This is a puzzle I ran once upon a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, so if it rings bells please email first. He knew all was OK when he heard clapping |

Clapping from recognition? Relief? Anticipation? none of those, I'm afraid. This situation is pretty unusual, but when I read about it I thought that it showed really clever thinking and I thought it to be utterly brilliant. It's not from my own imagination or anything. |

Relevant why the child was clapping? His relation to the child relevant? Which of these situations, if any, would let him know all was ok: Seeing the child? Seeing (but not hearing) the child clapping? Hearing the child make some other noise? Hearing the child saying something? Hearing someone else clapping? Hearing a noise made by someone else? Or a noise made by something else? Does he hear the child: in person? Over a phone? Radio? Baby monitor? TV? Is the distance between him and the child relevant? Relevant where: he is? The child is? Is the clapping a game? Part of a game? |

RECAP/HINT The older man has instructed the younger person who is a child/young teenager to clap at a particular time. The older man is reassured that all is OK when the boy claps. The older man's job is relevant, and no game is being played. There is no crime being committed and it's only the two of them who are relevant to the puzzle. It would be helpful to you to find out where they are and what they are doing which should lead to the purpose for the clapping. |

Are they in a place of work? A home? Are Tom & Marty in the same room ? Does Tom's work involve children? Is this a test of some kind? If Marty whistled would that have served whatever purpose is being served? Is the clap desinged to muffle the sound of something else? Is Marty being tested? is an expirement being conducted? Is the clapping sound made by trying to catch something? Can I call the child Marty and the man Tom? You could, but you have a FA here Is the FA that Marty is actually a teenager and not a child or have I missed something? |

You could, but you have a FA here Is the FA that Marty is actually a teenager and not a child or have I missed something? no, I changed it to young teenager as a child wouldn't likely be in this situation and an older teenager wouldn't be called a child. The FA is something else entirely but would be a clue to the whole situation |

Now I'm completely baffled..... Tom has asked Marty to clap, Tom is a living adult human male? It is Tom that knows things are ok while he hears Marty clapping. Marty is a teenage boy. Is the FA included in the above ? Is Tom a teacher? a priest or minister? Is it a confessional? It's maddening knowing that the solution is hiding somewhere in the solved puzzles folder. |

I've just had a great idea for a solution but it's a tad naughty so I'll apologise in advance.... Is Marty in bed and Tom, his guardian, is quite puritanical and Marty's clapping is to indicate that his hands are where they should be and that he's not erm erm....shall we say 'getting to know himself!' Sorry Lynne I'm sure you're too much of a lady for that to be the solution and I'm blushing even typing it. But nothing ventured..... |

Ok then working on that basis would clicking his fingers work just as well ? or playing a piano? in short is Marty clapping to show that he's not doing something else? Another theory, Marty is meant to be fasting and he is clapping to show he's not eating, but I suppose that doesn't explain why Tom can't just watch him not eating? Ok so this clapping is so that Tom doesn't have to actually go to where Marty is to establish that he's not doing what he's not supposed to be doing? Is Tom somwhere that he cannot get out of? Is Tom disabled? Is he in a locked room and Marty is in an adjoining room? Is Marty a servant? |

Tom is praying so he can't look over his shoulder to see if Marty is not doing something with his hands that he shouldn't be doing, correct? totally and utterly correct! Is Marty teasing or mocking Tom in someway? no - it has already been found out that Tom instructed Marty to clap Should Marty also be praying? no Remember that they are at a place of work, Tom has instructed Marty to clap, and as a result Tom is reassured that all is OK when he hears the clapping Oh, and just for free, the FA was that they would be called Tom and Marty. As Muslims praying towards Mecca they are unlikely to be called that. But you made the incredible leap anyway. Also, Tom could be a teacher but in his religion he wouldn't be a 'priest' or a 'minister' So all that is left to be found is where were they and why did Tom instruct Marty to clap so that he is not doing something with his hands that he shouldn't be doing? |

LoLThat must be a first where naming someone in a puzzle created an FA. Just want to clarify . If Tom went to the toilet would he ask Marty to clap? Does Marty habitually do something with his hands that inhibits his ability to do his job? Is food preparation relevant? cleanliness? Biting nails? scratching? Is this an image thing? Does Tom have customers that call to his place of business? |

Does Marty serve customers? only when Tom is praying? Is it just that Tom is worried Marty would steal from him when his back is turned? But then , what would happen if he did have to go to the toilet or leave the shop for some reason? Does Tom only let Marty work in the shop(assumption) while he is praying? and the clapping is to make sure he is not putting stock or cash into his pockets? I'm thinking that maybe Tom is a jeweller or deals in small but valuable items? Not a very trusting man is our Tom or whatever his name or trade is. I hope this is right as I'm running out of ideas. |

Does Marty serve customers? yes only when Tom is praying? he also serves customers when Tom is not praying Is it just that Tom is worried Marty would steal from him when his back is turned? YES But then , what would happen if he did have to go to the toilet or leave the shop for some reason? The story doesn't go into details about other times when Tom might have to leave the stall Does Tom only let Marty work in the shop(assumption) while he is praying? Marty is Tom's helper and the clapping is to make sure he is not putting stock or cash into his pockets? correct I'm thinking that maybe Tom is a jeweller or deals in small but valuable items? not necessarily, he's only worried about his cash box Not a very trusting man is our Tom or whatever his name or trade is. family ties are very strong and he has taken on Marty as a helper but doesn't trust him not to have his fingers in the cash box when his back is turned I hope this is right as I'm running out of ideas. it's time for the spoiler *********** SPOILER ************** I read this in a book about someone renovating a house in Fez, Morocco. The book doesn't give the relationship between the man and boy, but they could easily be uncle and nephew. The uncle has agreed to take Marty on as a helper to help his brother out, but he knows his reputation as a scallywag and knows that his back will be turned every time he answers the call to prayer. Shopkeepers in souks sometimes just put a flimsy barrier across their stalls when they're praying and other less devout stall holders keep an eye on the stall. Tom has come up with the clever idea to get Marty to clap while he's praying. Thank you for sticking with it Peter! |

Clap your hands Feb 2010. The post count is much lower because it was quickly ascertained that it was 'belongings' that were safe. But then I spoiled far too quickly and didn't go for where they were etc. I always regretted not going for more of the story. Your leap to religion being relevant and praying to Mecca was inspired. |

Ha Ha I thought it would have been way back in '05 or '06. Had I been cheating I would never have looked in 2010. If you're interested the idea of religeon being relevant came to me when you said 's.v.v. of a room' i got thinking of an oldish man who could not see the boy and the image of a priest in a confessional box leapt into my mind. When you said that he couldn't be a priest it was an easy leap to him being a non christian and the rest just clicked into place. Thanks for the puzzle which had a great classic feel to it. |
