When Mei-Ling, a Chinese teenager, visited the United States, she found a certain aspect of American life very surprising, as would many Asians, Europeans, Africans, and Latin Americans. What is it?

Does it involve life style? eating? social interaction? Some cultures get right in the face to talk but in America we keep more space between the communicators, is this relevant?

Does this aspect of life affect everyone in America? If not, does it affect members of a particular group? Does it affect people of a certain age? Is religion relevant? Prejudice? Race?

Was she surprised because she would expect that aspect of life in other countries, but not in the US? Because she wouldn't expect it anywhere? Because it seems somehow not to fit with other aspects of American life? Is the aspect a positive one? Negative? Neutral? Positive for some but negative for others?

Is the aspect connected a to a law? An attitude? Something people do? Have to do? Don't do? Have the right to do? The way people are treated?

Would Mei-LIng realise that this aspect existed as soon as she arrived in America? By talking to someone? Observing something? Doing something herself? Would all Americans be aware that this aspect was true of the US? Would it be something they take for granted and don't realise is surprising?

Is the aspect unexpected because it doesn't seem to fit with American values? With something to do with the geography of the US? Its history? Population? Politics?

Are any of the following relevant about America being a young country:
The fact that buildings/structures will be relatively new?
The fact that institutions will be relatively new?
The fact that only a comparatively small number of generations of Americans have lived?
The fact that many Americans can trace their roots back to other countries?

Is the feeling that older things are somehow better/more well established/more reliable or trustworthy at all relevant? Or conversely, the idea that new and modern things are better?

*********** SPOILER ************
When Chinese teenager Mei-Ling was visiting the US, she got into a conversation with an American woman who said she collected antiques. "What dynasty?" Mei-Ling asked. When the woman said she collected American antiques, Mei-Ling wondered how such a young country could have antiques. This tale, which comes from a young adult novel, is about antiques rather than historical preservation, but it would work for historical preservation, too. Please check out my new puzzle!!
