I'm not huge on rulebreakers, but I ran a chess-themed one about a year ago that went over well, so here's another board game-themed rulebreaker. This time it's Clue(do)-themed. Unlike my chess one, there's no specific post that will end the game, but you do have to figure out the rules that determine WHO did it, WHERE, and with WHAT. Again, please do not guess the alphabet. And... go! |

I guess if this is a Clue themed puzzle, I should have said: What is your favorite color? Peacock. |

I'm breaking with tradition and playing a Rulebreaker which I usually avoid like the plague What's the frequency Kenneth? What's love got to do with it? Who are you? Why do I find it so easy to resist listening to music by The Temptations? If a White Peacock covered in Mustard and Plum sauce was eaten by the Scarlet Pimpernel would it make you Green with envy? Green? Plum? Peacock? White? Mustard? Scarlet? Dagger? Conservatory? |

Now I know why I don't play these I'm absolutely rubbish at them . Is the post number relevant at all? No; only the actual question is relevant. Colonel Mustard in the Kitchen with the Wrench Beans green and ham? Mr. Green in the Dining Room with the Knife Eggs green and ham? Mrs. Peacock in the Study with the Knife Green eggs and ham? Mrs. Peacock in the Billiard Room with the Wrench RECAP: -The rule has 3 parts: WHO, WHERE, and with WHAT. -Vowel counting is involved in one part. -Only the actual question is taken into account; punctuation, capitalization, etc. are irrelevant. -Any one-word questions, as a consequence of the WHAT rule, will be answered with the Wrench. -Word order is somewhat relevant to one part of the rule. |

You're getting very close to the answer. I will RECAP with HINTS about what parts of the clue involve what parts of the question: WHO: Involves vowel counting and... something else WHERE: Very loosely involves word order WITH WHAT: Involves two words (which is why one-word questions get the same weapon) |

I think the first part of the rule is: absolute value of n_vowels - n_consonants, wrapping around lengths of 6. Professor Plum corresponds to 0, 6, 12 etc. Still working on the other ones. Boat boat car? Boat boat truck? Boat car boat? Boat truck boat? |

I think the first part of the rule is: absolute value of n_vowels - n_consonants, wrapping around lengths of 6. Professor Plum corresponds to 0, 6, 12 etc. Correct. Here's how the WHO part of the rule works: Assign a number to each character, starting from the start of the game. Miss Scarlet is 1 (she goes first in a game of Clue), Col. Mustard is 2, and so on. Subtract number of vowels from number of consonants (or vice versa, whichever gives a positive number); if greater than 6, subtract until you get a number between 1-6. Use the character corresponding to that number. Still working on the other ones. HINT: The other ones also require assigning a number value to the rooms and weapons, in a certain order Boat boat car? Miss Scarlet in the Library with the Candlestick Boat boat truck? Mrs. White in the Hall with the Candlestick Boat car boat? Miss Scarlet in the Hall with the Candlestick Boat truck boat? Mrs. White in the Hall with the Candlestick |

Balin said I could spoil but a lot of good progress has been made here since I figured the rules so I'd prefer someone else finish it up rather than put that to waste. Clue: All three formulas look similar. Vene got WHO = abs(vowels - consonants) modulo 6 Hence why anagrams didn't affect that category... Note, abs() is the absolute function which makes the number positive; e.g. abs(4) = abs(-4) = |-4| = 4. It's been established that punctuation is ignored, so consider it as all being removed before the formulas are applied. What we're really dealing with here are strings of alphabetic characters and spaces... Try playing around with my two self-answering questions below and there are plenty of other answers above for confirming/eliminating ideas. Finally, negative answers are just as helpful as positive ones, so if you eliminate an idea let others know :) Mr. Green in the Study with the Lead Pipe? Mrs. Peacock in the Study with the Rope? |

Liquizt, I tried to avoid formalizing it like this, but I'm glad you did: the way you wrote it is exactly what I had in my notes! :-) I'll try to get back into this now... |

****SPOILER**** First, I assigned a number value to each character, room, and weapon. -Character: Starting from Miss Scarlet (who starts the game) and going clockwise around the board. So Scarlet = 1, Mustard = 2, etc. -Room: The same, starting with the Lounge (to Scarlet's left). So Lounge = 1, Dining Room = 2, etc. -Weapon: Alphabetical order. Candlestick = 1, Knife = 2, etc. Then, I calculated the who, what, & where by the following (vice versa when applicable, depending on which number was bigger): -WHO: number of consonants minus number of vowels, take the answer and get the character corresponding to that number. -WHERE: alphabetical value of last letter minus first letter. -WITH WHAT: number of letters in longest word minus number of letters in shortest word. For all of these, if the answer was greater than 6 (or 9 for "where") I subtracted 6 (or 9) until I got a number that worked. If the answer was 0 I took the last one on the list (this is why all 1-word questions were "Wrench" -- the longest and shortest words were the same, so the answer was always 0). I hope this makes sense. Nice work Liquizt, who solved it, and thanks to everyone who worked on it. |

Nice. I was definitely nowhere close to solving those, but it's a nice set of rules, nonetheless. |
