Is Loretta a young child? Teenager? Adult?

Is the teacher a primary school teacher? Secondary school? Other school? Sunday school? A non-academic teacher (eg a sports or driving instructor)? Relevant what subject she teaches?

Did Loretta think that because of something the teacher said? Something she did?

Does the teacher teach a subject where she would not be required to read in front of the class?

Is it relevant how Loretta thinks someone could qualify as a teacher without being able to read?

Does the teacher have the same native language as Loretta?

Did Loretta think that the teacher directly said she could not read? That she made some excuse to avoid reading? That she made a mistake in reading something? That she tries to cover up the fact she could not read?

Could the teacher in fact read perfectly well?

Did Loretta think that the teacher had failed to read a particular thing? Did she think that what the teacher said contradicted a text that the teacher should have been able to read? Or was unnecessary because of something the teacher should have read?

Did she tell Loretta to go somewhere? Do something? Something related to her education?

Did she think the teacher had failed to read a sign? A book? A letter? Note? Something on the wall? Something printed on paper? Something Loretta had give to the teacher?

Had the teacher read the thing? If not, did they have a good reason for not having done so, other than not being able to read?

Did the teacher say the relevant thing during a class? Did she tell Loretta to go somewhere within the school? To go and see a particular person? To say something? To carry out an educational exercise?

and there was something written somewhere that made L think that the instruction was unnecessary? that it was a bad idea for her to follow the instruction? that someone else should be given the instruction? that the teacher should follow the instruction herself?

Is the meaning of a particular word relevant?

Did she either get something wrong (if she is stupid), or over analyse something/see a meaning most people wouldn't (if she is bright)?

Is it relevant that a student who is particularly dumb or bright might get treated differently from the average students? Might do different work? Have special classes?

Is it relevant that students who are above or below average intelligence are more likely to get bullied? no to be socially isolated? no

She's supposed to give the note to someone, right? yes This someone - her parents? noanother student? possiblysomeone who works at the school? dittoif the latter, the principal? a teacher? dotto a counsellor? ditto a psychologist? another staff member? ditto. HINT: There are two notes she is supposed to give people(who could be in any of the categories indicated).

Would one scenario take place if she was exceptionally smart, and the second take place if she exceptionally non-smart?
Did the two notes have exactly the same content?
Is handwriting involved?
Did the teacher ask Loretta to have the person she was sent to read the note? Would a person of average intelligence be likely to understand the meaning of the note?

so scenario one: teacher calls Loretta over? Teacher gives Loretta a note? and tells her to find X? and give the note to X? and the note had X's name written on it? or teacher gives her two notes? and tells her to give one to X and one to Y? and they are named X and Y?
did the teacher tell Loretta which note to give which person? using some other information than the names? some other characteristic of the notes?

Do the notes look the same, except for the names written on them? Are they the same colour? If not, did the teacher refer to them by their colours (e.g. "Give the blue note Mr X, and give the yellow note Ms Y")?
Are the notes in envelopes? Relevant?

HINT: The envelopes had different names on them & differed in another observable way, too, such as being different colors or having the names in different colored ink.

Did the envelopes have any words on them? We've already established that each envelope bore the name of the teacher to whom it was to be delivered.

Recap: Add the following to the puzzle description: Loretta is either unusually bright or unusually dumb. The teacher gave Loretta 2 envelopes to take to 2 different teachers. Each envelope bore the name of the teacher it was going to & the envelopes differed in some other way, too.For example, maybe the names were written in different colors or maybe the envelopes themselves were of different colors.

Did Loretta think that the teacher was referring to the envelopes by colour because she herself couldn't read the names?

If Loretta is dumb, has the teacher colour-coded the envelopes to make it easier for Loretta to give the correct letter to the correct teacher? Can Loretta not read herself in this scenario?
Relevant why Loretta is chosen to deliver the messages?

Actually, I think Enjay is close enough for me to declare a

***** SPOILER **********

Loretta is either about 4 or she's over 8 & in a Special Ed class. Her teacher, who thinks Loretta can't read, gives her 2 notes & says something like, "Take the one with red writing to Ms. Glerk & the one with blue writing to Mr. Blorp." Loretta thinks, Can't the teacher read? The red writing says Ms. Glerk & the blue writing says Mr. Blorp." So, even if she's a 4-year-old who can read, she's not so great at reasoning, because she didn't realize that the teacher thought she couldn't read. Thanks for sticking with it, everyone, & for solving it, Enjay, & of course you know where my replacement puzzle is.
