I once read a supposedly true anecdote about a woman who uses her knitting skills in a way that seems reasonable at first but incredible once you think about it. What is it?

Are her knitting skills just being good at knitting? Or more specific (eg being good at a particular stitch)?

Does she use the skills in knitting something? If so, does she knit with wool? Some other kind of fibre? Does she make clothes? Blankets? Toys? Does she make something that is not usually made with knitting?

Does she use her skills to help others? To improve life for herself?

Does she knit something that isn't normally knit-ed? Chain mail? Human flesh? Hair?

Was this skill used to save somebody's life?

Does it involve using a different knitting method? Such as knitting with your feet?

Is it relevant what exactly she knits? What materials she uses? What she does with the knitted things? Whether she gets money for them?

relevant who she taught? relevant where she taught them? relevant what she taught them to knit? relevant how quickly she taught them? relevant what they then knitted? relevant how many people she taught?

in the original puzzle statement you use the word 'incredible' - do you mean literally that it seems unbelievable? or surprising? or impressive?

did she teach them so that they then had a skill they could use to improve their lives? to make money for themselves? to start businesses?

did she introduce knitting into a group of people who hadn't previously knitted? or known about knitting? people in a country where no one previously knitted?

Is the woman a prisoner herself? Employed by the prison? Is it unlikely because the people she teaches are tough, hardened criminals who would not normally be the kind of people who knit? Because knitting needles could be a dangerous weapon?

Is the woman a prisoner herself? no Employed by the prison? She could be either an employee or a volunteer. Is it unlikely because the people she teaches are tough, hardened criminals who would not normally be the kind of people who knit? noBecause knitting needles could be a dangerous weapon? yes

*********** SPOILER *****************
The anecdote was about a women who taught knitting to women prisoners, but knowledge of prisons (largely gleaned from "Law & Order," of course) suggests that it is very unlikely that prison authorities would allow prisoners access to knitting needles. But I will allow you access to my new puzzle -- please check it out!!

I saw a news short on 2 retirees teaching prisoner's to knit. They use blunt plastic needles and the class size is limited to maintain a certain level of control/observation. I'm sure they must do an inventory of the supplies before and after the class. Plus, most prisons aren't filled with people who committed violent crimes (especially in California with their 3 strikes law). The inmates seem to genuinely enjoy the diversion. There's a long waiting list to get into the class.

What was apparently my passive scrund rested not on the idea that most women prisoners were violent but on the idea that most women's prisons treated women prisoners as if they were violent.
