Merton has a characteristic that greatly hinders his social life but does not harm him on the job market, even when he applies for a job in which socializing and making a good impression are important. How come? |

Is it a physical characteristic? Is there any job in the world that this characteristic would not be good for? Is it a personality characteristic? A type of autism? If I met Merton, would the feature be obvious? |

Does this characteristic hinder his social life in a way that is not related to his ability to interact with and make a good impression on people? Is he a misanthrope but able to hide it in professional situations? Is the characteristic a physical one? |

When you say it does not hinder him on the job market, is that in terms of getting jobs? Would he be equally good at actually performing such a job as someone without this characteristic? Is it relevant that interacting with friends is quite different to interactions in a professional environment (eg between employees, or between employee and client)? Could the characteristic be described as a personal preference for something? Is his nationality relevant? Ethnicity? Socio-economic status? His past? His upbringing? Would you realise that he had this characteristic from talking to him? From looking at him? From having an indepth conversation? Only if he chose to reveal it? Does it make people not want to be friends with him? Not want to do stuff with him? Does it make it hard for him to get out and socialise? Does it affect a specific aspect of his social life, or more generally? Is the fact that employers must provide equal opportunities employment relevant? |

Is the characteristic generally considered a negative one? Would he try and hide it in social situations? At work? Would it only come out after you'd known him a while? Or could you easily never know that he had the characteristic, but there would be other noticeable things about him that would be caused by him having it? Would his social situation be hindered in any social group? Or only among certain people? Is his health relevant? Something that he has done in the past? Is talking relevant? Are any crimes relevant? Is his family relevant? Could the characteristic be described as a particular opinion? The state of him having done something? Or not having done something? Do many people have this characteristic? Would anyone else with the characteristic experience the same problems, or is there something specific to Merton's case? Does the trait actively help him on the job market, or just not hinder him? |

Would people think he had committed a crime? Or that he was capable of one? Does he have the same name as a criminal? Look like one? Is he especially interested in crime? Or are people scared that they would not be able to commit a crime in front of him? That he would get them in trouble? Is he a police officer? OK, so does he have the same name as a famous criminal? A serial killer? Murderer? Thief? A war criminal? Is he related to a criminal? And people fear he may have inherited their criminality? And people think he is the same person? Or just have bad associations with him because of it? Was the relevant criminal ever caught? And this wouldn't affect him at work, because employers would know he isn't a criminal? Because they research him before hiring him? Because his CV shows he is not a criminal? Because a workplace couldn't not hire someone on the basis of his name? |

Merton Kendrick's name is on a sex offender registry, which lists him as a child molester!! In case you're thinking you'll save your sympathy for his victims, he hasn't got any, which is more than can be said for another (unrelated) Merton Kendrick who lives in the same city. Our MK has an official letter on police stationery saying he is not the sex offender & encouraging readers to verify this with the police. So MK has no trouble getting a job, because he can produce this letter at interviews. But imagine having to do this upon meeting a prospect for romance or even friendship. It would sure put a damper on the relationship!! A new puzzle awaits you, thanks to Enjay's clever questions!! |

Just goes to show you how absurd the idea of a sex offender registry is! Why is one particular crime singled out? Why should I be informed of which of my neighbours was committed of a sex-related crime (which can really mean anything these days), but yet there is no such list of my neighbours that were convicted of robbery or perhaps manslaughter, which is _way_ more relevant to me? This world is getting to be a strange place... |

I remember at one poin, a convicted child molester was living in our neighborhood. So, he had to go around to every house, saying that he was a sex offender. I was about 13, and home alone when he came to my house. He didn't do anything illegal, but the fact that he was there when I was home alone is just plain creepy. Tell my how this is a smart idea? |
