We had an intern at my workplace. There was something I ( = yours truly Doriana kitteh) wanted to know about him, but for a very specific reason I decided not ask him. What did I want to know and what's the reason? |

hmmm...*ponders what non-work related questions you would be able to ask Martin but why you might not want to* (It doesn't help that here in the US, things might be more strict on that point, and what you might not consider rude our workplaces might, since PC-ness has gone mad here LOL.) |

Hmm, ok I seem to have not posted my questions - let's try again (I think I forgot to hit the post button) Did you hire your intern? Is not asking the question yourself purely for your own benefit? Would the intern have a different reaction if you had asked the question yourself, instead of asking someone else to ask for you? Indeed, would it have been possible to ask someone else to pose the question and relay the answer back to you? If so, would this satisfy you? Were you trying to find out if you had met this intern before? Did you decide that there was a better way to find the information you wanted, that did not involve asking the intern directly? |

Is the surname typical for the region you are from? Was there a famous person with this surname in your home town in the 1920s? and you wonder whether your intern might be a grandson of this man? Is your intern from a completely different region? Africa? America? (which would suggest that his grandfather emigrated at some point) Would you be happy? unhappy? neutral? if your intern was indeed a grandson of .. ? Do you hesitate to ask him because you do not want to disappoint him (or yourself?) in the case he is not? Are you afraid he would be unlucky if he finds out that he is indeed the grandson of ..? Did the possible famous person he possibly is the grandson of have some bad points in his life? (eg. he was a criminal, or a nazi official?) |

Yes, I found a better way Is the surname typical for the region you are from? no Was there a famous person with this surname in your home town in the 1920s? no - remember that the intern is still in his teens and his grandparents were probably not even born then. But there are no famous people involved at all and you wonder whether your intern might be a grandson of this man? no, but... Is your intern from a completely different region? Africa? America? (which would suggest that his grandfather emigrated at some point) no, he's from the city we work in Would you be happy? unhappy? neutral? if your intern was indeed a grandson of .. ? neutral. It'd just satisfy my curiosity Do you hesitate to ask him because you do not want to disappoint him (or yourself?) in the case he is not? no Are you afraid he would be unlucky if he finds out that he is indeed the grandson of ..? no - he would know it if he was Did the possible famous person he possibly is the grandson of have some bad points in his life? no (eg. he was a criminal, or a nazi official?) Is XY a relative of you? no or a relative of one of your friends? no Is he a person you know, or have heard of, at any rate? I know him. See next answers A person that is or was related to the company you are working for? yes The founder or previous owner of the company? No, but he's the vice president. Good q's! Is XY still alive? yes Did XY live in the same town? in the same street? in the same house? you are living in? in the same town Was your intern actually XY's grandson? yes, but irrel Did the way you found out the information you wanted involve talking to other people? yes, but it's irrelevant how I found it out in the end doing research about other people? about XY's children? no to both Do you know XY's children, or some of them? no Did your job help you to find out what you wanted to know? Well, I just asked a co-worker of mine about it was the alternative to peek at his personnel records? look for a strawberry birthmark? ask someone else outside of work? google him? use a computer in any way? casually leave a photo of the grandfather lying around the office to see whether he noticed it and recognised him? nice ideas, but no. I just asked a co-worker. We have established that I our intern shares his last name with the vice president of our company, a gentleman in his 70s. I wanted to know whether Martin is his grandson (or related to him in any other way). What was my unique reason not to ask him? |

Did your unique reason have something to do with your position in the company? Rules of the company? Ethics? Is your work relationship with the Vice President different in some way than that of the other employees? Did he speak a different language and would not have understood the question? Is there some other reason that your were physically unable to ask the question yourself? Were you concerned that someone else might find out that you asked the question yourself? Ah, ok, so the intern would have some feeling about it. But, based on one of your previous answers , he would probably have the same reaction regardless of who asked him the question. hmmm.... His feeling about it, which we now know would be the same regardless of who asked, would if have been associated with you, regardless of who asked (even if it were you)? Or would it have been a feeling associated with the person that was asking him the question (again, even if it were you)? This feeling: Offended? Surprised? |

Does he try to constantly "hide" the fact that he is related to the vicepresident (in order not to stir animosity around the co-workers, for example)? Have you been hired in the same time with him? If so, did you have a relevant conversation? Or maybe when hired (or in another relevant occasion) you wanted to speak with the VP and ended up with him? (to the surprise of both?) Is it relevant if you would have asked the question in private or in public (with at least one other person present, that's it)? |

does this other person share your name? the vice presidents name? is he or she another coworker? would the intern be annoyed that just because he has the same name people assume hes related? has he asked you if you're related to this other person? does he think you are? |

does this other person share your name? yes the vice presidents name? is he or she another coworker? would the intern be annoyed that just because he has the same name people assume hes related? probably has he asked you if you're related to this other person? does he think you are? all unanswered questions are a no, and I think it's time for the ********SPOILER******** My company's president and I share the same last name and people often ask me if I'm her daughter (funnily enough, her daughter's first name is actually very similar to mine!). I find that annoying and even offensive because to me it sounds like they assume I only got the job because I'm related to the president. Some weeks ago, we had an intern who shares his last name with our vice-president. Although I was really curious if he is his grandson, I decided not ask him - because I thought he might be offended by the question and I wanted to spare him the embarrassment. Thanks for playing, and don't forget to have a look at my new puzzle at the bottom of the page & my long-running puzzle "Twice the Price". |
