I often have to give talks at professional meetings. In connection with this, I do something that I assumed almost everyone did. But when I mentioned to one of my colleagues, it struck him as so peculiar that he was surprised that anyone did it. My subsequent very unscientific survey suggested that we were both wrong; about 1/5 of the people I asked did it at least some of the time. What is it??

Is it something that you do before giving the talk? during the talk? afterwards?

Do you do it right before giving the talk? Or some time in advance?

Is it some kind of ritual?

Do you do it on the day of the talk? The day before? A few days before? Over a week before? Do you do it only when you have a particular talk planned, or do you do it even when you don't have a specific one coming up?

Does doing this thing help you to prepare for the talk? Is it connected to writing the speech? Rehearsing? Travelling to the venue of the talk? Props or aides used in the talk?

Side note, somewhat off-topic: When I went to Chicago a few years ago, I passed through Peculiar, Mo., and Normal, Il., which is close to Oblong, Il. I stopped in the first-named and had a Peculiar hamburger.
I also passed near Hot Coffee, Mo., but didn't go for a hot coffee. I wonder how residents of that town refer to themselves?

Anyway, does what you do involve, in any way, just sitting and thinking about your proposed presentation? (which is what I do in a similar situation. I call this 'putting it on the back burner to see what heats up')

HINT: What are some of the dire possibilities you might want to guard against if you have to engage in public speaking?

********** SPOILER ***********
When I have to give talks at professional meetings, one of my fears has been that I'll lose the paper. So I memorize the whole talk. Because I spent so much time preparing it, memorizing it is easy --as was this puzzle, alas. Please check out my new one!!

That technique could backfire. I heard a missionary to a Spanish-speaking country telling this on himself: He was not terribly confident in his newly-acquired language, so he memorized an all-purpose prayer.

He stood up to offer it, got out "Nuestro Senor," - and his mind went completely blank! He said he could do one of three things: 1) Admit defeat and switch back to English. 2) Go directly to "Amen," in which case it would probably be the shortest prayer ever, or 3) Take a deep breath and hope something would return to him. He chose option 3, and it worked, but came close to being the longest prayer on record.

But of course, if you are truly immersed in your subject, you will have the thoughts so firmly in mind that it won't matter if you use the exact words. Or have you adopted the belt-and-suspenders principle and use both notes and memory?

Before I forget - good puzzle!

Time for some weightless poetry:

Of all the kinds of lecturer,
The lecturer I most detest
Is she who finishes a page
And places it behind the rest.

I much prefer the lecturer
Who takes the pages as she finishes
And puts them on a mounting pile
As the initial pile diminishes.

But best of all the lecturer
Who gets her pages in confusion
And prematurely lets escape
The trumpet phrase "And in conclusion..."

Be wary of the lecturer
Who piles the pages done,
Then flips them all back over and
Continues from page one.
