This is another "theatre connections" puzzle, based on Peter365's idea with songs. I ran one before (it's in the October 2011 solved section), and now I'm doing another. Different criteria, but the same rules (which I'm copy/pasting from the first one I ran):

Post lyrics to songs from musicals and state what musical it is from. If the musical has the three criteria I'm thinking of, I will respond with another lyric (from the same musical, but not necessarily the same song); if not, I will say No and try to make some sort of pun while doing so. (NOTE: Because I love theatre, I'll be posting lyrics whether it fits all three or not. Basically, this puzzle is an excuse to post as many theatre lyrics as possible.) I'll also state how many of the criteria it did hit. (Another NOTE: depending on how long this gets, I may also post which criteria it hit.)

And... go!

Who will buy this wonderful morning?
Such a sky you never did see!
Who will tie it up with a ribbon
And put it in a box for me?

Falling in love with love is falling for make-believe
Falling in love with love is playing the fool
Caring too much is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust is just for children in school
I fell in love with love one night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see
I fell in love with love everlasting
And love fell out with me...

(Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997) - though I think it was a cut song from some other show first. But...Bernadette Peters. Just...*Bernadette Peters.*)

And we murmured our how-do-you-do's
I wanted to ring out the bells
And fling out my arms
And to sing out the news

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again.
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

(Les Misérables)

It's the circle of life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle
The circle of life

Puerto Rico, my heart's devotion
Let it slip back in the ocean
Always the hurricanes blowing
Always the population growing
And the money owing
And the sunlight streaming
And the natives steaming
I like the isle of Manhattan
Smoke on your pipe and put that in

I like to be in America
OK by me in America
Everything free in America

For a small fee in America

"America", West Side Story (I like the film version better than the stage one, lol)

Then describe it!
He came toward me.
With the pistol?
From my bureau.
Did you fight him?
Like a tiger;
He had strength and she had none
And yet we both reached for the gun

But I tell you a cat needs a name that's particular
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?

A robin feathering his nest
Has very little time to rest
While gathering his bits of twine and twig
Though quite intent in his pursuit
He has a merry tune to toot
He knows a song will move the job along

Don't you fret, Monsieur Marius
I don't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
You're here, that's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
And rain will make the flowers grow

Can you feel the love tonight?
It is where we are
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we got this far
And can you feel the love tonight?
How it's laid to rest
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best

Are we supposed to ask if we think we found out the criteria? If so,is one of them whether there is a film version of the musical?

Oh, and I can't withhold from saying how absolutely i LOVED Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger's rendition of the part of CHICAGO you quoted!

By the way, I'm just going to clarify this: None of the criteria have to do with whether I or anyone else have actually seen the musical. These are all objective criteria.

Now, back to the lyrics...

Whatever you do
I’ll do it, too
Show me everything and tell me how
It all means something and yet nothing to me

Oh I can see there’s so much to learn
It’s all so close and yet so far!
I see myself as others see me
Oh I just know there’s something bigger out there

I wanna know;
Can you show me?
I wanna know about these strangers like me
Tell me more, please show me
Something’s familiar about these strangers like me

Is a listing on a particular website relevant? e.g. IMDB.

When you turn to the subject of Harry
That's a horse from a different safari.
He can box like a fox, he's as dumb as an ox
But it's Harry I'm planning to marry. (Calamity Jane)

Women are irrational, that's all there is to that!
There heads are full of cotton, hay, and rags!
They're nothing but exasperating, irritating,
vacillating, calculating, agitating,
Maddening and infuriating hags!
why can't a woman be more like a man? (My Fair Lady)

The views of Prof Higgins are not necessarily mine

Now it's always once upon a time
In New York City
It's a big old, bad old, tough old town, it's true
But beginnings are contagious there
They're always setting stages there
They're always turning pages there for you
Ain't it great the way it all begins
in New York City?
Right away you're making time and making friends
No one cares where you were yesterday
If they pick you out you're on your way
To a once upon a time that never ends

"Once Upon A Time In New York City" - Oliver & Company. (By the way, the very beginning of that movie always makes me cry, before anything even happens, just the second I see the skyline =( )

For I'm gettin' married in the morning.

