A man lives in a small house, and in his back yard is an apple tree. Once or twice a year, a child knocks on the man's front door. When this happens, the man makes a phone call. If he cannot reach the person that he's calling, the man goes into the back yard and climbs all the way to the top of the apple tree. Why? |

Is it always Will who knocks? Does Isaac always try to call the same person? Does he climb the tree in order to: see something? Hear something? Put something there? Retrieve something? Send a signal? Relevant that it's an apple tree? Or could it be any tree? Any tree that can be easily climbed? Any fruit tree? Is there something relevant in the tree: before he climbs up? After? Relevant how long he stays there? |

Is it always Will who knocks? Not necessarily Does Isaac always try to call the same person? Yes Does he climb the tree in order to: see something? Yes Hear something? Put something there? Retrieve something? Send a signal? None of these Relevant that it's an apple tree? Or could it be any tree? It could, as long as it's...Any tree that can be easily climbed?...this, and another factor. Any fruit tree? Possibly but doesn't have to be a fruit tree Is there something relevant in the tree: before he climbs up? After? No Relevant how long he stays there? May be helpful to know Is it relevant what season of the year Will comes to Isaac? Yes Is it always when a tree has fruits? No When Isaac makes a call, is Will with him? Yes When Isaac climbs a tree, is Will with him? Yes Could Will climb the tree instead of Isaac? Will may be able to climb it, but he doesn't do it on these occasions Is Isaac's age relevant, besides he is an adult? Not really, just assume he's an adult who is still young enough to climb a tree Is Isaac impaired? No |

Does Will come to Isaac on spring? summer? fall? winter? During relevant holidays? Could Isaac climb a ladder? If Isaac's house was as high as a tree, could he just go on the upper floor or climb a roof? Does Isaac do anything relevant after having climbed a tree? Does Will? Does Isaac stay on the tree for few seconds? minutes? More than an hour? Until something else happens? Does Will need something from Isaac before he can leave? Does someone send Will to Isaac? |

If he does say anything, it's always the same meaning Does Isaac call a private person? Yes An institution? Police? No to both Does Will come to Isaac on spring? summer? fall? winter? Does Will need to get a tangible object from Isaac? Does Will need information? Does Will always get what he needs? Does it depend on the result of observation from a tree? Is Isaac's action after climbing the tree dependent on whether he sees something or not? Does Will raise funds for something? Does Isaac agree for Will's visits? Does he expect them? Does Will bring something for Isaac? Can the person who sends Will make the same phone call as Isaac does? |

this has a lovely lateral feel to it... Does someone in another location also climb a tree? and Issac can see them? If not is the something Issac sees a person? a building? Does Issac's behaviour surprise Will? alarm him? Is will performing a service for Issac? or vice versa? Is Issac likely to tip Will as a result of whatever is going on? Is Issac humouring Will? Is he pretending to be someone? someone that doesn't exist like Father Time or Santa Claus? Sorry , lots of random thoughts in that post |

Does Will need to get a tangible object from Isaac? No, but...Does Will need information?...yes to this. Does Will always get what he needs? Yes Does it depend on the result of observation from a tree? Yes Is Isaac's action after climbing the tree dependent on whether he sees something or not? Some of his actions, yes Does Will raise funds for something? No Does Isaac agree for Will's visits? Yes Does he expect them? Sometimes Does Will bring something for Isaac? No Can the person who sends Will make the same phone call as Isaac does? Good q - no, they can't. this has a lovely lateral feel to it...Thanks, that's what I was aiming for. About 20 years ago a friend of mine told me one riddle about a dwarf and some sawdust, and another one about a dead scuba diver in a tree. I've enjoyed the "classics" ever since then and find that style to be the most entertaining. Does someone in another location also climb a tree? and Issac can see them? No to both If not is the something Issac sees a person? Sometimes, but always...a building?...this. Does Issac's behaviour surprise Will? No alarm him? No Is will performing a service for Issac? I guess in a way, he is or vice versa? Moreso this Is Issac likely to tip Will as a result of whatever is going on? Yes Is Issac humouring Will? No Is he pretending to be someone? No someone that doesn't exist like Father Time or Santa Claus? No, not this idea Sorry , lots of random thoughts in that post Some very good q's |

Is the "neighbor" someone who lives next door to him? Behind him? Across the street? No, but in the same area If he cannot reach him by phone, does he climb the tree to try and see the neighbor? Exactly The neighbor's home? This is one of the things he looks at from his treetop perch, yes If Isaac manages to get through on the phone, does he ask for information? Yes does he get the same information he otherwise gets from climbing the apple tree? Yes is it relevant that it's an apple tree? No, just relevant that it's a somewhat tall tree and Isaac can reach a certain height by climbing it is the building Will's house? a lighthouse? a public building? This, and...a house?...this also, but it isn't the main building that Isaac is looking at apartment block? No does he look to see whether a flag is flying? No a light is on? curtains are drawn? These are both things that Isaac could be looking for in order to provide Will with necessary information. The presence or absence of these conditions would give Isaac the information he tried to find out by a phone call. is this action never necessary in summer? No or is it not possible? The actions can be done at any time, but there is only a need to do them once or twice a year at most. Sometimes a year may go by and it's not necessary to do at all. do the leaves get in the way? Not relevant |

