Did it have to do with safety or security in your home?

Smoke/fire alarms relevant? locks? house alarms? some kind of medical equipment?

Wild guess: You heard random beeping, which freaked you out, until you realized that it was your smoke alarm needing its battery replaced?

LOL... sorry to spoil so quickly. I have to admit I've experienced the same sensation, which is probably why it came to my mind so easily.

Rbruma

On the contary please do put such a device in your home. They are a life saver but i agree it's somewhat disconcerting when the dead battery beeping starts.

Until that situation happened, I didn't even know I had a smoke alarm. I've only lived there for two months and I haven't paid much attention to what is on the ceiling.

Yeah, the problem with the battery alarm on these things is that it goes off very infrequently. A very short beep, and then there's minutes until the next one. I remember when i was a kid, and my father thought we had bats in the chimney because of this intermittent noise. Turns out it was an old forgotten smoke alarm laying in a closet in the attic...
