Lisa and Julia knew something was wrong. Lisa felt relieved, and later got worried. Julia felt puzzled, and later got angry. And because Julia was so stubborn, Lisa is now relieved. I've been away for a loooong time. I hope the situation on this puzzle hasn't been posted before. |

RECAP + HINT Roger was a small child and had a genetic disease, but no one knew until then. One day, his mother Lisa realized something was wrong with him. She felt relieved, but minutes later got worried. Decades later, Roger was a grown man. One day he and Julia met face to face. She realized something was wrong with him, felt puzzled, and days later got very angry. Because Julia was so stubborn, Roger's mum is now relieved. And because of Roger's disease, thousands of lives were saved. |

Roger got a genetic disease, but his mother Lisa did not know about it. Once something happened and Roger needed to be taken to hospital, but it was not because of the disease. Correct? Could Roger be easily cured of what caused him to be hospitalized? If yes, is this when Lisa felt relieved? Did they discover the genetic disease in the hospital? If yes, is this when Lisa felt puzzled? Years later, Roger and Julia, who is military, met while doing their jobs. Julia knew instantly that something was wrong with Roger. Correct? Is it when she felt puzzled? Then she got angry, mostly to herself, because she thought she should have recognized Roger's condition. Correct? Then Julia was stubborn, what finally caused relief to Lisa. Is Lisa relieved because Roger benefits from his disease? Did Roger do his job wrong because of the disease? |

Has Roger been tortured? YES And was able to resist tortures longer? YES when Roger was young did he burn himself? Assume yes was Julia a medic? No intelligence officer? YES I think we have enough for a... ************SPOILER****************************** Roger was born with a very rare genetic disease, called "Congenital insensitivity to pain". People with this disease are not able to feel any kind of pain. No one in his family knew about his condition. One day, when he was still a small child, boiling water fell from a mug over his arm and caused 2nd degree burns. His mother saw it happen and was puzzled to see that her son didn't even cry: he acted as if nothing had happened. She took him immediately to the hospital. Some hours later, the doctor came and told her that, after performing some clinical tests, he was almost certain that Roger had some sort of congenital insensitivity to pain. Lisa felt relieved, because she thought he would have a wonderful life (after all, wouldn't it be nice to live without feeling pain?). But the doctor explained her it was in fact the opposite: he could get injured and not take notice of it, he could have some health emergency (such as appendicitis) and never notice it until it was too late, etc. From that day on, Roger would have to be very cautious to everything he did, and check often if he didn't get injured. Decades later, Roger was now a spy. He was on a mission in enemy territory when he was caught and taken to interrogation. Julia, an intelligence officer of the enemy, was the one in charge of the interrogation. She was openly sadist, and also very stubborn: she thought her interrogation methods (which caused pain) often gave better results than other methods (e.g. suffocation, waterboarding, sleep deprivation etc). She spent several hours and a few days applying painful methods of torture, and thought there was something wrong with Roger's responses to pain. Sometimes, his screams would not correspond exactly with the time she applied the method. But she couldn't determine exactly what was going wrong. Eventually, Roger got rescued and Julia never got the answer she needed. Julia finally learned about that rare disease and couldn't forgive herself for not realizing it earlier. Because of her stubborness (in applying only painful methods of torture), Roger could stand much longer than normal people and didn't say anything that could compromise his country. And Lisa, now an old lady, is now relieved for having his son back home. Congratulations to all of you who participated in this puzzle! |