Does Isaac work with books? Is he a librarian? He's a minister, so he works with relevant books Do they talk about a sermon? One aspect of it, and it's an implied subject Does Will desire something of a religious nature? No |

Do Will's parents simply want to know when the service starts? or whether it will take place at all, given that the road to the church may be blocked with snow in winter? Does Isaac, when on the tree, look whether there is light in the church? whether the church door is visible? (assuming that if the pastor managed to clear the way to the church from snow, the service will take place? Would Isaac make the same phone call, and/or climb on the tree the same way also if Will did not come? because he also needs to know this information himself? Is Isaac expection Will to come when a certain condition is met? Is he waiting for Will in such situation before making the phone call? |

Does Isaac have other ways to get the information Will needs? Does he always get the information only by phone/observation? Does Will come only when weather allows seeing the church from the tree? If church is not visible from the tree because of the weather and Isaac's call is not answered, can Will still get the information he needs? Does Isaac also work in church? If yes, the one he sees from the tree? Antother one? If another, does Will's family belong to the church of Isaac? Another church? |

Do the ministers talk about rites? baptism? confirmation? None of these specifics, but they could be implied (see below) Does it matter their religion? No (but assume they are the same religion/denomination) Do Will's parents simply want to know when the service starts? YES, or...whether it will take place at all, given that the road to the church may be blocked with snow in winter?...THIS is the main question that Will has! Does Isaac, when on the tree, look whether there is light in the church? whether the church door is visible? Yes, he could be looking for either of these because they would indicate something... (assuming that if the pastor managed to clear the way to the church from snow, the service will take place?) The pastor may be clearing the way, but other people would be involved (this is relevant) Would Isaac make the same phone call, and/or climb on the tree the same way also if Will did not come? No, because if Will didn't come then Isaac would assume he didn't need to make the phone call and/or climb the tree because he also needs to know this information himself? The only time Isaac needs this information is when Will knocks on his door Is Isaac expecting Will to come when a certain condition is met? Yes, at least if I'm understanding this question correctly. BUT...usually Will has already arrived by the time Isaac is aware of the condition Is he waiting for Will in such situation before making the phone call? YES - good q |

Is Will's family interested in the service only under certain condition? If yes, does the condition concern the family? The church? The weather? Will's family attends church regularly, and will always attend unless weather conditions make it impossible, or unless they get certain information from Will after he visits Isaac |

Let's see whether I got it right: Will's parents are regular churchgoers, but when there was a heavy snowfall in winter they prefer to make sure that the service is going to take place before they start to walk all the way through the snow. As they do not have a phone, but Isaac has, they send Will to Isaac. Isaac calls the pastor and gets the desired information. When the pastor does not pick up the phone Isaac climbs on the tree to have a look because he does not want to let Will without an answer and there is a certain chance that the pastor is already in the church. Isaac looks out whether he can see light in the church, an open door, people approaching the church -- all things that would indicate that the service takes place. Isaac is not interested in the information himself because he is not a regular churchgoer. Anything missing? |

Could you please answer my q's of Feb. 25, 3:58? Isaac is the pastor himself, right? Are he and his friend pastors of the same religion/church? If not, is that relevant why Will's family go to the friend's church instead of Isaac's one? If weather makes it difficult to go to the church, does it cause Will problems to come to Isaac? Does it cause Isaac problems to climb a tree? Is that relevant? |

Sorry I missed these! Does Isaac have other ways to get the information Will needs? No Does he always get the information only by phone/observation? Yes Does Will come only when weather allows seeing the church from the tree? No, visibility has nothing to do with when Will comes If church is not visible from the tree because of the weather and Isaac's call is not answered, can Will still get the information he needs? Good q - yes, he can, but Isaac will not give Will the information until he first makes the phone call, then if he gets no answer he climbs the tree Does Isaac also work in church? He is the pastor/minister at the church where Will ocmes If yes, the one he sees from the tree? No Another one? No, just the one If another, does Will's family belong to the church of Isaac? Another church? Will and his family all attend Isaac's church Let's see whether I got it right: Will's parents are regular churchgoers, but when there was a heavy snowfall in winter they prefer to make sure that the service is going to take place before they start to walk all the way through the snow. Yes As they do not have a phone, but Isaac has, they send Will to Isaac. Yes Isaac calls the pastor and gets the desired information. Yes, he does call the other pastor to get some information When the pastor does not pick up the phone Isaac climbs on the tree to have a look because he does not want to let Will without an answer and there is a certain chance that the pastor is already in the church. Yes Isaac looks out whether he can see light in the church, an open door, people approaching the church -- all things that would indicate that the service takes place. Yes - if the other pastor does not answer the phone and Isaac has to climb the tree to look at the other church, he's looking for these things Isaac is not interested in the information himself because he is not a regular churchgoer. No - Isaac is very interested in the information and he is the pastor/minister of the church that Will and his family attend Anything missing? The only thing that hasn't been discovered is why Isaac attempts to contact the other pastor and how this affects the information he gives to Will. There is an FA lurking that may clear this point up. It's a fairly basic subject that no one has asked about yet. Isaac is the pastor himself, right? Yes Are he and his friend pastors of the same religion/church? Assume so, yes If not, is that relevant why Will's family go to the friend's church instead of Isaac's one? Will's family always attends Isaac's church, never the other one If weather makes it difficult to go to the church, does it cause Will problems to come to Isaac? Will can get to Isaac faster and easier than others in his family. You can assume that if Will's family does not think they would have problems getting to Isaac's church they wouldn't send Will to visit Isaac. Does it cause Isaac problems to climb a tree? Is that relevant? Maybe - there may be occasions where Will arrives and Isaac cannot reach the other pastor, and weather conditions are so bad that he would have a very hard time getting up the tree (if a lot of ice is present, for example). If Isaac were unable to climb the tree, he would still give Will the information he needs, but the lurking FA is related to this topic. |

