Does it relate to the history of television? The technical aspects of how it works? How it is broadcast? TV channels? TV programmes? A specific TV programme? TV sets themselves? Live TV relevant? Advertising? TV in different countries relevant?

Does it relate to what TV was like at a particular point in history? The first thing ever broadcast? The inventor of TV?

If not exactly a specific TV programme - a televised event? Or is it just adverts that are relevant, rather than actual programmes?

Is what you thought was a metaphor still used today in the context of television? Only now it is indeed a metaphor (e.g. "Don't touch that dial!")?

Ah - they were originally created to sell soap, I believe? They were effectively soap adverts?

Ah - they were originally created to sell soap, I believe? That's correct & is related to my scrund. You're almost there!! They were effectively soap adverts? No, I didn't believe they were soap ads -- & in fact they weren't, any more than "Law & Order" is an ad for whoever sponsors it, although all these programs have commercial breaks, of course.

So was your scrund that 'soap opera' was a metaphor when in fact it refers to actual soap? Did you think the name had a different origin? Something to do with the fact they are usually based around domestic life?

******** SPOILER ***********

Once again, Enjay triumphs!! I used to think the term 'soap opera' was a figure of speech (because the programs were maudlin & "sudsy") but the actual origin is that the sponsors were soap manufacturers. Did you ever have than scrund? Whether or not you did, please check out my new puzzle.
