Does gunwathing have to do with the environment? With education? Does it happen outside? inside? Could it happen at a noneducational facility? |

does gunwathing involve saying something? this thinking something? doing something? going somewhere? no to rest does it involve not doing something? no Is gunwath some sort of acronym? yes Hello and welcome to the forum, by the way. This is a so-called neologistic puzzle where the setter makes up a word and the solvers have to guess its meaning. The neologism can be either an acronym or a completely random word - check out the neologistic catalogue at the top of the puzzle page for more examples! (Going utterly naked walking about through hedges?-that might be annoying to say the least!) Haha! Trying to picture that in my mind... But unfortunately that's not the answer. |

Are their comments "bad remarks" for your job? Or maybe they are asking questions totally unrelated to your job? Or something that can only be answered by a higher authority (e.g., the mayor's office), thus wasting your time? Do they want something to be physicaly demonstrated? By the staff? I am sorry if the questions above seem stupid, I don't know what such a center does |

But I think it's a no Or maybe they are asking questions totally unrelated to your job? they do that all the time, but that's not it Or something that can only be answered by a higher authority (e.g., the mayor's office), thus wasting your time? no Do they want something to be physicaly demonstrated? By the staff? no I am sorry if the questions above seem stupid, I don't know what such a center does They're not stupid, but I'll briefly explain it for all of you. We teach people - usually but not only childen - about nature, environmental issues and climate change. Our visitors are school groups on field trips, youth groups or families who book guided tours or explore our grounds and museum by themselves. |

Does this happen only with children? With adults? it's more likely to happen with children, but it can also happen with adults So they gunwath to/with you, by saying something to you right? I wouldn't say they gunwath to me or with me, they just gunwath. Do you perceive gunwathing as rude/aggressive/impolite/just annoying? Mainly annoying because, HINT, people usually don't do it intentionally |

Counterproductive in the sense that: they stop you from work? They destroy something that needs further repairing? They walk on restricted areas, thus requiring you (or your colleagues)to call the police or ask the security staff to settle the matter? |

One word? {usually about two words} Can you tell they are gunwathing if you only hear (and not see) them? yes, but in the situation where gunwathing usually occurs, it is very unlikely that I hear but not see them. |

RECAP Gunwathing is a way to respond to a certain kind of question. You can gunwath intentionally, but most people do it accidentally, often because they lack specific knowledge. In my case, gunwathing annoys me because it works against my intention to teach people something. |

do they get the answer correct? no do they guess? yes do they misunderstand the question? no does their answer ruin what you are about to tell them? yes do you ask them the question and then give the answer if they don't know? yes do people generally know the answer? depends. Maybe I should add a clarification: I don't expect them to know the answer, I just want them to guess it. This is somewhat important not know it? depends as well make a guess? yes guess correctly? no guess based on false assumptions? no guess wildly wrongly? sometimes Ok, so we've determined that people are supposed to either know or guess the answer to a "How much?" question. How can guessing ruin what I am about to tell them? |

,is it because you want to wow them with some stupendous fact and if they guess wildly high it can ruin the impact of the true answer? Exactly! We have a winner! Time for the long-awaited ********SPOILER******** gunwath stands for "guess a number way too high. It occurs when you ask someone to guesstimate a number in order to cause a wow effect, but they guess a ridiculously high number and therefore ruin the surprise. (For example, I ask a group of children "How many kg of paper does a German use each year?" and they answer something like "A million kg!" because they haven't developed a concept of large quantities yet. But it can also happen with adults as my mum showed me lately. I asked her the same question and she gunwathed 5 tons. So I was like, "Mum you use more than 10 kg of paper a day?!") Gunwathing has a neologistic counterpart, coined by Peter365 a while ago: Hagtras (v): to guess an amount lower than the actual deal that someone is bragging about receiving. Thanks for playing and congrats to Enjay, Sundowner and especialy Shez for the final questions! |
