Did you say two things in order to cover your bases? Was the trap purely verbal, or an instruction to do something or go somewhere? A question in an exam?

Was this in a response to a question someone asked face to face IRL? A job interview? Someone who you were romantically interested in?

Were you asked a question? If so, was this from someone who had authority over you? Were you in potential legal trouble? The part of the trap that wasn't verbal: Was there body language involved? A physical meeting? Did you receive a phone call? email or other written correspondence?

Does time of day matter?

From the time the "trap" was initiated, to the time you "said both", was it more than 10 minutes? More than 2 hours? More than a day?

The part of the trap that wasn't verbal: Was there body language involved? A physical meeting? Did you receive a phone call? email or other written correspondence? No to all

Does time of day matter? No

From the time the "trap" was initiated, to the time you "said both", was it more than 10 minutes? More than 2 hours? More than a day? Depending on what you mean by "initiated", either just a few seconds or 30-40 years

Where there only two possible answers?

Of course, it should have been "Were there only two possible answers?", not "Where". Shame on me.

Relevant what the question was about? If so, your family? politics? entertainment? sports? school? food/drink? technology?

Did you say the correct answer and another possible answer? two wrong answers?

Did your mum want to test your knowledge? Or did she not know the answer herself?

Was this part of a game? Trivial pursuit?

Was the question worded ambiguously?

Was it an older version of Trivial Pursuit? If so, had the correct answer changed over the years? Did you give both the answer that was correct when the game came out and the one that is correct now?

Could both answers have been considered correct? Did you suspect that whichever you said your mum would say the correct answer was the other? Was one answer a more specific version of the other (say if it was asking where something took place, and the answer could be 'Paris' or 'France')? Was the answer on the card actually correct? Was it a question that has a commonly-believed but wrong answer?

Did your mum ask this question to trap you?

Did you give both the actual correct answer and the answer that the card gave? Did people in the past believe the correct answer to be one thing, but nowadays know it to be something else? Is the answer something that has changed its name since the publishing of the game? Would the answer on the card ever have been correct?

Would the people creating the game have thought that the answer they were putting on the card was correct? Would many people have thought this at the time? Everyone?

Would it help to figure out what kind of answer it was? An object? Person? Place? Number? A fact?

Did someone at some stage of the game creation process deliberately insert an untrue fact? Is it anything like when map makers put in a non-existent road so they will know if someone has copied their map without permission? Are any earlier or later editions of the game relevant? Was the false fact inserted as a correction to a previous error? Was a misunderstanding involved? A mishearing?

Did someone at some stage of the game creation process deliberately insert an untrue fact? Is it anything like when map makers put in a non-existent road so they will know if someone has copied their map without permission? THIS, and we've got a solve. Are any earlier or later editions of the game relevant? Was the false fact inserted as a correction to a previous error? Was a misunderstanding involved? A mishearing?

****SPOILER****

One of the cards in the original "Trivial Pursuit" game asks the question "What is Lieutenant Columbo's first name?", giving the answer "Philip." However, this was a copyright trap - a fictional "fact" - inserted by the writer of a trivia book, ensuring that no one copied the facts in his book without permission. Upon the discovery of this, he sued the gamemakers; however, he lost when the judge ruled that the gamemakers had used several trivia sources for the game, not just the one, and that facts are not copyrightable.

I knew this story, so when the question came up during the game, I gave both the copyright trap answer - the one on the card - and the correct answer, "Frank."

For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbo#First_name

Nice solve Enjay. New puzzle shortly.

Good puzzle! Snopes.com has a page of spoof facts presented as true, and there have been instances of them being presented as true on TV shows etc.
