His knowledge of Scripture saved his life

No in-depth knowledge of Scripture needed here.

His #1 = His #2 = H/A/M?
Scripture = bible?
Does this happen in the [LTPF list of centuries]? Location relevant?

Was his life in immediate danger? If so, was he about to be murdered? excecuted? about to die in an accident? to die from an illness?

Did he quote a famous verset from the Bible and that changed the mind of the executioners? Or rather he was physically protected by a copy of the Bible (like stopping a bullet)?

Did he actually quote the Bible?

Did he prove something by the knowledge (such as that he was a Catholic/Protestant). Actually, was his denomination relevant?

Did he use it as a proof before a court?

Did he show his knowledge by speaking? Doing something? Was he asked a question?

Did he show his knowledge by speaking? he said something, yes Doing something? Was he asked a question? yes
Was the manner of execution relevant? in his case, to save invoking the list of methods of execution, it was hanging

Is he innocent? is he asked if he has any last words? If it doesn't involve innocence does what he says make people sympathise with him? or does it raise questions over their legal right to execute him?

Does he intend to save himself by saying what he does?

Do we need to establish exactly when he says what he does? is he in the condemned cell? on the gallows? Does a minister/priest visit him?

Did many people hear what he said? was he answering a question?

Did his knowledge relate to the life of Christ? another biblical character?

Would he have been saved had he faced any other method of execution?

Did many people hear what he said? yes was he answering a question? yes

Did his knowledge relate to the life of Christ? no, to the Books of the Psalms another biblical character? no

Is it relevant who asked the question? If yes: priest? judge? executioner? audience?
Did he refer to the Book of Psalms in his response? Did the question refer to the Book of Psalms?
Did his response raise doubts to his identity?
Did his answer to the question take much time? Enough for someone to bring the cancellation of the punishment?

So if what he said didn't prove his innocence did he avoid the drop on a technicality?

Did this incident cause any laws to be changed?

Is it relevant who asked the question? If yes: priest? judge? executioner? audience? the account doesn't say, but I'm presuming the priest
Did he refer to the Book of Psalms in his response? yes Did the question refer to the Book of Psalms? and yes
Did his response raise doubts to his identity? no
Did his answer to the question take much time? not his speaking, as such Enough for someone to bring the cancellation of the punishment? but this was the outcome. Well done. Very close now

So if what he said didn't prove his innocence did he avoid the drop on a technicality? no

Did he choose it for it's length knowing that there was a reprieve on it's way? YES exactly! That's all I was looking for. It was Psalm 119, but I didn't expect everyone to know that

********* SPOILER ***********

At the time and place that this hanging took place (Scotland, early 19th century) it was the custom to allow the prisoner to choose a Psalm to be sung. This prisoner chose the longest one, which was fortuitous (always like to include that word if I can!) as his reprieve came before they were half way through
.

Thank you one and all.
