The well-meaning doctor's attempt to comfort the widow made her feel immeasurably worse. How come?

Was the doctor comforting the widow about the death of her husband? Is it relevant how her husband died? Had the doctor been treating him?

Did he die of an illness? Accident? Murder? Suicide? Natural causes? Did the doctor make a mistake in his treatment?

Did the attempt at comforting the widow make her feel worse because it implied that she was at fault somehow? That her husband need not have died? That he suffered?

Is it relevant how old the man was? How old the widow is? Did the man die directly before the attempt at comforting? Did he die while under the care of the doctor? Was it the doctor who informed the widow that her husband had died?

Is the widow ill? Is she sad that her husband died?

Did she know that her husband had died before the doctor consoled her? Did she have some reason to be glad he had died? Or at least not to be too upset? Were the two happily married when the man died? Is it relevant if they had any children? Is anyone else relevant other than the woman, her late husband and the doctor?

Did the doctor try to comfort her by suggesting there was some positive aspect to his death? By suggesting there would be some problem with his continuing to live?

Is the doctor's sex relevant?

Did the widow misunderstand the doctor's comments? Is it relevant how long the man had been dying/ill/injured before he died?

Did the doctor's comments accidentally reveal something to the widow that she hadn't known before? Had the man been having an affair? Had the wife?

Did the man die suddenly? Had he been ill/dying for days? Weeks? Months? Years?

Did the woman originally have a reason to not be too sad, but the doctor's comments revealed that actually she should feel sad?

So did the doctor's condolences reveal that the husband had been having an affair? Did the doctor know that the woman was the dead man's wife?

Is there one other relevant person? More? Is the other relevant person the woman (or man?) that the husband had been having the affair with? Had she been visiting the man while he was ill? Did he make some comment like 'his sister obviously really cared for him, she was visiting all the time' but he had no sister? Or 'he asked for you at the end, he kept saying "Jane"' when the wife's name is not Jane?

********** SPOILER ************
After Henry died, the doctor tried to comfort his widow by saying, "He loved you so much. He kept moaning, 'Jane, I love you. I've never loved anyone else. You mean everything to me.'" Henry's wife's name is Lucy, but his law partner's name is Jane. This puzzle is adapted from a novel. Sorry it was so easy; please check out my new one.
