Did he think it was malfunctioning because of a scrund? That his father gave him?yes to both Intentionally? Yes or yesish Was the thing a machine? This. a part of the body? Scrud=explosive missile? That would be a Scud. A scrund is a long held misconception that has not been corrected, for whatever reason. The word was coined in a puzzle here, a year or two ago I think. |

Did his father also have the scrund? and told his son it as fact? Or did his father say something or act in some way in front of his son that his son mistook and hence developed the scrund for himself? Was it originally his father's car? inherited or otherwise passed down to the son? Does the scrund relate to some non-crucial part of the car? that exists in some cars but not all? that would usually be considered an add-on/extra? Is it a feature the son did not realise his car had? or believed was operated in a different way? or mistakenly believed his car did have? By 'heater' being close, is it correct to assume this feature is to do with some form of heating of the car? of its passenger space? seats? foot area(s)? engine? boot? windscreen(s)? |

Has cold weather anything to do with his scrund? No. So the needle of the temp gauge didn't move. Was it pointing towards "cold"? "hot"? The needle moved normally, gradually going from cold to the normal running temperature and stopping there. Because of his scrund, he thought this behavior was wrong. |

Did the son think the temp gauge was the fuel tank indicator? Or maybe a music volume indicator? No to both. |

Did he think it was supposed to measure the temperature inside the car's seating area? No. Hint: The answer is laterally connected to the pictogram. some more lateral questions will probably help more than direct guessing. |

Ok, was the scrund related to the red color? The blue color? The location of the color splotches? The image of the thermometer? The gauge needle? The wavy lines under the thermometer? |

The wavy lines under the thermometer? ...and this. No to the rest. did he think the themometer depicted represented something else? Yes. or that blue meant "up" and amber "down" because of their relative positions? No. In fact, the scale was vertical in the gauge in his car. |

So the son thought the temp gauge was something that actually his car wasn't equipped with? Is this "something" available in (other) cars? If so, is it an optional item? Is it expensive? Was he driving the car? If so, did he stop it? Did he fear it could blow up? Or that it could damage the car? |

It would be. Is it expensive? Probably not. Was he driving the car? Yes. If so, did he stop it? Did he fear it could blow up? Or that it could damage the car? No to all. |

The "Banana" is a skydiving airplane that has figured in some of my past puzzles. As far as I know, this thing is in all airplanes. |

is it the dooberry that measures the height above sea level and he thinks the wavy lines are the sea? SPOILER! Yes indeed. When he was a kid, his father joked that the temperature gauge measured height above sea level. As you can see, the pictogram could just as easily picture the sea and a height gauge. As an adult, he posted to a car forum asking what was wrong with the "altimeter" in his first car. After he posted a picture of it, they swiftly corrected his scrund. Thanks for playing, and to Shez for the solve, well done. |
