No, but bonus marks for an intriguing alternate solution that I totally should have thought of and didn't. =)

Hmm. Are you referring to a work of fiction? Hmm...Let us say I am speculating on a situation that would work in fiction but with current technology, it would not work. But the "I" is me. xD So this is FMOI.

I don't think I've ever had a puzzle dedicated to me before. Thanks! Welcome!

Have you ever been older than 2 1/2? In this context, no. Would this puzzle work if you had said another number? 7? 25? 5 1/2? 1? It would be impossible for me to be 25 in this context, barring new technology invented in this speculative situation. The other ages are possible, but I've only passed 1 so far =) The rest are a long way off O.o

there were possibilities of inherited conditions, but as it turns out, the condition she was born with and the one she developed later were not (as far as can be determined) hereditary.

I've only worked with service dogs in the past so forgive my ignorance.

Is the animal one found on Earth? If so:
-a cat? (because I know how much you love them)
-another mammal?
-a fish? (a neat trick that would be!)
-a bird?
-an insect?
-a reptile?
-an amphibian?
-a platypus? (hehe)

I've only worked with service dogs in the past so forgive my ignorance. that's ok, service dogs are way more common here. However, I figured dogs might not like space so much. xD

Is the animal one found on Earth? yes If so:
-a cat? (because I know how much you love them) yes!!

a penguin? a horse?
all the rest deserve to be the answer, but aren't. However, I'm sure they can all be found in some form or other on this colony. Especially penguins, just because. =)

Is the whole moon so cold? Callisto is a very cold moon indeed, being that it has a tenuous atmosphere at best, mostly carbon dioxide. No doubt the Callisto Colony is domed with some sort of oxygen-based atmosphere producing thing inside. However, penguins are not the important animal here - they're just there because I like them and I said so. Focus on the cats, please =)

xDD yuo can haz recat...silly kyeann kitteh.

In a hypothetical futuristic situation, "I" am two and a half (Jovian) years old. This is because I am, in real life, 27 and a half years old, which would be two and a half years on Jupiter, or in the Jovian system at least (Jupiter and its moons), since standing on Jupiter is rather unlikely. (Of course if we had a space station floating around Jupiter...but never mind. I digress.)

The colony where "I" live is on Callisto, and I live in a restricted environment, where I am permitted to interact with a select few "others", mostly humans, but one cheezburgur kitteh. (*aside to Tortiekitten* Take that, Tortiesibling - on Callisto, cats CAN haz cheezburgur. *Nods*)

So are we finding out why you're on Callisto? prenatal evaluation of "me" caused concern that I would be born with a certain condition. I was, but being on Callisto so they could study the effects/think of a way to cure it didn't stop me from developing another condition, for which I required a cheezburgur kitteh as a service animal Or have we figured that out, and we're looking for something else? hope that cleared things up rather than muddled them?

Is the other condition genetic? Rarely - not in 98% of cases, and not contagious. Permanent? yes, at least here - hard to say, on Callisto =) Incurable? it's treatable with therapy, but who knows, on Callisto... Bacterial? Viral? Parasitic? none of these, or possibly all of these, strictly speaking...there's no known sole cause, and sometimes it happens for no discernible reason at all Debilitating? yes Deadly? it's not a progressive disorder per se, but symptoms can worsen. Quality of life is generally positive for all but the most severe cases.

If the latter: The head? Neck? Torso? Arms? Legs? Feet? Hands? Any combination of the above? well, all of these are possible due to underlying causes - in her/my case, it is the right leg and foot which is most obviously affected.

Can we call the other condition Condition B?

Does Condition B tend to show up at a certain age? If so: 0-9? 10-19? 20-30? and etc.

If I were to see you in real life, and look at your right leg and foot, would I immediately know that you had Condition B?

Would I, a HTF living in the US of A, have probably come across Condition B?

Can we call the other condition Condition B? you may

Does Condition B tend to show up at a certain age? If so: 0-9? it first appears anywhere from in utero up to about age 3 10-19? 20-30? and etc.

If I were to see you in real life, and look at your right leg and foot, would I immediately know that you had Condition B? My posture might also give it away, but there's other conditions that could cause either deformity, so unless you're an expert in Condition B, you might not guess just by looking. Also, the fact I have epilepsy is also likely related to it.

Would I, a HTF living in the US of A, have probably come across Condition B? Quite likely. I have a very mild case - severe cases would present as much more obvious.

Is Condition B equally likely to appear in all parts of the body? Or are some parts of the body more likely to be affected than others?

Is your/her right leg/foot: Larger/smaller than normal? Shorter/longer than normal? Twisted (such as Kira's leg in Gathering Blue)? Deformed in some other way?

Saying a word a whole bunch of times makes it no longer seem to be a word. In my case, I typed 'the other condition' for each question, then went back and replaced it with 'Condition B', and so...yeah. Seriously, if you say any word a bunch of times, like, say, food, it doesn't sound like a word anymore, just a bunch of random sounds.

See, I just did that. Food is no longer a word to me. It will return to being a word in a little while.