do the two churches share resources? for example, does the organist run from the other church to Isaac's so that he can play at Isaac's service? is the condition Isaac is looking for simply whether the other church is going ahead with its services despite the ice and snow? |

Does Will need information if Isaac will do the service in his (Isaac's) church? Or if the other pastor will do the service in his church? If the first case is correct: Is Isaac's decision about the service dependent on whether other pastor does the service? And only when he cannot establish this he makes the decision on his own? |

Do the two churches share resources? for example, does the organist run from the other church to Isaac's so that he can play at Isaac's service? No...but that's great thinking Is the condition Isaac is looking for simply whether the other church is going ahead with its services despite the ice and snow? YES Is the person/"neighbour" a man? woman? A man If this happens on a Saturday, are the churches Jesish? N/R ****** SPOILER ****** Does Will need information if Isaac will do the service in his (Isaac's) church? Yes, because Will lives in a rural area with dirt roads that are very dangerous for travel in wintry (especially icy) conditions. Will's family always attends church, and wants to even in bad weather, so they send Will to Isaac very early in the morning on icy wintry days to find out if they will be having a church service so the families can have time to get to church in the bad weather, or will know that they don't need to come that day. Or if the other pastor will do the service in his church? Will doesn't need this information, but Isaac does, because... If the first case is correct: Is Isaac's decision about the service dependent on whether other pastor does the service? YES! And only when he cannot establish this he makes the decision on his own? Exactly! The two churches are the only ones within a great distance from several rural towns. The towns are in an area that only gets icy, snowy weather once or twice a year, if at all. It's an era in which many families do not have phones and/or cars, so communication is limited and travel is difficult in certain conditions. Isaac is aware of the challenges facing local families, but doesn't want to be the "slack minister" who cancels their church services while the other pastor goes ahead despite the conditions. So when Will arrives, Isaac knows that the roads are bad near his house and other houses, so he calls the other pastor to see if that church will be open for services. If the other pastor doesn't answer, Isaac assumes he is outside clearing snow or otherwise preparing the church building, so as another measure he climbs the tree with binoculars to get a closer look at the other church building, a mile or so away. If he sees activity at the other church, he advises Will that their own church will meet. If he sees no activity, he cancels their own service. He probably places another call (the lurking FA) to the other pastor before Will departs just to make sure he is making the right decision. After all, how slack would he look to let a little ice and snow cancel his services while the neighbor church goes right ahead with theirs? This is based on a real life situation, although much more recent. Our church and another nearby church are both of the same religion/denomination, and previously both had pastors that were well known in the community. We live in the south, and rarely have winter weather that would cause cancellation of church service. But in cases of this rare icy weather occurring on a Saturday night/Sunday morning, the pastor of the other church would call our pastor to see if he had made a decision about holding or cancelling services that day. Our pastor joked that the other pastor didn't want to look bad by cancelling his services when the other big church "right down the street" went ahead with their services. The decision always needed to be made very early in the morning, since several people arrived at the building before the pastor to do some setup for the day's activities (turn heaters and lights on, etc.). Great job to all who joined in! |

And what kind of parents would send a child out in that kind of weather? But I don't think it was established just how old Will was, was it? Where I live, any snow qualifies as a 'snow day' when everything automatically shuts down; no need for trees or phone calls. but I don't have to 'get it' for this to be a good puzzle! |

Well speaking as an adult, I know that as much as I enjoy the rare 'snow days' we have, I can't spend as much time outside in the snow without getting uncomfortable compared to when I was a kid. Kids can be out in cold, snowy, icy conditions without being bothered by the elements for a while. And Will's age was never established but I'm sure his parents would have made sure he was adequately bundled up before making the journey. Glad you guys enjoyed it. |
