I keep coming up with Ireland puzzles and promptly forgetting them, so here's a non-Ireland puzzle while I try to remember them.

A man read a letter and a divorce was prevented.

Did the couple actually plan to divorce? is the reason for divorce relevant? did the letter prove the reason being not true?
Does the couple have children? if so: are they relevant in the story?
Did any of the people involved write the letter?
Was the letter written quite a while before? (more than 1 year? more than 5 years? more than 10 years? more than 50 years?)
if so: did the man? did the couple know about the existence of the letter? about its content?
Was the letter fake?

My mistake! =)
If a divorce was prevented, does it mean the couple was having a bad time together and they were about to separate? Or simply that it prevented a bad situation (which would lead to a divorce) from happening?

Man's job/profession:
does it require a university degree? lawyer? physician? administrator? professor?

Was the man expecting to receive such a letter?
Did the man know the person who wrote and sent him the letter? This person H? A? M/F?

RECAP:

A man read a letter and a divorce was prevented.

The man is a writer, and receiving the letter prevented the divorce of two characters in one of his fantasy novels. The two characters were not a couple at the time the letter was received. A third character, a female, was also referenced in the letter and is relevant.

Is the man (may we call him John?) currently alive? Is he reasonably well-known?
Did he write this novel during the 21st century? 20th? 19th? Earlier?
Is the novel set in a particular time period? Is it part of a series?
The two characters (Robert and Heather perhaps?) are not together when he received the letter. Does this mean John had not finished writing his novel yet? Or had they been together, and were currently separated? Did something in the letter force him to rewrite his novel entirely?

Is the third character (may we refer to her as Edith?) related to Robert or Heather? Is she based on someone John knew in real life? Are Robert and Heather based on anyone John knew in real life?

One more RECAP for now:

John is a writer, and he received a fan letter that expressed expectations about certain future actions in the book. This prevented Robert and Heather, two characters in his series of fantasy novels, from divorcing. A third character, Edith, is also relevant.

And a couple of HINTS from established information:
#1: It is relevant that these are fantasy novels.
#2: Robert and Heather were not a couple in the series at the time the letter was received.

Did the prophecy foresee the marriage? The divorce? Or did it cause either by foreseeing something else? Was the divorce avoided by questioning the validity of the prophecy? Or of the prophet?

Did either profecy or curse say that someone must have get married? Both did. I think this is enough information for a clarification:

The prophecy said (paraphrasing) "Edith will marry Robert."
The curse was one which would kill Heather if she did not marry Robert.

Is it relevant that marry can also mean "perform the marriage ceremony"? Yep, and we have a winner.

****SPOILER****

From TV Tropes' page on "Ascended Fanon":

In Piers Anthony's Xanth series, Prince Dolph (who is still a child) manages to find himself engaged to two different women, both of whom have to marry him Because Destiny Says So; one, Nada Naga, because of a prophecy, and the other, Electra, because she's under a curse that will kill her if Dolph doesn't go through with the marriage. Obviously, he can't marry them both (though Dolph doesn't understand why not), and to make matters worse, although Dolph prefers Nada, she would much rather be Just Friends, while Electra really does love him (even if it's magically compelled). Piers Anthony's originally planned resolution, to occur in a later book in the series, was to have him marry Electra, divorce her one day later, and then marry Nada, who will get around the whole "not in love" thing by voluntarily drinking a Love Potion. However, a reader spotted a loophole in the prophecy to "marry" someone can also mean to perform their wedding ceremony. After reading this fan's letter, Piers Anthony quickly rewrote the ending, and Dolph and Electra lived Happily Ever After.

Nice work Doriana et al - haven't had a puzzle solved in a while.

"Nice work Doriana et al" - This sounds like I'm getting all the credit, but I actually only asked one question after you gave a huge hint. I don't really deserve it =D

I'm wondering how this was translated to other languages where there are two different words for the two meanings of "marry" (e.g. in German, it's heiraten and verheiraten...).