Technically, this is a film, and I'm looking for stage musicals. But since I can't resist lyrics:

Why should I worry?
Why should I care?
I may not have a dime
But I got street savoir faire
Why should I worry?
Why should I care?
It's just bebopulation
And I got street savior faire

Are the people behind the musicals relevant?

Gilbert & Sullivan?

Disney?

Other?

Does it matter if they've been up for, and/or won Tony and/or Olivier awards?

Must the musicals have been shown on Broadway? In London's West End? Off Broadway? Elsewhere?

There's no business like show business
Like no business I know
Everything about it is appealing
Everything the traffic will allow
Nowhere can you get that happy feeling
When you are stealing that extra bow (Annie Get Your Gun)

We are revolting children
Living in revolting times
We sing revolting songs
Using revolting rhymes
We'll be revolting children
'Til our revolting's done
And we'll have the Trunchbull bolting
We're revolting! (Matilda)

The minute you walked in the joint
I could tell you were a man of distinction
A real big spender.
Good lookin', so refined,
Wouldn't you like to know what's going on in my mind? (Sweet Charity)

Now I could swear that it's a fish
Though it resembles us in every way but size.
She gives it milk, and every night
She picks it up and pats and pets it when it cries.
I always knew she pitied fish,
But it's ridiculous to make them household pets.
She says it's not a fish
I say it is a fish
'Cause it surrounds itself with water almost every chance it gets. (The Apple Tree)

Kiss me too fiercely, hold me too tight.
I need help believing you're with me tonight.
My wildest dreamings could not foresee
Lying beside you, with you wanting me. (Wicked)

The willow that I used to climb
May bend a little more.
The paint may all be peeling off
The front porch and the door.
No matter what I'm heading back
And whistlin' as I go;
For better or for worse it's still
The only home I know. (Shenandoah)

Some day I'll land in the nuthouse
With all the nuts and the squirrels!
There I'll stay
Locked away
'Til the prohibition of LITTLE GIRLS! (Annie)

Speaking of "As Long As You're Mine" from Wicked, one night on Broadway Norbert Leo Butz couldn't play as Fiyero (I can't remember why) so Idina Menzel's own husband, Taye Diggs, subbed in... as you can see here.

For you to ponder.
I'll tell you a tale,
Oh, listen well.
A curious tale
It tells of a princess,
And it tells of her lover
And all that befell.

Is one of the criteria having had a revival?Or a touring company? Debuting on Broadway?

Close every door to me
Keep those I love from me.
Children of Israel
Are never alone.
For we know we shall find
Our own peace of mind
For we have been promised
A land of our own.

Something peculiar,
Something for everyone
A comedy tonight!
Something appealing,
Something appalling,
Something for everyone
A comedy tonight!
(A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum)

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
(Carousel)

Everyone's a little bit racist sometimes
Doesn't mean we go around committing hate crimes
Look around and you will find
No one's really colorblind
Maybe it's a fact we all should face
Everyone makes judgments based on race.

I do believe you've laid a curse on North America
A curse that we now here rehearse in Philadelphia
A second flood, a simple famine
Plagues of locusts everywhere
Or a cataclysmic earthquake
I'd accept with some despair
But, no, you sent us Congress.
Good God, sir, was that fair?

No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I'm here

Whistle down the wind,

Drown out all the rain,
Light a patch of darkness,
Treacherous and scary.

Whisper when you're sleepy.
I'll be there to hold you,

Kaylee, I have seen that before. I frickin' love that song all on its own merits, but it just makes me smile giddily when they sing it together.

Okay, so far, Annie Get Your Gun is the only one that meets all three criteria, and Chicago comes close to three.

