9/11 led to a genuinely funny joke about the lunar calendar. The joke is truly innocuous; it does not trivialize the bombing or ridicule Islam. What is it?

By 9/11, do you mean it in its usual sense referring to the terrorist attacks on september 11th 2001?

Is anything about Islam relevant?
Is the date itself relevant? The fact that it was in September? The fact that it was the 11th?
Are the actual events of the tragedy relevant to the joke?

9/11 As in September 11, 2001, the date of the Al Queda attacks on the US? Are these attacks relevant to the puzzle?

Is September 11 in some different year relevant?

Is the 9th of November relevant?

The US emergency # 911 relevant?

The numerical result of 9 divided by 11?

By lunar calendar do you mean a description of what phase the moon is in at a given Universal Time? Right Acenssion or Declination relevant?
Conjunctions relevant? Eclipses relevant?

If I were to run some software to see where the moon was on 11 Sept 2001 around 9am, would I possibly get a clue for this puzzle?

Blue moon relevant? Harvest moon relevant?

Are any specifics about our satellite Luna relevant at all? Is this joke a pun?

I hope there isn't a "ground zero" reference in here - it is incomprehensible to me first, people would make a comparison between destroying a couple of skyscrapers and unfortunately the people inside, and levelling a good portion of a city and killing sevpI know the English language is evolving all the time but I always thought that ground zero only pertained to explosions released above ground - and ground zero is (for low altitudes) was the point at which a line drawn from the center of the explosion, through the center of the earth, intersects with the local horizon - In otherwords, simply it is the point on the ground directly below where the bomb explodes. The problem here, is that there was no bomb. Some planes simply flew into some buildings. They were already at the ground! So the term ground zero makes no sense in this case!

11-09-2001?
11 September?
The Moon?
The sun?
Flying?
Season changes?
Cost of flying in September?
Crashing prices of flights between now and Thanksgiving?

Did the joke come about/become funny because of the high levels of interest and awareness of Islam that happened after 9/11? Including increased awareness of their calendar? So the joke wouldn't have worked before then because so many people knew nothing about the Islamic lunar calendar?

So my clues so far are Moon, Calendar, Sort-of Ethnic Joke maybe Political Commentary.

Rather than ethnic... does the joke reference "New Yorkers"? Or the city of New York?

Fozzi is a character on Jim Henson's Muppets. An example of his joke would be...
Fozzi: What's the difference between an Orange?

The religion... Christianity? Islam? Judaism? Other?
Specific denomination within said category?

You said the lunar calendar was relevant... the Hijri Calendar? Relevant that 2001 was their year 1422? "The year of the order of fighting"? Relevant that if the bombers could have been delayed one more week, fighting would have been forbidden? (Month of Rajeb)

Ugh.. The only one I've ever read...
5759 Year according to Jewish calendar.
4696 Year according to Chinese calendar.
So what did Jews eat on Sunday for the first 1063 years?

Does it have anything to do with Rosh Hashanah and Ramadan coinciding only every 33 years? Anything to do with the Jewish propensity for adjusting their calendar (i.e. adding a month every so often)? Anything to do with the Muslim tradition of strictly obeying the moon, regardless of when their holidays fall?

Jeremy Greenberg: Jewish born comedian who converted to Islam just to see what all the fuss was about. Also married a Christian woman. He has twin 3-year-old sons, who he refers to as terrorists or the mafia... "Oh! Did you like that lamp? *crash* Cheerios every morning or the vase gets it! We know where you live!" He travels the country explaining how funnily similar the two religions are, plus some quirky differences.

Is the advice used for anyone who disagrees? yes Or specifically for Jews and Muslims? it's especially common in ethnic/religious/political contexts

Anything like "in a year's time you'll have forgotten why you were ever disagreeing in the first place"? no

Does the joke revolve around the fact that Jews and Muslims would find it hard to take the advice, because they have lunar calendars? Because taking the advice would require them to do something at the same time? Because the advice mentions a specific date-related term? Because it mentions the sun?

Does the advice suggest a way for people who disagree to get on? Does it recommend they talk to each other? Do something together? Realise they are not so different after all? Unite for a common cause?

Probably the only good result of 9/11 was the emergence of some very funny Jewish-Muslim comedy groups. One included the following routine: Jew or Muslim,"We should focus on our commonalities instead of our differences." Member of the other religion, "Let's hear it for the lunar calendar!" I think of that whenever I hear treacle about finding common ground. Please think of checking out my new puzzle at the bottom of the page.
