They were the luckiest people in the world. But just after telling their secret, their luck ran out. |

"They" did not invent something (so far as I know, anyway). Many other people have invented things, but invention is irrelevant. |

Are they lucky because they beat the odds somehow? Like in a contest or game? Before telling their secret, are they happy? healthy? rich? romantically fortunate? successful in some endeavor? Is this a true story? All "they"s and "their"s refer to the same people? All adults? all male? all female? From the same family? Any fictional characters? Amount of lucky people: Less than 5? 5 to 10? 10 to 50? 50 to 100? 100 to 1000? More than one thousand? |

Are they lucky because they beat the odds somehow? Yes Like in a contest or game? But no Before telling their secret, are they happy? healthy? rich? Yes, judging from the little I saw of them romantically fortunate? DOYD of 'romantically fortunate' successful in some endeavor? DOYD of 'some endeavor' Is this a true story? Argh...I can't remember, but I got it from another source, I didn't make it up. It's probably fiction. All "they"s and "their"s refer to the same people?Yes All adults? Yes all male? all female? The lucky people are a married couple. They have two friends. From the same family? Any fictional characters? Only if the story is fiction Amount of lucky people: Less than 5?this 5 to 10? 10 to 50? 50 to 100? 100 to 1000? More than one thousand? Although there were a number of other people who *were* lucky (and unlucky) in the incident that day whose names and genders do not matter, that probably number in the hundreds. |

Did the first incident make world news? The second? both were world famous. The first incident was definitely an "international incident" and act of war. The second one was probably more along the lines of an accident, albeit a horrific one. |

Given what we know so far of this story, was the problem concerning their wedding rings? Did they lose them? It concerned their wedding rings, yes...GOOD question! They did not lose them, no...in fact judging by the situation I would call that impossible... Also, recap please? A couple who had been married for about 20 years (a little more than that, I think) were dining with friends of theirs, taking a trip together. The married couple (I think the friends were also a married couple, but irrelevant - let's just call them the married couple and the friends - the married couple were extremely lucky, for a mishap that involved their wedding rings caused them to miss their honeymoon cruise on the Lusitania. As we all (?) know, the Lusitania sank after being fired on in WW1 by U-boats. The lucky, happy couple missed the boat and so their lives were spared. However, shortly after divulging their 20(ish) year old secret to their friends, ANOTHER disaster occurred, an accident in which they and many others forfeited their lives. This story is a fabrication of someone else's making (FSEI), from a TV show, although both disasters were very real events. |

Did the friends miss the Lusitania cruise as well? I am not sure they even knew the lucky couple had intended to be on it. For all I know, they weren't even friends yet at that point. Did they die in the second disaster? Presumably, though this is not certain. I expect at least one of them survived to tell the story (at least, if we take it in the context of a true story, though it was in fact fiction) Would the couple have died had they not disclosed their secret? Who knows? There were some survivors of the disaster, though the source strongly implied these two were not among them. Perhaps the universe was having a poorly thought out joke on them. *haz a sad* Anyway, the fact that they told their secret had no bearing on the disaster happening. |

You mention a joke- was it funny in some way? I would say there is an element of irony to the fact that they escaped the first disaster only to die in the second... Perhaps because the first disaster was worse than the first? Similar to the first? Related to war? Hmm, well the first disaster was a deliberate attack on a ship, resulting in the deaths of many innocent people. The second was an accident (so far as anyone knows) on a vessel of some kind as yet undiscovered by the puzzlers. It was not related to war (again, so far as anyone can prove, though I'm sure conspiracy theorists could go crazy on this) |

Puzzelly wuzzelly Balin (the kitteh) has a RECAP requested (*unfreezez matt'z brayn*) With recat upcoming, Matt Indubitably Shall (I hope) have no more Cause to refrain. Recap: In the early 20th century, a newlywed couple encountered a problem with their wedding rings which caused them to miss their honeymoon cruise on the Lusitania, days before it was gunned down by German U-boats. Some 20 years later, or thereabouts, they finally told this story to their best friends as the four of them undertook another voyage, this time on an airship. Their friends hailed them as the luckiest people in the world - minutes before their luck ran out. For this was the Hindenburg, and as we (all?) know, its voyage was doomed. All that remains is where I heard this story. The two disasters are real, but the story itself is said to be fiction, though not made up by me... |

This would also be helpful -how it occurred? this would not, for it could only be considered an (for lack of a better term) "Act of God" -how it was resolved, if it was resolved? yes |

