Ian (H/A/M) was offended by an article. Had the article been published a year earlier, he wouldn't have been offended. How come? |

An article: A piece of writing? In some journal? Newspaper? Blog? Encyclopedia? Or rather an article as merchandise? A part of speech? A section of a legal text? Is it relevant where Ian lives? If so: LTPF list of countries, please. |

Was it published in an academic journal? If so, relevant what discipline? Was Ian offended because the article contradicted his beliefs? Because it implied something bad about him? About a group that he belongs to? About something he feels strongly about? If the article had come out a year earlier, but Ian had only come across it now, would he still have been offended? Did he know the author? Relevant? |

Did Ian work in the same field? Did the article plagiarise him? Cite his work? Contradict his work? Was the article reporting the results of a study? Recommending a course of action? Was it an opinion piece? Should we find out more about the author? If the article had been published a year earlier, would Ian still have seen it? Did Ian do something relevant in the last year? Did the author of the article do something relevant? Did something change in Ian's circumstances? In the field of study in which the article was written? |

Has Ian written a relevant article himself? Is he involved in the same topic of study as the article? Was he offended by the methods described in the article? By the conclusions it drew? By its writing style? By its references to other works? By the fact that it was published at all? Did Ian feel that he had been slighted in some way by the publishing of the article? Had he had an article rejected for publication? Was the article peer-reviewed? Had Ian reviewed it? Had he seen the article before it was published? Is Ian a researcher? Member of staff at a university? Student? |

Had Ian done work on the topic before the publishing of the offending article? Did he feel that the article should have made reference to his work? That it should have taken into account his previous work? That he should have been invited to be involved in the study? Was Ian involved at all in the writing or publishing of the offending article? |

So...Ian wrote an article on a topic, and perhaps felt that he was something of an expert in it? Then some time later someone else wrote an article on the same subject, but failed to mention Ian's work? Which offended him because he thought he had made a valuable contribution to the field? A year ago, Ian's article hadn't been written yet so Ian wouldn't have felt that he should have been referenced. |

Great solve, Enjay! ********SPOILER******** Ian is a linguist who wrote and published an article on a certain grammar-related subject in 2003. In 2004, another linguist wrote an article on a related subject without mentioning or citing his work, and that's why Ian was offended. Had the article been published in 2003 or earlier, Ian's article couldn't have been cited and he wouldn't have been offended. (Based on a true story from one of my linguistics teachers, "Ian".} |
