A quick glance at the people in the library revealed what must have happened last week.

Based on what happened to me today.

Did the event happen in the library? Were the people patrons of the library? or staff working there?

Did the people share some common experience? a common trait? clothing relevant? physical appearance?

If you think of a title let me know and I'll add it in for you

Did the event happen to the patrons of the library? to each of them individually? or to them as a group? Are they doing the same thing? behaving in a similar way? reading or doing research about the same topic?
If not clothing relevant, then perhaps: items they have with them? haircut? make-up?
wild guess: is the Champions League final relevant?

Are these items things you normally would not bring with you when you're going to the library?
Did the students bring them because they need them in the library? because they needed them for some activity they did before going to the library? for some activity after the library?
Were the items brought in to show sympathy with someone/something? to protest? to show an opinion?
(college body elections relevant?)
Were the items distributed among the students for free?
Are the items blue? yellow?
The items are not simply books, are they?
Are blue and yellow the college colors?
Can the items easily be carried around? in a bag? in a pocket? are they badges or stickers?

did each person have only one such item? two? one of each colour? or was each item coloured both yellow and blue? stripes? spots? there are two types of items, the yellow one and the blue one. Most people had either one or both of them, and some had none.

had there been a sporting event? an election? a ball? prize-giving? graduation? no to all

were they items of clothing? balloons? no to all

Small hint: The items themselves are things students typically bring to the library. However...

Had there been a concerted effort to get overdue library books back? no Were the yellow and blue items notifications that had been sent to them? no - we're not even allowed to borrow books from that particular library in the first place. Which I think doesn't make sense, but that's a different story.

Were they freebies yes from an event that they'd been to? I wouldn't call it an event Advertising something? yes

A RECAP because this is almost solved -
A lot of students in the library had a yellow pen and a blue paper-ish item with them the other day. Those items were freebies.
Where did they get them from? What exactly is the blue item?

Were the yellow and blue items given out the students by some organization? if so: by a students organization? by a charity? by the university? by the city (or other) government? by a political party? by a trade union? by a commercial company?
Would it help to identify this organization? Are blue and yellow colors this organization frequently uses in advertising?
Did they give out other items besides pens and notebooks? Did they give these items specifically to students? or to anybody who was around?

Would it help to identify this organization? no, it's just important that it's some kind of organization Are blue and yellow colors this organization frequently uses in advertising? no

Ok, final step: How did I know that the items had been given out by said organization?

Was the organization's name printed on the item?
Had they given away similar items already once before? Are they doing this every year?
Did you also receive such items?
Is one more item they gave away relevant, too?

Was the organization's name printed on the item? no
Had they given away similar items already once before? see next question Are they doing this every year? yes, every semester
Did you also receive such items? I had previously received them, yes
Is one more item they gave away relevant, too? no

********SPOILER********
Once per semester, a student organization gives out goodie bags with all kinds of freebies and samples on campus.
When I saw a lot of students with blue notebooks and yellow pens in the library the other day, I knew that the bags had been distrubuted - because they always contain the same pen and notebook. Everyone uses them for a while, and then they slowly disappear until the bags are given out again.

Thanks for playing, Balin, Shez, Lynne etc, and thumbs up for Mimino for solving this!
New puzzle will be up right away.
