Because of the doughnut and the candy, he thought I was a bad person. He = H/A/M. I = me, gregoryuconn, H/Young Adult/M. |

Bad = had broken the law? acted immorally? flouted some social norm / expectation? In hindsight, do you agree with his judgment that what you did was bad? If not, did he misinterpret the facts as they actually were? (e.g. thinking you were being rude in not offering the candy to your friends on the table, when they had actually previously told you they weren't interested.) Or did he simply put a different spin than you did on the events that happened? The following questions are about the doughnut and candy - if the answers are different for each, please answer separately: When he made the assessment that you were bad, were you in possession of the doughnut and candy? Before making the judgment? If you weren't, did he nonetheless think that you were? Did he think that you had in some way illegitimately gained possession of them? |

By flouting social norms, I mean something like which service industry workers one should or shouldn't tip (waiters, bellboys, taxi drivers etc.), when/to whom one should offer food that one is eating, what one does on Halloween re: Trick or Treat, etc. Essentially, some unwritten expectation that society (or certain people within society) holds other people to. Is this a better summary of the way in which he thought you were "bad" than acting immorally? Before he made this judgment, did you have any contact with this man at all? Is he a family member of yours? A friend? Acquaintance? Employer/employee? Colleagues? Customer/server? Are any details about this man relevant, apart from his ability to form judgments about the situation, and the reasons for his false judgment? Did the man misunderstand the facts because he didn't see something important? Didn't hear something? smell something? taste something? Have some other sensoral experience that I thought too minor to include? :-) Didn't have background knowledge that provided crucial context, much like the "offering candy" example above? Assumed something that turned out not to be true? (e.g. Man and woman sitting at table with children, therefore they must be the children's parents.) The same standard as my last post with splitting the dougnut/candy questions: Were the doughnut and candy edible? Were they eaten by you? or anyone else? Did someone choose (or appear to choose?) not to eat them? Plan to eat them? Were they offered to anyone? Apparently not offered to anyone? Bought by you? Sold by you? |

Is this a better summary of the way in which he thought you were "bad" than acting immorally? No.... Let's say acting immorally, although that's not completely precise. Before he made this judgment, did you have any contact with this man at all? assume no Is he a family member of yours? A friend? Acquaintance? Employer/employee? Colleagues? Customer/server? I think he's some University employee, probably faculty. He was too old to be a student. Are any details about this man relevant, apart from his ability to form judgments about the situation, and the reasons for his false judgment? The fact that he is a member of the UConn community, and if he is indeed a Professor, I'm guessing his department is slightly relevant (although since I don't actually know his department, it could be a red herring). Did the man misunderstand the facts because he didn't see something important? Yesish Didn't hear something? smell something? taste something? Have some other sensoral experience that I thought too minor to include? :-) No to all Didn't have background knowledge that provided crucial context, sort of much like the "offering candy" example above? But not in this way Assumed something that turned out not to be true? (e.g. Man and woman sitting at table with children, therefore they must be the children's parents.) In a way The same standard as my last post with splitting the dougnut/candy questions: Were the doughnut and candy edible? Yes Were they eaten by you? Eventually, yes. or anyone else? No Did someone choose (or appear to choose?) not to eat them? Assume no Plan to eat them? Me Were they offered to anyone? No, irr Apparently not offered to anyone? Well, I suppose yes, but not relevant. Bought by you? Yes to both Sold by you? No to both |

Is the time of day at which you bought the items relevant? Did you obtain both items at the same location? It seems logical that at some point this man made a passing judgement about you based on your possession of the items - is this correct? Had you ever seen this other person prior to this occasion? Had he ever seen you? Had you ever interacted with him? Could the man see you when you obtained the items? Did he see you before you obtained the items? Was there a time frame during which he saw you, then didn't see you, then saw you again? |

Is the time of day at which you bought the items relevant? Only in that this is a true story so only certain times would work. Did you obtain both items at the same location? No, not particularly relevant unless you're a UConn student. It seems logical that at some point this man made a passing judgement about you based on your possession of the items - is this correct? Well, it was more than just my possession of them - there's some aspect you haven't determined yet. Had you ever seen this other person prior to this occasion? Had he ever seen you? Had you ever interacted with him? assume no to all Could the man see you when you obtained the items? At the exact moment I obtained the items? No. But after I had them and before he made the judgement, yes. Did he see you before you obtained the items? No Was there a time frame during which he saw you, then didn't see you, then saw you again? Assume no. |

Did the man see you do something with the items? If so: eat them? place them somewhere? give them to someone? throw them away? throw the wrappers/packaging away? |

Did you put them on a table? On the floor? On something that belonged to someone? Is anyone else involved in this situation besides you and this other man? |

HINT: I had multiple doughnuts. However, only one caused the man to think I was a bad person. |

Ok, so you had multiple donuts. Were they all in one box? In a bag? In some other kind of package? The "one donut" that gave the man this impression - did you eat it? Did you take it from its container/package and set it down on something? Is the kind of donut relevant? Did the man think that your act showed lack of concern for other people? For animals? For nature? Did you ever eat the donut? Did someone else eat it? Did an animal eat it? Was it never eaten? |

Ok, so you had multiple donuts. yes Were they all in one box? yesish In a bag? In some other kind of package? no to both, "all in one box" was closest The "one donut" that gave the man this impression - did you eat it? Did you take it from its container/package and set it down on something? Well, I set it down on the box. That should clear up the yesish above. there's more to it though. Is the kind of donut relevant? No Did the man think that your act showed lack of concern for other people? this For animals? For nature? Did you ever eat the donut? this, but not particularly relevant Did someone else eat it? Did an animal eat it? Was it never eaten? did you get out your donuts at a weightwatchers meeting and start munching? no |

No questions in a week and it was just getting stale for weeks before that. I have a new puzzle so I'll just ****SPOILER*** I had bought a dozen doughnuts at a Krispy Kreme sale to benefit the charity Love146, which seeks to prevent child slavery. Before I ate them, I walked to the cafe in the Math-Science building and bought a pack of Reese's peanut butter cups (the chocolate). I put one of them on the box, and also took one of the doughnuts out of the box to eat it. What I didn't realize was that there was an ad on the box for Love146, saying "LOVE146 [new line] END CHILD SLAVERY". Between the peanut butter cup and the doughnut, the "146" and the "END" were covered. So, it read "LOVE CHILD SLAVERY". Someone walked by and thought I was a bad person for having doughnuts that said "LOVE CHILD SLAVERY" on the box. Check out my new puzzle in a minute. |

Ahhh, now I see. That's a completely different angle than I was thinking of, so my next set of questions would have been a dead-end. Good puzzle. |