I sry kyeann kitteh! I ansur kweshunz.

Is Condition B equally likely to appear in all parts of the body? with this phrasing, it's hard to decide. This condition, initially affecting the brain, covers a very broad category. But the most commonly seen type (80 percent) also affects the spine/spinal cord and, most noticeably, one or more of the extremities. Or are some parts of the body more likely to be affected than others? that depends on how the condition presents itself, but the most noticeable physical effect in most cases is likely to be reduced range of motion due to abnormalities in the extremities.

Is your/her right leg/foot: Larger/smaller this than normal? Shorter this/longer than normal? Twisted (such as Kira's leg in Gathering Blue)? Deformed in some other way? the Achilles tendon is noticeably shortened, and also, both feet are wider (though smaller) than normal.

Or are all the extremities equally likely to be affected? Remembering that "Condition B" is a "blanket term" of conditions, further divided into three groups, only the first (and most common, 90% of Condition B's cases) concerns us directly (let's call it B1) It is likely that two or more extremities will be affected simultaneously by Condition B1; of these, it is most common for both legs to be affected, at 70-80% of cases.

Also, is Googlepedia allowed? Yes

I should stop reading so many stories and case studies about disabled children. I'm slowly becoming an expert on everything from cerebral palsy to Down's syndrome to autism.

So... let me get this straight. Callisto Kaylee was born with cerebral palsy, right? Is there anything relevant about Callisto in connection with cerebral palsy, despite the changed gravity?
Callisto Kaylee also developed epilepsy, right?

Relevant what people Callisto Kaylee is allowed to interact with? *isn't* allowed to interact with?

So... let me get this straight. Callisto Kaylee was born with cerebral palsy, right? right Is there anything relevant about Callisto in connection with cerebral palsy, despite the changed gravity? well, the changed gravity probably made learning to walk an interesting process - I didn't learn to walk until I was about 3 in real life because of the cerebral palsy.
Callisto Kaylee also developed epilepsy, right? right

Relevant what people Callisto Kaylee is allowed to interact with? yes - her doctor, her nurse, and the cheezburgur kitteh, if you broadly define 'people' *isn't* allowed to interact with? her parents, her sister, the rest of her family. Also there's people she can't see or hear, though they can see and hear her all the time.

The reason that Callisto Kaylee isn't allowed to interact with her parents/family relevant? Or is just merely the fact that she is on Callisto and they are on Earth, many many miles away?

Aw, thanks Kaylee. I must admit I am very knowledgeable when it comes to the books I've read. I do enjoy reading. A lot :D
Those other people that 'she can't see or hear', are they relevant as well? If so, are they scientists? Doctors?
Is Callisto Kaylee's family seeing her on a TV screen? In real life (like through a one-way mirror)? Relevant?
Does Callisto Kaylee have access to teh inturwebz? Relevant? (Probably not, but I felt like asking xP)

Also, will Callisto Kaylee ever be able to see her family? If so, when she is: under 30 (so fairly soon?) 30-39? 40-49? 50-59? 60-69? 70-79? 80-89? 90-99? 100 or above? Relevant?
Of course, this is assuming her parents are still alive at those ages...here on Earth, that would be unlikely at ~80 and beyond, but on Callisto...

Aw, thanks Kaylee. I must admit I am very knowledgeable when it comes to the books I've read. I do enjoy reading. A lot :D reading is good for us kittehz =)
Those other people that 'she can't see or hear', are they relevant as well? Relevant-ish If so, are they scientists? Doctors? some may be, but not most of them.
Is Callisto Kaylee's family seeing her on a TV screen? sometimesIn real life (like through a one-way mirror)? at other, very occasional times Relevant? yes
Does Callisto Kaylee have access to teh inturwebz? Relevant? (Probably not, but I felt like asking xP) sadly, she has no access to teh inturwebz. She does not have very much access to anything, except teh cheezburgur kitteh and whatever her caretakers feel like giving her.

Also, will Callisto Kaylee ever be able to see her family? probably notIf so, when she is: under 30 (so fairly soon?) 30-39? 40-49? 50-59? 60-69? 70-79? 80-89? 90-99? 100 or above? Relevant?
Of course, this is assuming her parents are still alive at those ages...here on Earth, that would be unlikely at ~80 and beyond, but on Callisto...an interesting question. I take it you meant in Earth years, not Jovian ones, of course. But I don't know how much longer they'll live.

Is "nature vs. nurture" relevant? I.e. do they want to see how Callisto Kaylee developes if she is not influenced by her family?
sorriez for missin dis kweshun! Yes, that is relevant, but not their only or even main motive.

**RECAT/REFOCUS**

On the Callisto Colony, a 2 1/2 (Jovian) year old Kaylee (aka almost 28 in Earth years) has been carefully scrutinized from her development in her mother's womb on. (This is important.) When she was definitely showing signs of cerebral palsy, she became of even more interest to her mother's doctors and was taken from her parents to be raised by certain caretakers. She developed epilepsy at (Earth time) 9 months old, and was given a cheezburgur kitteh for company.

