RECAP/HINT The older man has instructed the younger person who is a child/young teenager to clap at a particular time. The older man is reassured that all is OK when the boy claps. The older man's job is relevant, and no game is being played. There is no crime being committed and it's only the two of them who are relevant to the puzzle. It would be helpful to you to find out where they are and what they are doing which should lead to the purpose for the clapping. | ||

I've just had a great idea for a solution but it's a tad naughty so I'll apologise in advance.... Is Marty in bed and Tom, his guardian, is quite puritanical and Marty's clapping is to indicate that his hands are where they should be and that he's not erm erm....shall we say 'getting to know himself!' Another theory, Marty is meant to be fasting and he is clapping to show he's not eating, but I suppose that doesn't explain why Tom can't just watch him not eating? Ok so this clapping is so that Tom doesn't have to actually go to where Marty is to establish that he's not doing what he's not supposed to be doing? Is Tom somwhere that he cannot get out of? As Muslims praying towards Mecca they are unlikely to be called that. But you made the incredible leap anyway. The book doesn't give the relationship between the man and boy, but they could easily be uncle and nephew. The uncle has agreed to take Marty on as a helper to help his brother out, but he knows his reputation as a scallywag and knows that his back will be turned every time he answers the call to prayer. Shopkeepers in souks sometimes just put a flimsy barrier across their stalls when they're praying and other less devout stall holders keep an eye on the stall. Tom has come up with the clever idea to get Marty to clap while he's praying. Thank you for sticking with it Peter! | ||

Clap your hands Feb 2010. The post count is much lower because it was quickly ascertained that it was 'belongings' that were safe. But then I spoiled far too quickly and didn't go for where they were etc. I always regretted not going for more of the story. Your leap to religion being relevant and praying to Mecca was inspired. | ||

Ha Ha I thought it would have been way back in '05 or '06. Had I been cheating I would never have looked in 2010. If you're interested the idea of religeon being relevant came to me when you said 's.v.v. of a room' i got thinking of an oldish man who could not see the boy and the image of a priest in a confessional box leapt into my mind. When you said that he couldn't be a priest it was an easy leap to him being a non christian and the rest just clicked into place. Thanks for the puzzle which had a great classic feel to it. | ||

I remember that puzzle from 2010! This was the same month Gourami and I were doing Radiohead inspired puzzle titles. Great puzzle then and now. :-) |
