When Nerita told me about something she did at home, I assumed that she did it because her her husband was puritanical. But the opposite was true. How come?

Is her husband puritanical? Or the opposite (is there a word for that)? Religion relevant? People except Nerita and her husband relevant? Did you think she did it in the first place, because he was puritanical? Or did you think she stayed at home while doing it, because of that?

Wasting food relevant? Using leftovers? Eating a certain dish? A certain foodstuff? Avoiding a certain foodstuff?

Are any pets relevant?
Does Nerita prepare food for herself? For her husband? Does her husband prepare food for her? For himself? Relevant?

Storing food - keeping an ingredient? Keeping a meal? The leftovers of a meal? Making a large batch of food and keeping some for future meals?

Did you think he was puritanical in that he disapproved of certain eating habits? Had a certain eating habit? Did or didn't eat a certain food? Disliked spending much on food? Disliked lavish/indulgent food?

Did you think that Nerita was doing the thing to please her puritanical husband? That she was doing it because he opposed his puritanism (or whatever the word may be) on her? That she was herself puritanical?

Did she, in fact, do the thing precisely because her husband was non-puritanical?

Does he avoid the things: because they are bad for him? Because they ruin appetite? Because he thinks other things taste better? Does he always avoid them? Or at certain times? Does he indulge only at certain times? If so: because it tastes better when you don't get used to it? Because it has side effects?

Does she hide the sweets because her husband will be tempted to eat them if he sees them? yes Is she trying to protect him? yes To help him to not eat sweets? yes Is he trying to eat healthily?Yes -- he asked her to hide the sweets. If she tried to "help" him eat healthily when he didn't want to, I hope he'd tell her, "I'm not your child, I'm your husband, & if you want me to stay your husband, you'd better stop treating me like your child." To lose weight? possibly

***** SPOILER ************

When Nerita tells friends that she has to hide her stash of sweets from her husband, they assume he's a food Puritan who monitors her dietary intake, & they wonder why she stays with such a jerk. But in fact, her husband us like me in that he adores sweets & has no willpower. So he asks her to hide her sweets from him. I ask you to check out my new puzzle!!

Good one!
My girlfriend and stepkid both have sweet teeth (sweet tooths?), and I test my willpower against their bags of sweets.
I'm interested in the mechanisms of willpower and addiction, and have a personal principle not to get addicted to any substance, so I'm getting valuable training and experience from examining my own desires and actions. For instance, eating nothing is much, much easier than eating one and then stopping.

I don't call weak willpower an addiction. I'm interested in pursuing happiness, so I don't avoid enjoyable thing just because I find it hard to stop indulging myself once I've started. To each, his own.

Me neither. Addiction is when you feel crappy without your substance instead of feeling happy with it, and need it just to feel normal again. I just find it interesting, informative and occasionally fun to experiment on myself like this.

I don't think that's enough to call something an addiction. Are diabetics addicted to insulin? An anyone in pain may feel crappy without painkillers, not because he's addicted to them but because pain feels crappy.
