My Jewish family did something that is odd for a Jewish family, In fact, I don't know of any other Jewish family that has done it (although a few probably have). What is it?

Is it something forbidden by the religion? Like eating pork? Or something that isn't expressly permitted? Like celebrating Christmas?

Just celebrating Easter in general? That's 1/2 of it; after all, it's not that rare simply fir Jewish families to celebrate Easter.

RECAP: Add the following to the puzzle description: My Jewish family did x & refrained from doing y, which made for an odd combination for a Jewish family. Holidays are involved.

Is Passover/Seder relevant? no Did you refrain from observing Passover? My family always had seders (& saved matzo balls for me after I stopped going to seders). This is irrel to the puzzle.

Is doing x celebrating Easter? A particular part of celebrating Easter? Is the division between the religious aspect of Easter and the more commercial/child friendly side (the Easter bunny, chocolate eggs etc) relevant?

Is doing x celebrating Easter? yesA particular part of celebrating Easter? yes Is the division between the religious aspect of Easter and the more commercial/child friendly side (the Easter bunny, chocolate eggs etc) relevant? Yes. I said the puzzle involved something my Jewish family did & something we refrained from doing. What we did was celebrate Easter in a secular way: Easter baskets, Easter candy, Easter eggs that we dyed, & a new Easter bonnet every two years. So what did we refrain from doing?

Did you refrain from talking about the religious aspects? Did you celebrate Easter as a purely secular holiday, and not a Christian one?

Did you refrain from talking about the religious aspects? Yes, but that's not the solution to the puzzle. Simply celebrating Easter in a secular way is not all that unusual for Jewish families. Did you celebrate Easter as a purely secular holiday, and not a Christian one? ditto

Did you make up a new easter story? Did you alter it to fit better with your family's own religion? Did you refrain from celebrating another holiday?
Did you refrain from including a part of the usual secular easter celebration? The easter bunny? Were you always fully aware that it was your parents hiding the eggs?

Did you refrain from celebrating Christmas? yes Another Christian holiday? irrel A Jewish holiday? irrel

********** SPOILER ***************
Many Jewish families (especially in communities with few Jews) celebrate secular versions of Christmas and Easter, and many (especially in mainly Jewish communities) celebrate neither. My family (in the Brooklyn Jewish community)celebrated Easter with Easter eggs, baskets, candy, & bonnets, but did not celebrate Christmas at all. We didn't have Christmas trees or exchange Christmas presents (although we occasionally visited the department store Santas). When I was in college, a Christian friend told me that Easter was much more significant to Christian theology than Christmas. When I mentioned this to my parents, my father said, "Well, do you think we're headed for hell?" I guess his point was that, if you weren't religious, you might as well celebrate what you enjoy. I agree -- and I hope you enjoy my new puzzle.

Easter's best - the weather's nice, you don't have to kill yourself buying presents and writing hundreds of cards - and you get to eat chocolate!

I agree--Easter also has more in the way of distinctive secular delights -- candy, bonnets, eggs, baskets -- while Christmas just has trees& wreaths.
