Hestia is a sociologist who found herself placed under an illogical restriction when she presented her research proposal to her university's review board for research on human subjects. What was it?

Was she planning to do research on a particular demographic group? If so, is the group characterized by the same sex? age? ethnicity? religion? profession? education? income class?

Is it relevant what method of research she was planning to use? If so, interviews? questionnaires? observation? lab experiments?

Would the restriction make it impossible carry out her research?

Of course, the last question should be
Would the restriction make it impossible to carry out her research?

Do they all share the same hobby/interest? Do they speak the same language/dialect? Do they all have the same family situation (i.e. all of them are divorced/widowed/adopted/...)? Are they twins?

Does this happen in the US? Relevant? present day? Relevant?

So she wanted to do some qualitative research on a group of people? who shared an interest? did she want to become part of their group? do what they do? did she want to be 'under cover'?

the restriction: some restriction in what she could ask about? about how she could ask? about who she could interview? about where she could go? about how long she had to do it? about what she had to tell the subjects? about money? about incentives for the subjects? about her expenses? about how many people could be studied? about how many people could be investigators? about who could be investigators?

the interest/hobby: does it have any issues with legality? could it be considered unethical by the average person? does it harm anyone in any way? does it cause damage to property? does it cost money to undertake? is it something that is carried out mainly outside? mainly inside?

is the restriction intended to protect her? other investigators? to protect the subjects? to protect anyone else? intended to make the study ethical? to make it more valid? to make it cheaper? to make it more feasible?

BDSM is, according to wikipedia, "a variety of erotic practices involving dominance and submission, role-playing, restraint, and other interpersonal dynamics", and stands for bondage and discipline, domination and submission, and sadism and masochism. So... is this relevant?

Ok, let me sum up what we have to far: Hestia is a sociologist who is planning to do research on pedophiles. Her university's review board places her under a restriction that is supposed to protect her. Right so far?

Was she planning to use a decoy?

was the restriction to protect her from being thought to be doing something illegal? or to protect her from molestation?
is the oddity that the restriction sought to protect her when she is, by definition, not within the 'target' group of interest of the paedophiles?

*** SPOILER **********
Clever Hannah triumphs again!! When British sociologist Sarah D. Goode was planning a study that involved interviewing pedophiles, her university wanted her to carry an alarm she could activate if she was in danger. She pointed out that a 40ish woman would hardly be in danger from pedophiles. Sorry this gruesome puzzle was so easy. Please check out its replacement!!
