The ABC company was working on a project that would directly compete with the services offered by the XYZ company. Yet XYZ supported the project. Why?

Is the type of service offered by the XYZ company relevant?

Are both companies based in the same country?

Is ABC a bigger company than XYZ? The other way round? Relevant?

Is XYZ planning to buy ABC? To sue ABC?

Is the type of service offered by the XYZ company relevant? This is apparently a true story so finding out might be helpful, but the same principle could apply in many industries

Are both companies based in the same country? Irrel

Is ABC a bigger company than XYZ? The other way round? Relevant? Irrel

Is XYZ planning to buy ABC? No To sue ABC? No

Does XYZ think they will benefit from supporting ABC? Support: financial? Legal? Ideological? Does XYZ think ABC will pave the way for something relevant? Do they want to see how ABC does at something, before trying it themselves? Do they want to buy services from ABC? Or sell services to them?

Would the third party buy XYZ? Sue XYZ? Try to bring down XYZ in any way?
Was the third party offering something related to the service in any way? A certain product? Relevant?
Or, is the third party the group of customers of XYZ/ABC? Would they accept more of XYZ's offers if ABC went bankrupt?
Is the identity of the service itself relevant?
Would the downfall of ABC cause the downfall of any other companies? Relevant? Would the downfall of other companies affect XYZ?
Does ABC's services make XYZ's services easier for them to complete?
Is the third party indifferent/likes XYZ better because XYZ supported ABC? Are XYZ/ABC/both trying to gain the support of the third party?
That's all I can think of for now... :P

Would they have bought ABC back? Did the third party support/endorse ABC? Is the third party mentioned here superior (business-wise) to XYZ? --> If not, are they trying to become bigger than XYZ?

If this is all right, would the third party become more powerful than XYZ?
Was XYZ afraid that the third party would try to bring them down if they didn't support ABC?

Sorry-what else do we need to figure out again? I forgot... I'll give a recap:

XYZ and ABC both provided competing services. ABC was struggling, but XYZ supported them because they didn't want ABC to go bankrupt. The reason for this was that if ABC went bankrupt, a third party would buy the company and pose a bigger threat to XYZ than ABC had.

The last little bit is why exactly the third party would pose a bigger threat to XYZ than allowing ABC to continue would.

Thanks for the recap!
Would the third party have more business than XYZ (in offering the services) because they bought ABC? Is there a certain component to the third party combined with ABC that makes people want to buy the services (compared to XYZ)?

Yes Is there a certain component to the third party combined with ABC that makes people want to buy the services (compared to XYZ)? Not sure what you mean by 'component' - if the third party bought out a bankrupt ABC, they would have one major advantage over XYZ that would get them more customers

Would the third party be larger financially if they bought ABC? Would ABC become larger than before with the support of the third party?

(I have an idea about this that's on the tip of my tongue, but I can't seem to grasp it now...)

Would the third party be larger financially if they bought ABC? They would be more successful financially than before, if that is what you mean? Would ABC become larger than before with the support of the third party? No, ABC would be bankrupt and the third party would own their assets

This is really nearly solved, the only detail is why the third party would pose such a big threat to XYZ. I will spoil soon anyway because almost all the pieces are there.

Would the third party be so powerful that they could manipulate competition (between it and XYZ)? Would the third party (having bought ABC) be able to decrease the costs of the service itself? Decrease the costs of running the company? (I feel like I'm going in circles here...)

Would the third party be so powerful that they could manipulate competition (between it and XYZ)? Would the third party (having bought ABC) be able to decrease the costs of the service itself? Yes! Decrease the costs of running the company? (I feel like I'm going in circles here...) No, you got it!

*****SPOILER*****
The building of the Channel Tunnel between England and France was carried out with the cooperation of both countries' governments (ABC in this puzzle). When the project was completed, it would be stiff competition for ferry companies (XYZ). But according to someone I was talking to, when the project began to run over budget and there was talk of abandoning it, the ferry companies worked to keep the project going. They were afraid that if the project was abandoned, a third party would be able to buy it up cheaply and run very cheap services across the channel (having saved money on obtaining the project). By allowing the project to continue, the ferry companies kept a price advantage over the tunnel.

The title was a reference to "see the light at the end of the (channel) tunnel".

Thanks to all who played and Olive for reviving it!
