The truth about someone's secret? Something illegal? Embarassing? Does anybody tell a lie? Act in a misleading way? Hide the truth? Or is there rather a misunderstanding? Is there a single person trying to get the truth out? Two? Three? More? Do those trying to get the truth out act on behalf of an organisation? Maybe the police? |

So the police tries to find out the truth about something illegal. Something criminal? Did the police initially know an illegal act was committed? Or did they rather notice something unusual and choose to investigate? The big "NO" about someone telling a lie: Did someone simply tell the truth? And this sounded incredible? Sounded like a lie? Did somebody confess to a crime? |

Multiple murders - 2? 3? 4? 5? More? Did she commit all relevant murders? Did she kill her husband? Her child or children? Parents? Other relatives? Did she confess of the crime because she thought it was useless to deny it? Because she was proud to have done it? Because she thought she deserved to be punished? Because she was tired of life anyway so she didn't mind to be executed? Because of some consequences her confession would have for others? Because she hoped to be punished only lightly? |

Was there already evidence suggesting she was guilty before she confessed? Did the police know she had done it? If she had not confessed, would she have been found guilty? Did she confess as soon as the police started to question her? Did she confess to all 5 murders? Were the other murders grandparents? Siblings? Uncles? Aunts? Cousins? Did she know that she would be punished if she confessed? Was she mentally normal? Did she think she would gain something from confessing? Relevant how she will be punished? Jail? Execution? |

Is her age relevant? Under 18? Did she have any other siblings that she didn't murder? Or other close relatives? Was she living with the victims? And nobody else? Is it relevant how long after the fact she confessed? Did she feel better after commiting the murders? Did she expect to? Was she dying to get it off her chest? |

Controlling certain aspects of her life? Does she have a significant other? Did she have to kill all 5 of them to feel better? Was anybody else a suspect? Someone she cared about? |

Did the police contact her when she confessed, or the other way around? The latter; the police questioned her and she confessed immediately Did she confess before or during the actual murders? Soon after? After; how soon is not relevant, but assume it was fairly soon Was it a proud confession? A remorseful one? A scared one? I'd say more "matter-of-fact" |

Are we missing a relevant attribute about her such as her job? her hobbies? her physical health? her social circle? Is she famous? If someone else would have asked her instead of the police, would she also confess? Is the information in her confession relevant? Does she answer all possible questions about the case? Or could it just be "I did it"? |

Had she sworn to tell the truth? Was she a terrible liar? Had she been brought up never to tell lies? This one, pretty much. ****SPOILER**** Tom Lehrer, "The Irish Ballad" (hence the "folksong-y" in the title) About a maid I'll sing a song, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, About a maid I'll sing a song Who didn't have her family long. Not only did she do them wrong, She did ev'ryone of them in, them in, She did ev'ryone of them in. One morning in a fit of pique, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, One morning in a fit of pique, She drowned her father in the creek. The water tasted bad for a week, And we had to make do with gin, with gin, We had to make do with gin. Her mother she could never stand, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, Her mother she cold never stand, And so a cyanide soup she planned. The mother died with a spoon in her hand, And her face in a hideous grin, a grin, Her face in a hideous grin. She set her sister's hair on fire, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, She set her sister's hair on fire, And as the smoke and flame rose high'r, Danced around the funeral pyre, Playin' a violin, -olin, Playin' a violin. She weighted her brother down with stones, Rickety-tickety-tin, She weighted her brother down with stones, And sent him off to Davy Jones. All they ever found were some bones, And occasional pieces of skin, of skin, Occasional pieces of skin. One day when she had nothing to do, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, One day when she had nothing to do, She cut her baby brother in two, And served him up as an irish stew, And invited the neighbors in, -bors in, Invited the neighbors in. And when at last the police came by, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, And when at last the police came by, Her little pranks she did not deny, To do so she would have had to lie, And lying, she knew, was a sin, a sin, Lying, she knew, was a sin. My tragic tale, I won't prolong, Rickety-tickety-tin, My tragic tale I won't prolong, And if you do not enjoy the song, You've yourselves to blame if it's too long, You should never have let me begin, begin, You should never have let me begin. I know I'm not the only one who found it hilarious that a woman who'd just committed five murders believed lying was wrong. Nice work Enjay for the solve. Also nice work to Vene, Mimino (welcome back to the forum, both of you), Alhucema, Shez, Markobr, Solitaire, and a partridge in a pear tree. |

Interesting song, thank you. Although Tom Lehrer may be more than a "-y" away from folksong. As for the link: "Leider ist dieses Video, das Musik von UMG beinhaltet, in Deutschland nicht verfügbar, da die GEMA die Verlagsrechte hieran nicht eingeräumt hat." I wouldn'd go as far as to murder the people at GEMA for causing this deplorable result, but at least they deserve a good beating. |
