Because of the upcoming City Council election, Nara changed the message on her front door, even though the message was not political & she had no interest in the election. How come?

Going for the obvious: Was the sign "No solicitors" or something like that?
Did the message consist of her name, which might be taken as a political message?

Because it was about time she got off her lazy butt and do something to that darn sign!

Did the sign contain letters?
Colors?
Animals?
Numbers?

When you Say changed the message, do you mean change what it's says?
Looks?
Remove it completely?
Paint it?

Was she planning ahead For the election? Or something the election would bring, like tourist or something?

Is it relevant to know what her sign said before she changed it? After?

When she changed her sign, was it supposed to have a negative or positive impact for herself, the election, and others?

Is it relevant to where the sign was located on the front of her house?

Is it relevant to who the sign was pointed to?

Is it relevant to what the sign said?

"her front door" - the front door of her private residence? or rather of her shop/restaurant/business?

Could the current sign have been misinterpreted as political?

Did the sign have instructions for one specific person? If so, the mailman?

Is Nara in any way affiliated with the City Council election?
Would this work for other elections as well?

Does Nara live in a house of her own? or in an apartment building?
Does she live alone? relevant?

Is there anything relevant about the city she lives in? Is it relevant where in the city she lives? Is there a polling station near her house?

By changing the sign, does she expect not to be disturbed?

Did she remove the contact information on the sign?

Did the sign specifically mention the doorbell? or did it say something else that someone could infer to mean that the doorbell would not work?

Did the sign state a reason WHY the doorbell was not working (i.e., the system had been disconnected)? or was it more to describe what should be done INSTEAD of using the doorbell? Did it suggest that a doorbell had never been installed in the first place?

So the changed message stated that the doorbell was out of order? but it also said something else? Did it make some sort of joke (for example, "The doorbell is out of order. The resident is out of her mind").

Does the location of her house matter? is she near a polling station? Was she worried that people might have thought that her house was where you went to cast your vote?

I see, I had the FA that the wording of the original sign was irrelevant--that the changed sign did something to keep people away.

So, was there a candidate in the election by the name of Bell? Did something else in the statement on the original sign seem to reference the election?

The actual city or the name of the city relevant? Was the name of the city on the original note?

Was the "undesirable effect" that she would receive more solicitors during the election? Or that the solicitors would target her specifically?

Did the original message direct people to another door?

so she changed the sign to read 'doorbell out of order'? because the first sign might have an undesirable effect?

the effect - to imply that she wanted a political campaigner to call? that she would be pleased if one called? to make a campaigner more likely to call? to make it harder to get one to leave? to make it appear that she was in sympathy with one particular party? to make it seem that she was interested in politics? to make it seem that she was not intending to vote? to make it seem that she needed help voting?

did the sign say the bell was broken? did it say 'don't use the bell'? 'the bell doesn't work'?

Was there another bell that visitors might think the "bell" in the message was referring to? If so, is it an actual, physical bell that can be rung? Is Bell the name of a person? Is there a political argument over another bell?

Did the original message read:
"Bell doesn't work"
"Bell out of order"
"Bell isn't working"
"Bell needs to be replaced"
"Don't use bell"
Or a variation of one of the above?

I'm not sure how to phrase this idea, but I'll try: would it be possible to misread the actual words on the sign? That is to say, rather than misunderstanding the meaning of 'bell' was it possible to misread it as, for example 'hell' or 'be 11'?

Were there two words in the message? Three? Four? Etc?
Was 'bell' the first word? Second, third, etc.?

"Broken bell" ?

You said that the original sign had already had an undesirable effect - correct? did she change it because of something that had happened? because of the response to it that someone had made? had someone warned her there might be a problem?

did the original sign reveal something about her? that she didn't want revealed? is the relevance of the election that people will come to her house? when normally no one does? does she want visitors? is she trying to avoid visitors? is she trying to hide?
has she done anything illegal? does the original sign seem to imply that she has done something bad? or might do?

was the original sign in poor English? did it reveal her nationality? was it incorrectly spelt? is she an illegal immigrant?

by changing the sign was she trying to appear more intelligent? more educated? younger? older?

bell kaput? This is a true story, & it was actually "Bell Defunct," but "Bell Kaput" would wiork just as well, so let's say it was that. bell bust? that probably would not work bell not functional? no bell unusable? that probably would not work. By the way, there's a HINT in my replies here.

Did the assumption have to do with the election at all?
Relevant who made the assumption? Every visitor? Campaigners?

Is "Bell" an organization? a place? a ballot measure or piece of legislation (for example, if there were a "Bell Act" being voted on)?

Gosh this is a toughie..

Did they think she was complaining about something and that 'Bell Defunct' was some sort of slogan?

Did the sign imply that Nara was a member of a particular group or organisation? Did it imply that she was foreign? Was there some ongoing local or world event that was relevant to this situation?

We might need a hint

The name of the person who lives there?

Did the combination of the name and the "Bell defunct" sign create an ambiguous sentence?

Did people think "Bell defunct" was her name? Did the sign cover her actual name?

This is close enough for me to post a

****** SPOILER ******

especially since I'm so eager to post a new puzzle. This is a true story from Edith Peralman, a writer who lives in Massachusetts. When her home doorbell stopped working, she put a sign next to it saying, "Bell Defunct." Then she got a letter beginning, "Dear Ms. Defunct: I am running for City Council, and I would like your support." So she replaced the sign with "Bell out of order."Now please check out the new puzzle I've been wanting to post, as well as my ongoing ones.

Nice puzzle!
Reminds me of an anecdote about a man who wrote a letter of complaint to a company based in Asia. The last sentence was something along the lines of "I am disappointed", and guess what - he got a letter from the company that started with "Dear Mr Disappointed..."