Musicals that meet zero criteria:
R&H's Cinderella
Matilda
The Apple Tree

Musicals that meet one of the three criteria (likely not all the same criterion):
Oliver!
Tarzan
West Side Story
Calamity Jane
Sweet Charity
Shenandoah

And musicals that meet two criteria (though again, likely not the same ones throughout):
Chicago
Cats
Les Mis
Mary Poppins
Lion King
My Fair Lady
Starlight Express
Wicked
Annie

So no criterion involves having the name of the main character in the title of the musical, at least... Does any one of the criteria have to do with number of performances?

*poke* You missed my post above that one.

Looking at stats for Chicago, I see it initially ran for almost 1000 performances. Its revival has run for almost 7000 shows. So, is one criterion running for at least 1000 shows in the initial Broadway run? running for 8000? 10,000 shows overall including revivals?

*poke* You missed my post above that one. Apologies, answered below

Looking at stats for Chicago, I see it initially ran for almost 1000 performances. Its revival has run for almost 7000 shows. So, is one criterion running for at least 1000 shows YES in the initial Broadway run? running for 8000? 10,000 shows overall including revivals?

One criterion is now solved: the show must have at least 1,000 performances on Broadway. This includes revivals.

Is one of the criteria having had a revival? Or a touring company? Debuting on Broadway? No to all

Speaking of "As Long As You're Mine" from Wicked, one night on Broadway Norbert Leo Butz couldn't play as Fiyero (I can't remember why) so Idina Menzel's own husband, Taye Diggs, subbed in... as you can see here. I had not seen that before...

Kaylee, I have seen that before. I frickin' love that song all on its own merits, but it just makes me smile giddily when they sing it together. ...yeah, I had pretty much the same reaction.

I know that I must go and do
The things my God commands.
I realize now why he sent me here.
If you ask the Lord in faith,
He will always answer you.
Just believe in Him, and have no fear!
I believe that Satan has a hold of you

And I believe that in 1978 God changed his mind about black people!

Drink, l'chaim, to life!

Life has a way of confusing us
Blessing and bruising us.
Drink, l'chaim, to life!

Why does she run from me?

High in her tower she sits by the hour,
Maintaining her hair.
Blithe and becoming and frequently humming
A lighthearted air:

Agony!
Far more painful than *yours*,

Is one of the criteria having an entry in the Internet Broadway Database? some other database? No to both. Wikipedia, however, is relevant (HINT)

Ok, so wikipedia is relevant but having a wikipedia entry is *not* the criterion, right?

Could a musical that does not have a wikipedia entry still fulfill the wikipedia criterion?

Could a musical that does not have a wikipedia entry still fulfill the wikipedia criterion? Theoretically, yes.

Being made into a film?
Based on a book?
Based on a true story?
Certain number of actors relevant? Songs?
Main character is a woman?

Is one of the criteria about:
Being made into a film?
Based on a book? NO but close
Based on a true story? Close enough for me to call it.
Certain number of actors relevant? Songs?
Main character is a woman?
Main character is a man?
Potato?

No to rest, but we have a second criterion solved: The musical must NOT be based "on an existing story" - so this includes books, plays, religious stories, movies, myths, TV shows, comic books.... (It took me a while to figure out just how to word that to include what I meant but exclude what I meant. In any case, only one left.)

Ok, so we have
Criterion #1: "The show must have at least 1,000 performances on Broadway. This includes revivals."
Criterion #2: "The musical must NOT be based 'on an existing story'"
Criterion #3: 'The wikipedia criterion'
Right?

Is it relevant what comes up in the search bar when you type the name of the musical? Relevant whether there is a disambiguation page?

Wether the wiki page displays the musical's original poster? No.

HINT: The musical's Wikipedia page has nothing to do with it.

Nice work Balin. I sense you're somewhat sad that this is over.

I'm way overdue running one of these (inventor's block).

Nice one! I have to admit that I've never been to a musical, and I hadn't even heard of half of the musicals mentioned in this puzzle.