Callisto Kaylee's family (and others) can see her on a TV screen, and through one-way mirrored glass when they are actually where she is, but she never sees anyone but her doctors and caretakers - and, of course, teh cheezburgur kitteh.

Where is she?

Why is she being kept there, other than "research"?

Who are her caretakers?

What importance does she have to them?

How are they able to keep her there?

(Can't think of a good "when" to ask...*shrug* lol)

Was there an intent to study her before she developed any physical conditions? If her mother had given birth to a completely healthy baby, would the baby still have been researched?

Do we have a place similar to the place she is being kept on Earth? Is it a laboratory? Something similar? A nursery/ daycare center? Something similar? An orphanage? Something similar?

Does Callisto Kaylee promise some benefit to others with her conditions? To healthy citizens of Callisto? To healthy citizens of elsewhere (Earth, perhaps)?

So she will "benefit" those without her conditions, but not likely those with her conditions, right?

Is she being kept in a hospital? Does it benefit her to be kept where she is? Does it benefit her family? Someone at whatever this facility is?

Is she being kept there not only for research on her condition, but also to see how difficult/easy it would be for humans to live on Callisto?

Is she being kept there not only for research on her condition, but also you're good up to here to see how difficult/easy it would be for humans to live on Callisto? no - they already know it's possible in Callisto Colony. However, she is different from all other humans on the Colony - and what is human nature's response to things that are 'different'?

Is she being kept at a school?

Is someone paying her parents to allow the research? Will they become famous? Same questions for the person at the facility?

Will this research *save* money (as opposed to actually making money)?

wow =)

TV show? chiefly this reading material in some form? game? wouldn't be surprised if there were tie-in things such as this

Is Callisto Kaylee the star? unwittingly, yes Her caregiver? she's part of it Someone else? there are others involved Does she have some sort of power/ability that others do not have? well, in the show it seems so. She has seizures, however, and a kitteh to predict when they may happen, partially to - supposedly - keep her from having them...

Are the viewers aware that Callisto Kaylee has seizures? Would she be on the show if she did not have seizures?

I remember a movie from years ago about a man whose life was a TV show and everyone- his parents, his girlfriend, etc.- were all actors and actresses. He was the only one that wasn't in on it. I don't remember the title, but is this situation similar?

The Truman Show? I haven't actually watched it, all my knowledge comes from reading one (or three) of Balin's old LatVentures.
Kaylee, Ciaobella, you should watch the new (came out in 2005) Doctor Who if you enjoy sci-fi. I really like it, and I even occasionally learn the odd history tidbit-though it's usually mixed up with stuff that didn't really happen. Such as sentient plastic attempting to take over the world.

Are the viewers aware that Callisto Kaylee has seizures? no - not sure that they understand what seizures are Would she be on the show if she did not have seizures? yes, because she's otherwise 'malformed' - they would have just had to have thought of a way to make her deformity more 'interesting'.

I remember a movie from years ago about a man whose life was a TV show and everyone- his parents, his girlfriend, etc.- were all actors and actresses. He was the only one that wasn't in on it. I don't remember the title, but is this situation similar? It is, as Kyeann kitteh said below, "The Truman Show" - and this is good enough that I'm calling ***SPOILER***

A long time from now, in a galaxy that is our own, sometime when Duck Dodgers is out patrolling the galaxy with his eager young space cadet, there is a colony on Callisto, one of the Galilean moons of Jupiter. This colony gets shipments of test-tube embryos from Earth which are then implanted in "Birthmothers", in a society which has become complacent under Sameness. This utopia is given entertainment in the form of "reality" shows and "zoos" peopled by those grown from embryos which didn't "work out" - watched 24-7 by viewers as a "be glad you aren't freaks like them" sort of thing.

Callisto Kaylee was one of those embryos. Bereft of her genetic mother and torn from her surrogate, who can only watch through one-way glass as her baby grows up on camera, Callisto Kaylee's only comfort is the "Cheezburger Kitteh" which is her 'sidekick' on the show she unwittingly stars in. If she goes 'off-script' or does something unexpected, she is punished - usually by having an actor (one of her "caretakers", a doctor, or someone else) steal the kitteh or otherwise place her under stress. This action breaks the security of Kaylee's world and pushes her into a seizure...a seizure which is carefully documented and studied.

If any of you think this couldn't happen - well, it's already been imagined once (thank you, Kyeann kitteh), and it is Truth in Television (as tvtropes would say) that up until the last century or two ago, "deformed" people were paraded around in circuses and even exhibits at "human zoos". Even today, many of America's 'reality shows' are focused on "little people", dicephalic twins, or mothers with 'abnormally' (for this day and age) large families, being paid to churn out more to up the ratings even at risk to their health.

With thanks to my teachers for having me read The Giver and Brave New World, and to my mother for letting me watch The Truman Show as well as exposing me to "reality" television.

Even more thanks to Kyeann, Ciao, Noel, Dave, Shez, Doriana, Balin and all. Cheezburgurz for all the kittehz. =) Well done.
