Despite the show of abundance to the correspondence corp. one correspondent saw the sign that the country they were visiting was in a serious famine. How did he know?

no pets? or no animals roaming the streets? no birds? probably early on in the famine but now it is more severe, also I don't think they were taken into the villages, if I remember right they were on a train

Were the trees devoid of leaves? Of shoots? Was it: all trees? A certain type of tree? All trees in an area? I know pine shoots are edible (though not very tasty in my opinion), are those relevant?
