I hurt my back quite badly in a fall just after Christmas. (Bottom three stairs, not ice or anything). Anyways, I found there is one cheap little item that was invaluable to me. We had several in the house already but never before had I realised its benefits. What is it? |

Did you have the item in your possession in the moment of the fall? Did it prevent a bigger misfortune (such as a bigger injury)? Is it made primarily of plastic? Metal? Rubber? Wood?Fabric? Is it used on a daily basis (say, like a tootbrush)? Relevant why you fell? (in the sense of lack of attention / hurry vs some defect in the stairway). The cheap little item - an animal? (Had to ask :-) |

Were you incapacitated after the fall? Unable to move around as much as usual? Unable to work? Did the item help you accomplish some task which was more difficult due to your injury? Help keep you entertained? Was it useful to you immediately after the fall (ie when you were lying on the floor)? For a short period after? Until your back healed? Until it healed a certain amount? Did you go the hospital/doctors? Relevant? Is any treatment that you took relevant? |

RECAPITTY BAPPITTY WAPPITTY to kickstart the week I hurt my back badly and couldn't move easily but this commonplace plastic item helped me obtain something without relying on others to help me. It didn't solve every problem but I found it a godsend for what I needed it for. Just for the record I doubt if there is anyone reading this who has not used such an item at some point in their life. |

Good morning Lynne, Is the item usually found in a particular room of a house? If i had to get one now would it be fairly easy to obtain? Is coping with pain relevant? Does the thing actually help you lift or grab something else that you need? Does the item help you do something without having to stand up? has it a long reach? |

*********** SPOILER ********** When I hurt my back I managed to crawl to the settee and although I could eat OK, drinking meant sitting up which was impossible at the time. Later on I found that when I lay in bed on my back I couldn't just sit up and drink from my glass. In both cases I quickly found out that a bendy straw was perfect. I know that sports bottles could have been used, but they're still not ideal when flat on your back as the liquid can rush in your mouth and you end up coughing painfully. In bed I could reach out for the glass, carefully put it between my arm and body at armpit level, bend the straw towards me, and drink at my own pace. Being dry mouthed was a problem, but a simple bendy straw (a packet of them had been in our kitchen drawer for years) meant that I had a degree of independence. Thank you one and all, and especially Redwine and Liquizt for rounding it off. Oh, and reading from a Kindle (I use the app on my phone as I like the backlight) is also easier than a cumbersome book when you are incapacitated. |

Nice one Lynne, I bought my good lady one of those Kindle covers with the light on it . She loves it but its always in the corner of my eye when we're reading in bed together. It gives off quite a glare. |

I had a Sony ereader with one of those bendy lights but I didn't like it much and gave it to a friend. I don't want a Kindle for that reason. With the app on the phone you can alter it to white text on a black background which gives off less glare in the dark. You can also dim and brighten the light. There's a choice of sepia background as well if black on white is too stark. I've just finished knitting an afghan/blanket and am doing yards of simple stitch for the border. I use the Kindle program on my computer and can knit and read at the same time, just like when watching TV. Finally, what puts me off a Kindle is that I like a small bag when I'm out and about and it wouldn't fit in it. (I don't suppose you hear many women saying that!) |

Ah, but I bet your wife is quietly buying new books while in her jimjams at midnight! I love the plethora of cheap and even free books that are available and being able to carry 350 books around with me at any one time. I still like regular books for non-fiction books especially if they're well-illustrated. I liken my phone to a chatelaine - the sort that were like Swiss Army penknifes to the Victorian lady. I have my music, my books, my photos, my camera, my maps (interactive A-Z of London, follows you with GPS), my map of the night sky which is always up to date (GPS again), my pack of Patience cards, 50,000 radio stations, a torch, a magnifier, a teleidoscope, a calculator, a hearing aid, etc etc. Oh, and it's occasionally used as a phone. |