Is the wedding ring event something that required immediate taking care of? To resolve the situation did they need a jeweller? A medic? Did the rings shrink? Did their fingers thicken? Did they intentionally keep this a secret? Does it involve anything embarrassing about them? |

Is the wedding ring event something that required immediate taking care of? Yes To resolve the situation did they need a jeweller? A medic? Jeweller Did the rings shrink? Did their fingers thicken? Possibly either, but that's not the only issue the rings had... Did they intentionally keep this a secret? if you mean the ring issue, yes. Were you inquiring about anything else? Does it involve anything embarrassing about them? The ring issue, possibly, DYOD. Other than that, no. |

Kaylee, I've been reading here for a few days before I dared to jump back in - and I was certain that you were talking about the most recent novel by Connie Willis! But you've given us a great story. I mean, it's done, right? (Kayleetonks, I haven't appeared here in a year, but as a reminder, I wrote a puzzle about a special trait which domestic cats have that other animals don't. It was posted as "Pets: Threat or Menace?" My second one started a conversation about Don Sobol, author of "Encyc. Brown.") I'm so glad to see you're still here, honey! Hey, Kaylee - just you and me then? looks like it but Fiona kitteh has popped in below! so their wedding rings became inextricably caught up and they had to be separated by a jeweller, which meant that they missed being drowned on the Lusitania? well "fused" is the word I wanted, but inextricably caught up is good enough =D and yes!! and 20 years later - were they involved in the Hindenburg disaster? yes yes yes!!!! almost there, then...now all you need is where I got the story. Fiona: Kaylee, I've been reading here for a few days before I dared to jump back in - and I was certain that you were talking about the most recent novel by Connie Willis! Nope! It's a TV show's episode, as I said earlier =) But tell me more about this novel, sounds intriguing! But you've given us a great story. I mean, it's done, right? all you need to do now is tell me the TV show...and episode (Kayleetonks, I haven't appeared here in a year, but as a reminder, I wrote a puzzle about a special trait which domestic cats have that other animals don't. Is the TV show: a show about disasters? History? War? I believe it's had bits of all these mentioned, though it's not exactly 'about' any of them. A drama? It certainly has a dramatic theme Soap opera? NoIs it about WWII? At least one of the stories has mentioned it Are there Nazis in it? I think there may have been in one or two stories |

Is it sci-fi? Not exactly - it has elements of the supernatural on occasion, but I don't know if sci-fi is the right word. But close.Does it have elements of a documentary? Hmm, sort of, although I don't think that's exactly what it is either Do we need to find the common element? That might help you find...The name of the TV show? YesThe episode? Yes(I don't watch a lot of TV shows)Nor I, but Ciaobella pointed this one out to me on YouTube. Googlepedia is your friend. Something else? I think the name of the show and its episode will just about do it |

Ok - the rest is just details, and I shouldn't be picky. Thanks to Noel and Peter for input in the Chatroom. I've decided to spoyle this one. =) The show is called "Beyond Belief" and it's a TV show that I apparently missed when it was actually on TV - I've found episodes on YouTube. It consists of a host who introduces several short stories - about three or four - per episode of odd happenings, usually with an aura of the supernatural about them. Some of them are "true" (but with significant details edited to protect privacy), others are made up by the show's writers, or else drawn from urban legends, and at the end of the episode, the host will tell you which is which. In one episode, in which the uniting concept, I believe, was strange modes of transportation (it's been so long since I've seen it now, perhaps Ciaobella can chime in), the section opened with a couple and their two friends on some sort of voyage, telling the story of how they had missed the Lusitania on their honeymoon, which saved their lives. They had been keeping the secret of their good luck - their wedding rings had randomly fused together, so they couldn't get them off or get out of bed and so were too late to catch the ship - for several years, fearing no one would believe them. Finally, a couple decades later as they celebrated with their friends, they were persuaded to tell their story, and as they finished up they went to the window of the ship...the *window* of the *ship?* Suddenly, watching that, a suspicion formed in my mind, when realisation slammed into my head that it was not a *ship* ship, but an *airship*. An airship drifting over New Jersey... Then they cut to what seems to be real, historical footage of the incident from the ground. Yes, they were lucky indeed to miss the Lusitania. But it seems their luck ran out, when the couple went on the Hindenburg. As I recall, this story was "beyond belief" - i.e. false. But both fateful voyages DID happen, so who knows...O.o Thanks everyone for playing, and sorry for being so...I don't know, stubborn about details? Really, look for Beyond Belief, I think you guys might like it. Prime puzzle material! Kaylee |
