more consideration for her than that, thanks to his foster-parents' teachings. Most young women would likely be freaked out by waking up in the night/early hours of the morning to find someone grabbing them in their bed and telling them not to scream, thinking they were going to be violated. But this never crossed Celebriel's mind because of how innocent and naive she was...she was just thoroughly confused. Needless to say, after her mother's explanation, she needed Karim's bouquet of flowers and reassurances of love to calm her. They did go on to marry shortly after that, and Karim has treated her like the princess she is. Her brother, Eldarion, will be King after their father (and I've written about that, too.) |

Actually, he's 14 years older than Celebriel, she's 20 in this story. *facepalm* He's 34. |
